I think a lot of times producers/recording engineers just like to have the click track in there for themselves to hear, just to make sure everything is tight and stays in perfect time. I don't think it's always for the drummer's benefit. It seems to be more of a tool for the recordings guys than the band/artist.

If anyone else was confused Butch means he had Dave record Luthium to a click track not Endless Nameless. He did this bc the band kept messing up the timing on Lithium resulting in Kurt going nuts.
