"Oh the hoot owl she hollered and turtle dove moaned, I'm a poor boy in trouble a long way from home.....................very pretty lyric......too pretty to be left out......
You missed a verse. I'm pretty sure it goes And a way of yonder a head of them came a prancin and a dancin my noble stewball. i bet on grey mare i bet on the bay but if had bet on old stewball i'd be a free man today. And a howler she hollered from circle of folks came a poor boy in trouble and a long way from home.
@Marieantonia1990 you know I new there was something missing. As soon as I read your note I heard "and the hoot owl she hollered and the turtle dove moaned, im a poor boy in trouble and Im a long way from home. :-) The old stuff I do from memory from singing to the kids when they were little. I guess I left a bit out. I really should try to be more careful but I just kinda do whatever. So I looked up the lyircs and redid it properly. So kind of you to tell me.
made up tabs. Actually my fingers just play it.truly. Maybe you can find some in a book.i dont have any.check out tabs on the web.sorry i couldnt help.
well just had a listen to this... i cant remember if i been here beofre for sure or not.......but was thinking of Max... and mising him.. our ole stewballmax... where did he go.. i guess none of us know! but if he listens to this hopefully he will know i was thinking of him as i listened to this! wonderfull and beautifully done!
LOL... yeah it took me forever to figure that out!.. sorry bout that.. and yes i dont know where Max is.. dont know what happened to him, wish i did! he is sucha sweetheart and i know he loved this song so much! hoepfully he reads these and comes back someday! we miss you Max- whereever u are!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So very kind.much appreciated. I just need to destrress from the day.Relize I do ths for the spontaneity of the music and feeling. I like the anonimity cuz its about the music not me. Never expected such kind comments. Icing on the cake as I have saaid before. :-)
so kind.I am most fond of the basic folk stuff and harmony. Its the kind of stuff that the kids whne they were younger liked to be sung to sleep with. :-) thanks again.
Your sweet and sensitive rendering of this beloved folk song clasic was Heaven-sent . Your angelic vocalizations and stripped-down acoustic guitar strumming was inspired and a perfect marriage of musical bliss. A very tender and heart-felt showcase that is going directly into my favorites. As you might tell from my screen name....I am an admirer of this chestnut to begin with.
I guess this is from the horses mouth so to speak. :-)
I just do this for fun but am flattered by your so thoughtful comment.
ps .All I know of Stewball is the PPM folk version. If you have stewball reference and you feel like it send it.I could google it but would rather hear from the horse.
The very first Peter Paul and Mary song I heard on the radio was "Stewball" when I was 10 years old in '63. 45 years and 67 PP&M concerts later,I never fail to be transported back to my childhood whenever I hear Peter Yarrow play the opening chords to this gem ("Puff" does have the identical affect)...but because it is what had introduced me to my love of the trio,"Stewball" has great significance, hence my screen name.:)
I know what you mean. I grew up on PPM. Used to think the guy in the apartment directly above ours was playing the songs over and over at nite.We had the records too and I pay them all day. Come to find out he moved and there was no one in the apartment above. I was playing the music im my head. I am lucky to have a decent ear.Maybe I should try a ppm tune. I only do things when the song just comes out if you know what I mean.thanks a gain Stewball.
What a voice! That was fantastic...
