For those still wondering if the new wave of algae growers is onto something, consider this. Algae are the microscopic precursors to plants that bloomed and died countless times millions of years ago when the P, N and other nutrients they require became massively available due to erosion and other causes. When the nutrients suddenly shut off, the algae starved, and practically all of them died nearly at once. Then they fell to the bottom and were covered with sediment, eventually becoming oil.
Before someone posts a comment about Solazyme using a genetically engineered heterotrophic algae that feeds on sugarcane juice in the dark, I know about that. That is why they have partnered with a Brazilian agribusiness firm to produce a plant down there to grow algae indoors.
For those of you who keep asking for what this is used, algae produce lipids, which can easily be transesterified into absolutely clean-burning biodiesel with no SOx, NOx or other pollutants. See YouTube videos on biodiesel for the biodiesel chemistry. Also take a look at a company called SolaZyme, which just had a large IPO in May or June of this year. They have delivered multiple shipments of jet fuel to the U.S. military that satisfied all the technical specs.
(((((((((((((((((((('GasHole' Every American Citizen Needs to see this documentary , full documentary is now available on youtube revealing oil companies conspiring against the 100mile per gallon car... the disappearance of Tom Vogel inventor of the vapour engine...also controlling oil markets to maximise profits
Really interesting stuff. I heard about this, but I didn't think it would be possible to do it as a homegrown project. Cant wait to see how you turn that into fuel. If everyone did this, the amount of CO2 scrubbed from the environment will seriously dent all the emissions being produced.
Hey, can you explain the whats whys, and hows of this whole system, I mean I see how it works, and I assume you are providing sunlight, and warth throught the panel, but to what end?
@GREENPOWERSCIENCE - Hey Dan thats interesting, Thanks. Here. in central Iowa we also get winters with -30f air temp and -50 Wind chill makes ya appreciate Spring and Summer...LOL, for year round production I would build a 6'x8' green house as listed then buy a second one for the panels to construct the Algae producers. Thanks Again
Hey Dan - The hurricane polycarbonate sheets you are talking about seem to be available in the southern states at Lowe's. I am checking with the local Lowe's here in Des Moines Iowa to see if inter store transfer can be done. FYI for everyone these are the ClearView Hurricane Polycarbonate Panels they come in 2 sizes 4'x6' SKU# 258569 $88 and 4'x8' SKU# 258571 $118. Hope this helps good luck to all.
If a check valve, also refered to as a foot valve, were placed at the bottom of your suction line when the panel gets blocked by clouds the foot valve prevents the water from draining the pump and would not require repriming.
Living here in Iowa, you know where..."Corn is King", algae is actually more productive. What I have read you can harvest algae about once a week with corn it is once a year and corn is subject to weather conditions during planting, and harvesting. The other nice thing is that you can make several products with your algae harvest i.e., diesel, ethonol, soap, cattle feed, and fertilizer. Once you get your system up and going you can be very busy and also make some income.
So it's simply for making algae? Why not just lay a molded pond full of fresh water and drop some leaves in it, and leave it in the sun for 3 days? I mean, if my friend's pool isn't chlorinated and it rains heavy, or he doesn't keep the leaves and organic matter out, it becomes super algaefied in a week. Once I pumped it out into a dead field, and within 2 days that field had a huge patch of the brightest grass I've ever seen. It's amazing what algae can do for a yard...
Watch out for the plastic you are using. It does not like hot water. It might get a bit hot as the water darkens a bit.
While a little less transparent a material that would work better for in constant contact with water would be coroplast. Similar structure but better to be constantly in water. Also if you can find coroplast locally it should cost alot less money. Probably less than 1/2 the cost of polycarbonate.
Also this looks almost like a solar hot water collector.
You have to put your algaes in the dark sometimes for they store oil. There is also a need to provide concentrated CO2 to increase the rate of production. Because algae strains with lower lipid content may grow as much as 30 times faster than those with high lipid content, you have to search the bests algaes.
Because certain types of algae produce high amounts of lipids(fats ie hydrocarbons) once it is pressed out come oil which can be fractionally distilled into diesel or gasoline
Ok, thats obviously great, but how are you going to collect the algae and turn that into fuel? I guess you are trying for biodiesel, but I suppose that a dried solid fuel would be equally possible (wood pellets from clumped algae?)
@AnobisBloodwing Hard drive cooling pump for gamers. The pump is $35 but I am checking a source for cheaper pumps. The advantage of this pump is 140 f.
@GREENPOWERSCIENCE I've just made a garden irrigation system, I used a 12v windscreen washer pump from a volvo £4 on ebay , seems to have a bit of punch
Wait... so it moves water through that UV resistant material.... That's cool. But why? Are you somehow harvesting energy though the algae? I guess I gotta wait till the next video.
It's good to see you've been experimenting more, Dan. I was worried for a while that we weren't going to see anything but mirror arrays for a year.
I'm really intrigued by this new thing you've got going on. Can't wait to see what it does.
I am a big fan. Keep up the great work. As someone who has made biofuels I will say that this system is impractical other then it will show that you can grow algae. I have never heard of anyone successfully making fuel from algae on a home/small scale. The hardest part about algae fuel is extracting the oil. If you want to give making algae biofuel a try I say go for it just don't expect to be running any vehicles on algae fuel anytime soon.
So will there be a future video showing how you make the fuel from the algae and some sort of list of numbers to show how much algae is produced per hour?
@mrsparex I dont think they have neighbors anymore. After a few mirror accidents, he burned down the neighboring houses & cleared the land for more experiments. :oP
@norxcontacts When algae culture is starved on nitrogen part of fertilizer they start to produce oils instead of cellulose and sugars. Oil can be extracted using cold or warm press. More oil can be extracted using butane.
Great steps, questions, 1.) are you using pond algae or algae for making oil. 2) why don't you use gravity feed, move the water that feeds the bottom tank above the plates and have it feed down ( If I understand your setup ) I have seen another you tuber who is growing algae for fish and he is using window screen to grow algae. Just lets the water flow down from the top over the screen and the algae forms, then he harvests it for his fish, might work for you as well.
Amazing!

@guicapone2 inside the algae, you can strain the algae out of the water with a filter then use a press to extract the oil.

@AccidentalLyrics
You just summed up, very succinctly, the EXACT reply that would quite possibly work for 99.99% of the Green Power Science videos.
If Dan isn't a High School Science teacher, he should be. At the very least, his videos create a spark in the mind into the realm of "possibilities."
For instance, the recent composting video showing how it can be used to heat water, is juvenile when one is even remotely familiar with Jean Pain.
