I was yo when I saw that movie. I've cried like a baby... and Ryuichi Sakamoto's music is still haunting me... Every time i hear it, tears are coming up to my eyes...
Than you've probably never listened to David Sylvian? Never heard of the band Japan or his last project: Nine Horses? Damn bro...you're missing out! David Bowie is a great artist but David Sylvian is just as big, might even be a bit bigger in some ways!
I was 16 in 1985 ,at the time my musical taste were Hendrix & Zappa -now Bach & Coltrane. But not important, take a ride on the composer's solo piano version here on Utube...just for curiosity.
@2merciful Yeah me too...I can't help but wonder why Bowie and Sakamoto did not collaborate on the music - it would have been a rage since they were playing the romantic pair in the film and both were renowned musicians!
Bowie's film video footage is not even on this music video! Contract policies or something? Can't help but wonder :)
i was born in the 90's and the music during that time was ok. but the 80's era was amazing. im 18 now and im beginning to like 80's music. this song is brilliant
I think he is trying to say that David Bowie influenced Early 80s imagery, art e.t.c... in the form of David Sylvian e.t.c.... being influenced. Though I feel that David Sylvian is very much an individual in his style of music.
He is then saying Madonna influenced the next generation in the mid 80s....
Sometimes I wonder what the early 80's music scene would have been without the creation of Ziggy Stardust and Bowie. His influence seemed to be tantamount to any other entertainer from the 1970's. It stretched far and wide. Changing many early 80's stars lives and influencing a whole generation. Then came Madonna a girl from the Mid West that came to New York to be a dancer. Her influence on young women entertainers did just the same.
Can't help but wonder where Bowie is in this video.. did he not want his video footage to be featured in another musician's video?

Looks and sounds like Bowie.
Never understood why they didn't go with the real thing.
Great song though.

Does anyone remember the original UK single version which is a nice synthpop track - as opposed to this 'acoustic' version?
Mind you, I haven't heard it for over 20 years so maybe I am mistaken. There was a synthpop band in the 90s named after this song...
