@Greystone4653 I've been teaching since I was high school; tutoring my friends. My grandfather was a teacher, his father was a teacher. I guess the ability to explain things runs in the family. hahaha. Thank you for your support.
sir, you are one great phonologist .. i have been searching online for a long time to hear cantonese phrases spoken by a man whom i could mimic. this is the method i too use in teaching languages .. thank you for your excellent video lesson.
hi..im waiting for your next video..your the best teacher, unlike the other, they put cantonese lesson video without english translation all useless..who will be interested in cantonese lesson???,of course the foriegner,,not the person who already understand cantonese, mean the local person...come to think of it???but you..you explain every little thing, more power,,your the best!!!
I just watched the mispronunciations video and now this one. Specifically I noticed this with "7 - tsat - 七 " but -- I'm thinking there MUST be a reason romanization systems used "ch" like "chat". I feel like if I literally pronounce tsat as if it were English, that any American could transcribe it to "tsat". So I'm guessing it has too much "t" in it if I pronounce it that way>> could I be right? I feel like you pronounce 'tsat' to sound as much like 'ch' as possible w/o rounding lips at all.(?)
@parasitius ch is just easier to read because we are familiar with the sound it makes even though it's only an approximation of ts. I'm guessing they tell all learners that 'ch' is pronounced 'ts' but to speed up reading, they use 'ch' instead.
and yes, 'ts' has too much 't' sound in it if we are talking about the english 'ts' sound.
Note 'ts' is also an approximation so 'ch' is an approximation of an approximation. The best to learn the sound is by listening to native speakers/audio clip.
@tkviper Woah thanks for replying so quick! And thanks for the lessons :) Yeah when you say the 'ts' sound, it definitely sounds very much like 'ch' to me. So I think I can do the best I can (without a native speaker by my side to help) by saying "ts" with my lips not round but trying to make that "ts" sound as much like "ch" as possible (as in sounding as much like you as possible). Hope I'm not thattttt farrrr off!! =)
I speak Mandarin, will I be able to speak Cantonese (more or less correctly and understandably) with Mandarin grammar? Or is Cantonese really different in that respect?
@YouStoleMyTube Spoken Cantonese grammar is different so you'd sound very strange using Mandarin grammar like you're a book because Mandarin is more conventional and should I say formal. But you will however have an advantage over many other learners since we use the writing system and there are grammar similarities. Good luck.
the silent t thing is the same as in australia, we dont say the t ending most words properly, like in the word "that" many people say "tha (then the t position)"
true true. even in America, people do that all the time. It just helps connect words together. It's not called a silent T, it's more like a swallowed T. Like "take Matt to the game', we swallow the k in take and the t in Matt. Thanks for the comment.
I am willing to push myself but your lesson seems pretty simple so i write it down on a book so i remember but i am very happy to learn from you can't wait to start on the next lesson
This is an absolute beginner's program. But don't worry, the speed will pick up quickly once we've gone over the basics. This is how babies learn. Small stuff first. Then once the foundation is there, learning becomes natural. There are 4 lessons online now.. I will make more soon.
As a Hong Kong "Zai", it is quite interesting for me to watch someone teaching Cantonese. But I believe you made this very systematic and simple! Good Job!!!
im mandarin chinese but english is my first language. i find canto pronounciation easier since most of the sounds are closer to english

Just what I wanted.
Nuanced & detailed, yet simple for a plodder like me.
Thanks! Will check out your other projects as soon as time allows.
PS: What started as a desire to pronounce my son's Kung Fu moves correctly, has developed into a fascination with the language itself.

I will definitely start you off.
