  • Very beautiful and appropriate for the reflective period of advent before the busy christmas tide.

  • Probably the greatest tune ever written by anybody, ever!

  • Unbelieveable music! Bach is the greatest musician/composer of all time in my opinion

  • This music always brings tears to my eyes. So beautiful! I don't believe in the christian God, but listening to this chorale I wish I did; then I could say: "Lord, praised be thy name, please reward with your love your servant J. S. Bach, who with his music made the rest of us proud to be human and grateful to be alive". Sadly, at this time, belief in God seems to be just a childish wish.

  • @CHANOCDOGEN God could be using this to strike a resonant chord within you! Keep seeking God with all of your heart and you will find Him!

  • @CHANOCDOGEN haha the same. I'm atheist but Sleepers Awake makes me want to be christian. the beauty is beyond what one person should be able to create... But Bach was the greatest musical genius of all time.

  • Yes,I too am happy to be reckoned as the broken one.

Rather,I was a broken person yesterday;but I am made whole today,Glory be to Him in the highest.

I firmly believe that there is more to the world than that can be perceived by the senses.

The transcendent reality with its purpose speaks to us through the way,the life and the truth of Christ.

  • @zerubabel123

    save it...

  • the melody in the beginning is, without a doubt, the most beautiful thing i have ever heard.

  • I first performed this wonderful chorale as a ten year old chorister. It never fails to thrill.

  • I`m sitting in the library right now and although I`ve been learning for about two weeks I never felt that relaxed. This music gives me so much power and calms me down so that I just laugh about my upcoming exams :)

  • who is the conductor?

  • i can listen to this all day long

  • @aleerv89 and year after year....

  • Baroque period Cantata

  • One of my favorites pieces of music by J.S. Bach. Merci beaucoup! (de Montréal, Québec)

  • Esta musica realmente me hace sentir que toco un pedacito de cielo

This music really makes me feel like a bit of heaven´s touch

  • I fall in love over and over with this piece, very soothing & calm.

  • so gorgeous. i luvv bach's music

bach and handel have got the be the best composers in the baroque era!

  • Don't forget vivaldi D:

  • vivaldi is pretty good too

but his repertoire is not as exclusive as handel and bach's too

his music is lovely tho.. esp autumn from the four seasons

  • Maybe not, but if you love the violin, Vivaldi is the way to go xD

  • hahah i will agree wit u on that :)

i am a pianist and bach and handel were keyboardists so i tend to be inclined that way.

  • if you can post more please do. God really has a mastery of beauty. Praise His name. Especially when His gifts are used in the right way for His glory

  • @TheCuppycakedelight5 The world truly becomes a brighter place if you take god out of the picture. Try it! (I did)

  • @my235 with respect to you i won't i know that life without God is life without morals, life without hope, God loves you , he knows your heart and your problems are always in front of him. He never forgets anyone no matter how bad things are. And He always keeps his promises.

  • @TheCuppycakedelight5 But are you not heavily burdened by the constant thought of what A god thinks of your actions. What makes Religion to me, seem so clouded and quite frankly unbelievable, is the hundreds of gods there have been throughout the centuries. This simple fact, to me signifies that if there is a god and he wants us to do his bidding, there has to be something a lot more tangible. We humans have evolved over thousands of years to know ourselves what is right and wrong.

  • @my235 with respect i don't believe so. There is a God and archaeology attests to evidence of biblical events exactly as they occurred, observational science also proves that nothing can macro evolve , but i will agree with small adaptations known of course as micro evolution.

  • @TheCuppycakedelight5 Get over it, love. Sky fairies are OK for mall children. Adults should be mature enough to see the world for what it is. There's no need for any metaphysical crutch

  • @Limpandtotheleft you say christianity is a crutch ,for broken people? , okay because i am a broken person, everyone is with respect

  • @Limpandtotheleft Honestly, can we listen to this without having to listen to bullshit dogma, people believe in The biblical God, but think Zeus and Odin are silly,???

  • @kaleo183rd This song, Zion Hears the Watchman, is literally taken from the Bible, about the second coming of Christ, written by a professional church musician who was known for writing reams of religious music, like this particular piece, and you are surprised that people are discussing religious themes? Only listen to secular music if you don't like hearing about religion.

  • @Limpandtotheleft I am sad for you, a grown ass man who argues with people on the computer.

  • @TheCuppycakedelight5

    You save it too...

  • @TransAmFormulaV8 excuse me what have I done to upset you?

  • amazing

  • beautiful

  • most beautiful harmonization on earth.

  • Sweet!

  • Such a pity Bach and Handel never met or heared eachothers work.

  • yes, just like Tolstoi and Dostoievski

  • Oh, they heard eachother's work, and were well familiar of eachother. Bach had the greatest admiration for Händel, but unfortunately it seems the feeling was not mutual. And given Händel's bluntness, perhaps Bach was better off not meeting him. His son C. P. E. did meet Händel, however, and tried to arrange a meeting between J.S.B. and G.F.H., but Händel made excuses. Bach, on the other hand, would have dropped everything if given a similar opportunity.

  • Bach frequently expressed his admiration for Händel, and is supposed to have said, "he is the only man I want to see before I die, and the only man I would like to be, were I not Bach."

There is no record of Händel commenting on Bach, however, though it is impossible that he had NOT heard of him as in the German region they were from he did have a good deal of fame, and there was a common desire at the time to have the two "compete", as it were.

  • Unfortunately, Händel's complete lack of musical borrowing from Bach, as well as the complete lack of his commenting on Bach in the source material, seems to indicate that Händel did not have the slightest interest in Bach. They were two completely different personalities, and I do not see how anything productive could have come out of a meeting between the two. Which is really sad. Personally I hold Bach to be the greater composer of the two.

  • Thank you for the information.

Really did not know this. Read an article in the ''Frankfurter Allgemeine'' a very long time ago about this subject , but only remembered that it stated these two composers did never meet.

Personally l think they are both great composers in their own right.

Love Bachs profoundness as well as Handels flamboyance.

  • Gilmaris. Yes, we shouldn't really compare but Bach is of course the greater

    composer.

  • @Gilmaris Did Handel even know any of Bach's compositions?

  • Handel never mentioned Vivaldi either....even though it was obvious by some of his works that he knew him.

  • yah

  • Zion HOERT die WAECHTER singen...

  • is this not Wachet Auf Ruft uns die stimme?????

  • it is!!

  • That's the first movement of Cantata 140. This is the fourth movement.

  • Pronunceceashion: zsion hort dee vekcher zingin. doss hurtz toot ee-hee-vour froyden shpi-i-i-i-ing, Zee vacett oond shta-ate island off. (First Section) I did this song for a Christmas Performance.

  • actually not really. With the english singers, you cant hear some of the german. Trust me, I used to live in Germany
  • Im not talking about the spelling. I had a german coach teach me this song

  • Absolutely Lovely...

  • Bach es simplemente grande.

  • Incredible!
