Oh dear, David's going to be called on the carpet by Stephen Fry again.  According to QI canon, the earwig is so named because its pincers resemble a tool which used to be used to pierce ears.

@ELuhn Well, Lucy did say it was named because people THOUGHT they crawled into ears, rather than that actually being true. I think they'll get away with that one ;)
