I did encounter same kind of situation in campaign mode once, through bug thought. I was left standing with over 1500 troops having my opponents single general Camel Raider Cataprapht(?) unit annihilate my whole army without losing anybody.

I'd give a lot to know the mechanics of horse charge. Overall it feels complex equation.
