the x series takes place in the 22nd century. Wily was in his late 60's-70's by megaman 8 so he likely died of old age same w/dr light but the classic mm, roll, protoman, and bass i have no idea. The events after classic and up to the X are still unknown for the most part (some details are given out).
the first megaman died and dr. wright/light created X to be his final and ultimate creation but died half way through and before he died he set a machine to finish the job
X awoke and found a message from dr.W/L and then X made an HQ out of his lab for Mavrick Hunters,Mavricks are bad robots in other words, X and sigma were good guys for a time then sigma got his butt kicked by Zero and was never the same again, because after the encounter with Zero he slowly went Mavrick and then created the sigma virus, witch can turn reploids into mavricks, reploids are the good robots or just citizens.
