Richards has the attributes of a center back, but he doesn't have the height...that's the only issue.

One thing I've known from watching matches is that at higher levels, strength and muscling people off the ball becomes a lot more important.

However I was wondering, what is legal in "strength" or "muscling a player out"? E.g. if you're running with the ball and you just randomly shove the guy out of the way that's obviously a foul. I'm not really sure on shoulder barges. What's legal and what's not, when it comes to strength? Cheers.

I'll answer this question for you mate.

As long as you have the ball you are able to shield it with your body you cannot raise your hands and use any sort of force because that would be pushing and that would count as a foul.

If there is a loose ball say me and you run towards the ball if i build on my upper body and arm strength i could barge you out of my way but you need to be to the side of me in order for me to do that legally if i barge you from behind that's a foul.

If so would you say that in professional football where a lot of tactics are possession orientated, would you say that strength is a crucial factor in the game, to be successful in 50-50 tackles / loose balls?
