@towncop You are right about david writing this song for his Dad that passed away. He said that to the audience in the concert he played in Tasmania,Australia 1999. I was priviledge to have got the chance to even see him in rehearsal prior to the concert. He earlier came to the foodcourt I worked, with his wife and had some soup and he was only about 100meters away from where I was working. The concert was absolutely brilliaaant. Another loving and touching song this one is! Good stuff dave.

He is so adorable in this performance! The music of the 70s is so superior to the MTV garbage that was popular when I was a teen. While all my friends were listening to Michael Jackson and Duran Duran, I was listening to REAL music like Bread and Gordon Lightfoot! Most of my generation and kids today just don't know what they're missing!
As a young man in 1972 I had the privilege of listening to songs like this masterpiece.. and falling in love for the first time with ones emotions racing to fine heart-rending poetry like this David Gates wonder , makes me wish that the kids today will resurrect the beautiful music of the 60s and 70s and love it the way we did- though we didn't know at the time how fleeting that period was to be. Great music is something that lasts forever and songs like this are nothing less than that.

David Gates was (and is) a wonderful musician and song-writer. The music of this era still speaks to us today. There is a sweetness in this music that is missing in what is being played today. I read somewhere that he wrote this song for his father.

@RMCKIE Do yourself a favour. If you haven't already done so, and collected all of the 'Bread' albums, at least get one of the many 'Greatest Hits' albums available. So many beautiful songs and every word can be understood. I think it's a real shame some younger people have never even heard of them. Maybe the 'Bandslam' film will wake them up!
