Obviously, you have no clue what publicity and public relations can do for a musician. Johnson was a lousy guitar player and singer. You only remember him because he claimed those things. There are many of his contemporaries that were way, WAY better and faded into obscurity because they never made any outrageous claims.
It goes on and on, even to this day.
There's no such thing as bad publicity for a musician. It's all lies. I know about it.

Take KISS, or Marilyn Manson as extra examples. THEY SUCK, but everybody and their brother has heard of them because of their 'satanic' antics.
Luckily, only religious wackos such as yourself take such crap literally. The rest of us only listen to the music and see through the mumbo jumbo.

johnson was very open about having made "a pact with the devil" at the crossroads...a friend of keith richards played a recording of johnson playing guitar and keith is supposed to have said: this guy's brilliant but who's that playing accompaniment with him?...er...it's just johnson on his own keith, lol..Led Zep are THE musical apotheosis & both page & plant are serious magicians; no doubting the devil rocks/ got all the best tunes, lol; that's why he's often represented as a brilliant fiddler
