You will need a pure sine wave petrol powered generator, otherwise you will blown the fuse of your flashes at every pop. They're very very expensive. Honda is the best choice.
For one 400 W flash you need at least 1,5kW gasoline generator. For two 400's go with a 3kW.
If you want to go with batteries, you must buy a 12V car battery but you will need a pure sine wave inverter too. Really expensive solution.
I am not understanding your post.. I have used the Vagabond II with up to 3 strobes (300RX fro Elinchrom) without any issues. I have never blown a fuse so I think you r comment is completely wrong.
I suggest you to buy the powerpack in the USA as I did.
Dollar is convenient and a cheap ticket (for a three days trip) is about 300 euros. Sleeping in a motel and eating at mcdonal's is the solution if you don't want to pay item+shipping+VAT on item plus shipping+import tax.
Ask friends and relatives if they need something from abroad, so you can collect some money for the airplane ticket.
I did this way and saved 900 euro on a Bowens powerpack. :D
Hey Tom (I suppose), sorry for the delay of my answer.
1) A pure sine wave inverter (or generator) is a kind of inverter for "complex" electrical appliances. They're ok for personal computers, studio flashes and stuff like that.
Standard inverters/generatos are ok for rough appliances like halogen lights, TV, electrical owens...
2)Alien Bees are for America market so they're 110V - 60Hz. We use 220V-50Hz in Europe, so the Vagabond won't feed your Dlite.
noisy, big, heavy and they produce smoke. You need a 2,5-3kW generator just to feed 2 Dlite 400's. You must consider the peak of energy absorption when they're recharging the flash bulb. One of my Bowens 500 blown a fuse of a 1500W inverter, and the modeling light was off!
Best solutions:
-rent the battery pack
-switch to good and affordable brands like FalconEye or Dynaphos
i also own a d-lite4 and the very thought of getting the vagabond II to supply the power excited me!
i'm waiting for paul c buff to bring the 7mm shaft for the PLM diffuser by january 2010. that way, d-lites can use the umbrella for maximum light efficinecy
Im confused? What is this.

@altamashurooj I don't think it will work, since the Vagabond is 110V

do you know if it will work with my photoflex starflash 300? i've been wanting one cus my lighting is just sitting at home. studio is no fun.

Will it also work with BXRI500 heads or should I go with innovatronix explorer xt se?
ardaguldogan 1 year ago
I correct myself. After digging further you can run 4x X1600`s or 2x X1600 plus 2x B1600 at the same time.
1x X1600 and 1x B1600 run together would give you 287 full power flashes at 3.4 secs recycle

No surge protector whatsoever...

Just to confirm, are these the D-Lite 4's with fans? What kind of surge protector are you using to plug in the lights? Thanks!

I am trying to buy the Vagabond II. But they don´t delivery to Brazil. How many lights can you plug on it? It´s is reliable?

How long is the expected battery charge on the vagabond?
murderous333 2 years ago
Depends.. From a full depleted battery it takes about 4 hour, but more normally is about 2 hours when the battery still has charge.

hey there, i am in need of a battery pack/generator for my dlite 400's for a location shot i am doing around christmas.
however, i live in the UK, so getting one of these vagabond II's is very difficult (especially due to time restrictions).
as an alternative i was going to buy a petrol powered generator, like what is used for caravanning.
do you have any experience with these? ie what kind of power i would need?
thanks for the video.

hey, thanks very much for all the helpful information.
i am by no means an expert with generators, and don't understand what a pure sine wave generator is.
i had a look at honda eu10i,20i & 30i...are these the generators you mean, or is it a different one?
i would actually only need to rent 1 for a couple of days, as i have a friend who can lend me their lighting for the other location shoots.
but pretty cool that you got to go to america and end up saving money!

@rtphotography I was talking about inverters and gasoline generators. Power packs like Vagabond are pretty different.

This is the new Vagabond. It was said that the DLites would not work properly with it being Multivoltage but I am happy to report they work great!
I haven't done a test to see how many pops can I get out. I've used it twice outdoors for about 300 pops and was fine...
