I'm 22 and I have to say though this song is not from my generation, it is one of the most beautiful songs i have ever heard. I grew up with this type of music. Thanks mom and dad for allowing me to listen to your types of music from a baby to young adult hood.
The legend, Maggie Smith, won her first Oscar (Best Actress) for the movie The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. She is the "Jean" of the song. She would win her second Oscar (Supporting Actress) for 1978's California Suite where she played opposite Michael Caine..
WOW WHAT A BEAUTIFUL SONG BY OLIVER,SO SAD AND SO BEAUTIFUL. I LOVED THIS SONG SINCE THE DAY I WAS BORN, NOBODY CAN SING THIS MELODY LIKE OLIVER. MEMORIES THIS SONG BRINGS TO ME, IT ALSO BRINGS TEARS TO MY EYES SO PEACEFULL.THIS SONG I WOULD LIKE THEM TO PLAY AT MY FUNERAL. R. I. P. OLIVER.LONG LIVE YOUR MUSIC.
when my grandmother died her name was Jean. so at her funeral we played this song. but that was a year ago. every time i hear this song it touches me heart in so many ways. I love you Grandma <3 Rest in Peace
William Swifford became Oliver and recorded this perfect heartbreater in 1969. It's been covered forever since, but no-one came close to the tender beauty of this classic reading, with the tinge of anguish in the chorus. Lost too young to cancer, this man was a superb singer.
Wow, what a beautiful song. The lyrics are as lovely as poetry. "...run, if you will, to the top of the hill... open your eyes bonnie Jean..." Thanks for a lovely post.
This is one of those songs that when I was younger I loved, but never admitted to it. Now, much older, it doesn't matter!! And Oliver's version was the only one I knew, and it is great. However, he misinterpreted two lines in the song - listen to Rod McKuen's version and you'll hear them right away. 1) Til the sheep in valley come home, I'LL WAIT (not "come home my way"). 2) While the hills are ablaze, with the MORN'S (i.e. morning) yellow haze (not "moon's yellow haze). Still, great!
this song actually is kind of my style i like it. very relaxing and pretty. the guy has a good voice. lol 60, 000 views holy cow that is really good lol and you should make a video with yourself in it
Last night November 16 the title of this song just popped into my head for no apparent reason. This song does have a special meaning to me but I don't get the connection yet. I'm glad I rediscovered it. Thank for posting.
don't know why but i found this old tune in my head suddenly a few days ago....and i haven't heard it at least 30 years! thanks for the original version**rjmendera**dortmund
this is just a beautiful song.. Rod McKuen was a great talent. and Oliver did a great version..
My mothers name was Jeanne.. my dad and her were married in 1941.. 16/19 WWII was going .. on . they had known each other since they were 9 and 12.. when this song came out .. they were in their 40s.. my father used to sing it to her .. Jeanne Jeanne
very romantic
second verse.. was " you're old and you're mean.." .. used to crack us up.
Can't imagine anyone singing this song better than Oliver.....Such beautiful words, he has such a lovely voice....The song sounds timeless...Thanx for the post.
luxaurum @jdbaes I agree! Hate music and the radio nowadays...up til the 80's I guess you could hear anything on the radio...No one would produce, let alone play a song like this now...sad....but who cares!? I love it...give me this anyday xxx
How is it that a song can bring tears to my eyes? I guess it's because it's a Beautiful and powerful song called Jean and nobody sings it like Oliver, and it also reminds me of such sweet memories of being a child. I would think about sheep in a valley and how roses are red. They were much simpler times back then. One of my favorite songs ever, and I added it as a favorite. Thanks and God Bless!
Had Good Morning Starshine on MGM 45 label, but never got this, and then couldn't find it for years. Thank God it's here- I LOVE this song! Words by poet Rod McKuen I believe....
I finally figured out why she called bonnie Jean after seeing the Prime of Miss Jean Brodie two days ago. I mean I was 5 when this song was a hit so I never saw the movie before.
am looking for this video and dvd can anyone help me so I can by both please its my favarate song and I also would lijke thats what friends are for by dion warwick thanks............
@jrpgagnonjr If "Jean" by Oliver is your favorite song, then you chose a great song for your favorite! This song stops me in my tracks, and I just want to sing along and enjoy whenever I hear it. Thanks Rod. You wrote a beautiful song. We all love you Oliver, and we miss you!
My Mom always told me she named me after a song. called me today to tell me to play it, never did I like my name but after listing to the song I will always cherish it, Bonnie Jean...
'Tis me Mum's birthday, today, Dec. 27She would have been 78 had she stayed on Earth, but alas, she left us tragically back in 1981 at a young 49...she was our bonnie Jeanne indeed...we are who we are (her 8 kids) today due to her awesome goodness, love & beauty...missing you Mum, every day...Know you & your Kenny- boy are having a fine romp & great craic reunited in Heaven...luv, your jillybean
One thing I notice about his singing is that he goes slightly sharp on notes to express stronger emotion, and I think he does that in a really subtle but effective way.
I had the most wonderful time with an amazing girl called Jean. I have loved loving her and being loved by her. Not having her in my life instantly kills my heart. Only God knows how much I miss her.
I remember working alone one night, while playing the radio this song came on and I heard the words for the first time. Ultra romantic that I am I just began crying. Is there love like this in the world today? Or has our selfish pettiness swept it all away.. Come into my arms.. Bonnie Jean..
This song is an excellent one for me, I have been recently reunited with a friend who have not seen in 15 years. Such a beautiful song for a beautiful woman....
This song is like going to Heaven, and seeing the One True Love that you forgot you knew. Pure and Pleasant Joy. It makes me think I should be nicer to the wonderful woman I married. We will be apart someday. Love with another, never lasts forever. Nothing does. I love you, my Wife. Thank you LonghairsRcool for helping me remember what is truly important.
What a great memory. I played this 45, along with his 'Good Morning Starshine' over and over. I wondered what had happened to him (see Wikipedia). Very sad he only lived to the age of 55. Interesting how his brother took a completely different path, and is well-know in his own right.
I haven't heard this song since I was a little girl, my mom usto sing this song to me, brings bac nice memories..ya my name is Jean one of the last names no one uses anymore..Jean/Jene
You know, I never thought of that but you may be right. My mum is called Joan, but has always been known as Jean since that faraway day (in the 1930s) one of the teachers at the orphanage said she looked more like a Jean than a Joan...I work in a busy city centre library and register lots of people but in the 11 years I have been there I don't think I have come across one Jean. I love this song, it is played over the closing credits of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, a truly excellent film...
The melody is played over the opening and closing credits of the movie but never with vocal. I watched the whole movie again recently expecting to hear it somewhere but Youtube is the only place you will hear it. Absolutely beautiful. A hush would come over the room or the car every time this was played on the radio when I was a kid, and ofent a tear would be shed by some sentimental grown-up.
@jdbaes What is really amazing about that time is the variety of music that got radio airplay back then...songs like this or the Carpenters could hit the top along with loud acts like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, the Beatles...could you just imagine this song being released today? Radio would never play it; all they play today is nihilistic garbage or hip hop crap...it would be laughed right out of existence...

@luxaurum -- Your right. Top 40 radio was so varied and wide-open in that era that you could hear Johnny Cash, Steppenwolf, Henry Mancini, The Rolling Stones, Dusty Springfield, The Supremes, Tommy James & The Shondells, 3 Dog Night, The Archies, Roy Clark, The Beatles, The Guess Who, Tom Jones, The 5th Dimension, Blood Sweat & Tears, Iron Butterfly, The Turtles, Bobby Vinton, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Sly & The Family Stone, The Cowsills, Marvin Gaye & so many others on one station.

@penny539 "Jean" is the theme for the 1969 film The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. Another singer,
not Oliver, sang the song in the film. Oliver's version isn't really the original, it is the version that charted.

Jean, Jean, roses are red
All the leaves have gone green
And the clouds are so low
You can touch them, and so
Come out to the meadow, Jean
Jean, Jean, you're young and alive
Come out of your half-dreamed dream
And run, if you will, to the top of the hill
Open your arms, bonnie Jean

Today would have been my Mom's 90th Birthday.
Her name Jeanette, but she was affectionly called just "Jean" by all of those that were close to her and loved her.
She was my loving Mom but she was also a Lady that to just know her would be to love her....
So today this is for her with warm memories of her love always...Her Son, Bob
