Not sure this will sell the idea to people who don't already believe it. The 'Yes to AV' campaign failed so miserably because of that oversight. Not sure what would though...
really? then why does this book use chimp studies to justify its findings? psychology and sociology are not sciences, they prove nothing. man is not a piece of clay. science proves that consistently. box him up, tell him he is the same as the others, he will break free and defy your utopian ideals.
it means an animal that has evolved to exist in packs with power struggles. like wolves, chimps and dolphins. you can change the environment all you like. it wont change the beast.
"better society" thats subjective. Hierarchical organisation of society is too. Wheter its better to be equal can't be proven, the only reason we aspire toward it is the hangover from judeo-christian values that the world still suffers from. All the most creative and industrious civilizations of history have been un equal.

if in-equality is the cause fo the problems then why do the rich suffer from mental illness so much? absolute nonsense. verging on communist propaganda
@ThomasRowsell The whole focus of the book is to show that inequality is bad for everyone and affects both the rich and the poor. You could maybe consider reading the book and then you would see that it has nothing to do with communism or propaganda.
if every one who was suspicious of the motivations of the authors bought the book, then you would make a lot of money. nothing in the book can disprove one fact that is true. people are not equal. there is no god to say we should treat eachother as equals, and as hierarchical beasts we strive to rise above others.
@ThomasRowsell if you are suspicious of their motivations it comes from a lack of knowledge about their intentions and their research. Wouldn't it be better to be coming from an informed position? If you read it you would see it is not suggesting we can ever reach total equality but if we were able to reduce the gap it would significantly reduce most of society's problems...wouldn't that be something worth striving for, regardless of your desire or need to rise above others?
I guess it must be that some countries have people that work thousands of times harder than others and other countries where everyone works the same? Seriously, get a grip, inequality is not because "some people work harder than others".
By that reasoning I guess hundreds of millions of Chinese are in poverty because their "not working hard enough".
@BritishSnail THERE IS NO GOD AND IF THERE WAS, THERE IS STIL NO EVIDENCE OF EQUALITY. equality is a hangover of christian dogma that is perpetuated by communist sympathisers.
@ThomasRowsell It amazes me, the preoccupation with God that people who ridiculously claim His universe does not exist have with Him. And lovely of you to take such an interest in the provision of Christ's loving mercy in this world. God bless you.
@ThomasRowsell: I wonder if you live in the USA, where terror of communism seems to be a widespread after effect of the cold war - the dreaded 'commies' being held up as bogeymen to justify rejecting out of hand any debate on the prevalent doctrine of 'selfish capitalism'. This US-conceived economic system has dramatically increased inequality over the last 25 years, culminating in the recent world financial crisis. If you think that's exaggeration, you should read "Fault Lines" by Ragu Rajan.
@TheWreford I agree. Britain is a mixed economy and having the NHS doesn't make it a socialist nation. In fact it is an NHS in name only as waiting lists are so long people often end up going private for operations, getting private dental treatment or seeing a private physiotherapist, osteopath or chiropractor when they have chronic back pain. It's not like it was in the 1960's and 1970's where anybody who bought drugs over the counter in pharmacists was laughed at.
@ThomasRowsell ..and in case you are wondering, Ragu Rajan is not some sort of dodgy commie lefty - he is Distinguished Service Professor of Finance at the Booth School of Business at the University of Chicago, and the former Chief Economist to the IMF
@ThomasRowsell Funny that Denmark untill 2003 actualy proved this scientific fact! Since 2003 we been going down hill with everything as we have a right wing (idiot) gvt fucking it all up making us go back to the 30's.
@ThomasRowsell The rich suffer from mental illnesses so much because of the psychosocial pressures that are in our system. If you are born in a rich and powerful family, the pressure to being that successful, if not, more successful is very stressful. That is why many upper income teens and adults do drugs. They are susceptible to the pressures of our socioeconomic system.
Yes, "spirit level" everyone down to equal poverty. A very convenient idea for bankers and governments. How about freeing people from the debt slavery of the present monetary system controlled by private bankers. This would be a better way to reduce poverty and improve well being.
The Spirit Level looked as if was permanently parked on my Amazon wish list, currently 90 items long (mostly books and some cds and dvds), but this video made me move the book into the basket and proceed to checkout. I was not disappointed: it's a very good read and the evidence it gives is so strong I get annoyed it is not taken more seriously - in a recent Newsnight discussion Kate Pickett and her message were largely ignored by Kirsty Wark.
Are you dense? The issue isn't equal outcome, you nitwit... it's equal access, equal rights, equal everything *but* equal outcome. Try learning economics sometime; nearly all of the underlying tenets of efficient free enterprise is based on the aforementioned equalities.
Unless you think that having to compete on a level playing field is somehow communism. In which case you're probably just a lazy-ass who refuses to compete and wants life handed to him/her/it on a platter.
