  • he was on a parr with Billy Joel but never achieved the same level of mainstream success.

  • going to New York in 16 days! First time in the states too. I think this is going on my playlist

  • This was recorded by Hill's Angels in the Benny Hill Show not long after the song came out.

  • Excellent track that deserved to do better in the charts than it did. New York, New York all the scandal and the vice, I love it!

  • @FabFM. Well at that time RCA had Odyssey, Bowie and many others. Gerard Kenny WAS a priority for them at that time.I know because I was there.

  • @martley1 My father ran a record shop in Croydon and had contact with RCA reps. His friend also owned a record shop in Balham. They knew many people in the business. Not once did they have an RCA rep try and hype Gerard Kenny into the charts! If Kenny was a priority for them he would have got higher than #42, records were hyped into the charts in those days but into the top 20, or top 10 not to #42!

  • @FabFM. I'm sorry but this single WAS hyped into the UK charts. That doesn't mean it's a bad record in itself. In fact I like it.

  • @martley1 If RCA hyped this record into the charts I think they would have had the power to hype it beyond #42!! RCA didn't care much for Kenny, or many of their other acts, as they were too busy milking Presley's backcatalogue for all it was worth!

  • I used to think Billy Joel sang this song, it sounds so much like his style

  • i shall shit on bin ladens beard!

  • Could have been an all-time classic song, but why-oh why- the choral bits at the end of the verse ?????

  • I know it's a bit cheesy, but I don't think the choral bits detract really.

  • Think we'll agree to disagree on that one Ronan...!

  • @Greenthigh Kenny wrote this in the '70s, so he wasn't thinking with a 2010/2011 mind... thank God!! And it is an all-time classic song as far as i'm concerned, you'll find nothing of this quality in the charts this week!

  • @FabFM don't judge me! I am from the late Sixties and early Secebnties era and despise a lot of the chart stuff these days. I just tghink the choral bit ruins the song. I do now and I did then.

  • @Greenthigh Who juding you? I'm dissagreeing with you!

  • @FabFM Fairous commentous. By the way, I had this album and loved it, but you can't get a copy of it on CD in this country, only import.

  • @Greenthigh I haven't heard all of Kenny's work, but what I have heard is excellent. "New York New York" was the first song of his I knew because my local station played it throughout the 80s.

  • Photo clarity sucks, try again

  • Great stuff! I don't have a great deal of creativity with contributing on behalf of ITV, BBC and Channel 4 but, I must say I enjoyed your video. If you want a truthful technical analysis then the only thing I can really fault are two minor points:

    1) Youre use of the speed zoom effect was too repetitious.

    2) You're cut ins were, on a few events, a little out of sync.

These are critical points, AKA known as a positive contribution to a sterling effort.

  • 4* for content, 1* for photo clarity.

  • I dont think he's in a contest mate

  • pms...lol

  • PMS DOIT

  • I DOIT on a daily Basis mate.

    Doitchampions is my Bruv

  • apparently he wrote the music for the "Minder" theme tune. what a talented guy!!!!

  • I never knew that! Now you mention it the piano does have a Minder does have a feel to it!

  • I now Love this song. :)!

Thank you for uploading it! Complete random YouTube search led me to this FANTASTIC song!

    Thanks

  • love the song, love NYC. a Gyro is a Greek dish, usually with lamb and sauce, sometimes with pita i think.

  • IT sounds like a kebab then.... but "i was eating a Donner kebab walking down 6th avenue" would just not be right

  • Love the man and his songs, specially this, must be played as loud as poss

  • its all greek to me

  • yeah what is a giro sandwich. I forgot all about this song- takes me way back.

pictures are a bit blurred though

  • i assume he means gyros, which is a greek dish

  • whats a giro sandwich?

  • Remember Gerard Kenny - a great talent still..

  • Wasn't this the song that RCA hyped into the UK Top 40 back in 78, after it lying dead on the shelves for weeks?! Then after getting it into the charts the sales collapsed!! Oh well, it was still a good song.

  • @martley1 Not true... it was in the charts for 2 months and reached a high of #42. It wasn't hyped because it is still remembered over 30 years later with minimal airplay or exposure. I wasn't even born by the time this fell off the charts, yet I've loved this song my whole life. Indeed my local radio station was playing it well after it was a hit!

  • One of my favourite songs! Txs for putting it up :)

  • this came out back in nov 1978,a classic me old dear used to play this in the renault we had back then great days great tune gerard kenny a true legend

  • I havn't herd this song 4 a wile, thanks 4 uploadin this song, good vid 2.
