UGHHH. No. It's like... I mean... Placido used as an AID BAND!?!?!?! GOD IN HEAVEN that is an INSULT!!! Even the change is obvious!!!!!! This made me angry beyond limits.
I don't think there's anything with laughing about it. It's happened to me in performance before and I laughed then, as did everyone else on stage! It's not a bitchy thing, it just sounds amusing. It's true, it can happen to anyone and it happens to the Domingos of this world so I'm certainly not ashamed when it happens to me!
Afro Poli do not mind the idiots who accept cracking as normal. It is not. In Paris, in the older time, the audience in Paris who have booed him after that crack instead of applauding him like cretins they are. In Marseille in the older time, he would have been pelted with vegetables. If he was sick, he should not have sung. Heppner as Tristan was also a monster cracker as Tristan. Boo Heppner.
And for the record, Placido has cracked EXACTLY at the same spot in a performance at the met that was being televised live. I was there. I saw it. They also fixed that one when they released the DVD. Do I think less of that AMAZING singer and musician? NO!!!
It is asinine to think that opera singers don't crack. Everybody does, and you students and frustrated voice teachers who think you can criticize any of the people who are onstage of the great opera houses in the world today as idiots. If you think they suck, just imagine what they would think if they heard you!!!!
I don't think it's fair to laugh at a singer's cracking a high note. It happens to good singers, it's no big deal, anyone can have an accident caused by a phlegm. I think it's infantile to be laughing or even posting a youtube link on a profesional singer's accident. Deep down it conceals some kind of envy for opera singers, so you're looking for the mistake that makes that person flawed.
@VivaRenata Anyone can catch a 'frog' in their throat no matter how good the technique. Those who have never cracked on stage have just been lucky enough to have only cracked in practice - so far. The vocal cords are lubricated by a thin layer of mucus along the vibrating edges. Sometimes if a singer is fractionally dehydrated, the mucus forms a fleck of jelly which momentarily prevents the cords phonating. No amount of technique can prevent it or disguise it when it happens.
They did the same with Jon Vickers in Norma from Orange, the last few notes of the cabaletta was cut and Domingo inserted. Ironic really as Domingo had problems in Norma himself.
You can hear someone gasping right when Heppner starts forcing his note. I too felt pain for him, he must have damaged his vocal chords, screaming like this. Impressive.
Very ironic since the exact same thing happened when Domingo cracked that exact same note during a Live from the Met performance. When it was re-aired on PBS 4-5 days later, they'd subbed in a palatable note to replace the terrible crack.
How ignorant must this people of france musique be, even if someone doesn't recognize Domingo -although Domingo has a very recognizable voice- you can clearly hear that this can't be Heppner singing. What a bunch of idiots!

@AfroPoli You also did not answer my question: At what age was this replacement note of Domingo sung?

To be honest yes he does crack initially but regains the note. It can happen to the best of them

Hahaha... oh wow. Burn. I just played this on my little piano app on my phone - it's only a B flat. Domingo had those (usually).

You know, their voices are kinda similar. It was a nice try. But Heppner WISHES he sounded that good on the high notes, LOLZ

@VivaRenata He was dead even on the way to the high note, before he even changed vowels! LOL But good analysis.
