Sure it does- it allows for a slightly more realistic interaction with guests on news shows, etc. Not NECESSARY, no, but it is an improvement, if only for show.

The only real "cool factor" in this effect is that it is done in real time. Considering the amount of data to be processed and bandwidth latency, I'd say its decent at best. For delays in the 0.5-1sec range in satellite transmissions, its ok. When you do it inside two studios next to each other, connected over fiber, you can do more stuff, because there are not bandwidth and render restrictions, so you can achieve more realism, like less artifacts, some shadows, reflections, virtual floor, etc.
They create a virtual cube inside the studio, and then match the coordinates with the ones of the Bluescreen studio. The motion control software moves the cameras to do the matchmoving and keep the perspective. nothing really fancy. Hollywood does this for years. In fact CNN's is CRAPPY. Many TV virtual studio setups do it better without artifacts, and almost 10 years ago. Believe it or not, you can do the same with a fast computer, a hi-res cam, proper lights and the software. Poor execution.

It's true. This is NOT a real hologram. A real hologram actually uses optic fibers to suspend light in the air. What they did was just a camera trick done by the movies many many many times before. CNN even explains it that way.
1. if it is a hologram, there should be a reflection on the shiny floor. if there are no reflections, therefore, the other news caster is not seeing anything in front of him.
2. if it is a hologram, her holographic image should not move when camera moves. notice her feet is not stuck in place in the red spot when the camera pans.

It's not really a hologram, but it's also more than greenscreen. The main new tech is computers that are able to determine the correct perspective of the "background-shooting" cameras, and then combine the many images from the "hologram-shooting" video cameras in the right way to make it look like a hologram.
However, the interviewer was probably looking at a screen. We're not quite up to actual holograms yet ;) . Soon, maybe.

People are so stupid. It's not a freaking hologram. There is absolutely nothing special about it at all. No new technology or anything. They don't see anything in the studio. It's only on the screen that she can be seen, and it's no more spectactular than when the weatherman is using bluescreen for the weathermaps. You see it done constantly in movies too. NOTHING NEW, NOTHING SPECIAL!

Not really a hologram, but an advanced Chroma Key setup. Expensive gimmickery at best. The whole idea of having someone on location is to SEE that location. Yellin may as well have been in the studio. Pointless, and will go away with the "Matrix freeze and rotate" effect. Nice work, however useless it may be for news reporting.

It's true. This is NOT a real hologram. A real hologram actually uses optic fibers to suspend light in the air. What they did was just a camera trick done by the movies many many many times before. CNN even explains it that way.

1. if it is a hologram, there should be a reflection on the shiny floor. if there are no reflections, therefore, the other news caster is not seeing anything in front of him.
2. if it is a hologram, her holographic image should not move when camera moves. notice her feet is not stuck in place in the red spot when the camera pans.
THIS IS CLEARLY MISLEADING. this is why you shouldn't watch too much television.

It's not really a hologram, but it's also more than greenscreen. The main new tech is computers that are able to determine the correct perspective of the "background-shooting" cameras, and then combine the many images from the "hologram-shooting" video cameras in the right way to make it look like a hologram.
However, the interviewer was probably looking at a screen. We're not quite up to actual holograms yet ;) . Soon, maybe.

Check out the video "cnn hologram tv first hoax exposed on discovery channel" - its not actually hologram technology. It's superimposed with green screen technology. I'm sure the speaker was looking at a screen to see her anyway.
