Benati is a great singer and was TOTALLY miscast. Louise must NOT sing well. The entire book contradicted her casting. If Louise is talented, why did Rose ignore her gifts? This would make Rose a meanspirited or dumb character. There is a reason that the four previous Louises and the two that were filmed did not sing the role well.
@pudgeuncle I think it works if Louise can sing better because then she can sing bad the entire show, however when her confidence is boosted as "Gypsy Rose Lee" she sounds a lot better, because sh ebelieves in herself.
Also, the song "Little Lamb" is more of a wish to herself, so it would help if there was a gem of singing talent in her voice.
@OohcoolProductions You are rewriting the show. Pay attention to Louise's final dialog before Rose's Turn. There is a very distinct reason as to why all four previous Louises and the two filmed ones did NOT sing well.
@pudgeuncle Louise wasn't seen as very graceful either but she ended up dancing/stripping as a career. How come you don't take issue with that? Regardless, you have to remember that within the story they're not actually singing here. This is simply a scene transformed into song because that's what musicals do. From what I recall, Louise sings not so well in the actual performances.
I thought Leigh Ann was the most amazing June I ever saw. So different from others..very cold..until this song, where she and Louise connect...it turns this song from a comedy song to an emotional one

i have to do this song in my acting school and im playing june. I love it and this is a fantastic recording. It helps me practice while i read MLIA lol.
I knew that Laura Benanti was a brava soprano before walking into the theater for Gypsy but when i heard her sing this and then the strip i was blown away! I never realized what an amahzing beltress she is . And Leigh Ann Larkin was PHENOMENAL especially since it was her broadway debut. Only hiccup on the recording is at like 2:07 on the word "Wouldnt". crazy crack? i dont even know what it is
I absolutely love Laura Benanti! You should listen to her performance of "Unusual Way" from NINE, it's fantastic. She's right up in the ranks of people like Patti LuPone and Chita Rivera. I have no doubts she'll become just as legendary.
LOVE their voices, and I LOVE their vibrato, but I think that the vibrato (especially on the last note) makes them seem a lot older than the characters are supposed to be.
C. sing with healthy technique ??? Too much for me! *overloads*
Okay, and for anyone discussing technique here, the vibrato they use is not too fast. It could be a little slower, but it could be Julia Murney fast (her voice is full of tension). These two girls have very little tension in their voices. Hopefully, they won't sing Wicked or Phantom or some other musical that will ruin their great instruments.
I've said so too but when I look back to all the Louises & all the Junes they always sing with punched vibrattos. Perhaps it is written to be sung like that. Have you seen them live? They are GREAT!!! :-) Benanti surprised me!
I saw "GYPSY" this past Wednesday night, at the St James Theatre!!! What a superb production this is!!! An evening I will never forget; the entire cast is so talented, and work very well together... WONDERFULLY done :)
that is not a crucial point to the show. its crucial that when they perform in vaudville louise is untalented. they are not performing in vaudville at this point, this is the 2 sisters talking and it happened to be put to song. the actress has to be able to carry a tune, she sings all the time. the character has to suck as vaudville. i saw this production of gypsy many times and laura benanti is brilliant in this role. its a perfect fit for her.
well in real life louse was 15 when she became a stripper but in the musical june seems much older so i think thats right for the play. Although i might be wrong because if louse was older thatd make june like 12 and thats awfully young to run off with an act boy...
Lauren Benanti doesnt come out, shes big with germs, or at least thats what she told the camp I went to, where she spoke at. But Leigh Ann Larkin came out really quickly, although it was hard to tell her apart from all 'the hollywood blondes'
Leigh Ann Larkin on that C# is ridiculous! She's amazing. I was fortunate enough to meet her and she was the sweetest girl! I complimented her on her high belt and she was all like "aw thanks, it really means a lot!" haha
i am ridiculously excited for this recording!!!!!!!!!!! these two are sheer brilliance together. their slides on "moooOOOOOOma!" are amazing! gah! i love them!
I saw Gypsy Saturday night on Broadway and it was absolutely amazing. Leigh Ann Larkin is very impressive; she has great stage presence and an amazing voice. Laura Benanti was great as well; I loved her at the end. She did a great job, and these two together in this song were just grand.
The producers is actually really good. very good book. You seem to think that anything that is meant to be fun is bad. And Gregory MAguire didnt seem to mind what they did with Wicked so im pretty sure you need not defend classic fantasy literature. And with that last comment i end my part in the Wicked disscussion!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Wicked is a crap musical. I'm sorry I was reminded of the producers when I saw it. They took my favorite book and turned it into a farce. The producers song "Keep it gay" played in my head the entire time I sat through wicked. Hell once the wizard started singing in the second act I wanted to get up and leave.
WOW!! If I knew someone had that attitude during the show, I would have told you to leave!!! Just because you don't like it doesn't mean you get to call it crap!!!
Ah, I disagree. I'm almost 19 and I fell in love with the BOOK when I was sixteen. I only recently saw the musical, though I've had the music about two or three years now. I think that the storyline is flat if you just observe it on paper, but the acting behind it is 90% of the time what blows me away. I still cry sometimes when I listen to Defying Gravity. I'm more blown away by the music, and the play does the novel no justice, but I still like it.
Wicked may be lame material wise but people like it and it's well known so from someone who doesnt know classic theater well a reccomendation for wicked is great
yeah and its good cuz once they get into it they start getting into other shows and knowing more than just like hairspray and wicked and legally blonde, thats how i got a gypsy obsession i was watching a blooper reel of ugly betty cuz i wanted to watch kristin and than Patti LuPone came up so i went hmm, let me search her up,and now im like totally obsessed cuz patti is ahmahzing
