Herman was always on his game everytime I saw him perform. Be it with Jimmy Smith, Kenny Burrrell or leading his own combo. Besides being an execellent saxophonist, he was a super nice person. Thank you for posting this video.
herman riley, G-d bless him. a wonderful musician. i saw him with kenny burrell and in other places in los angeles. he was also a very nice person and gave strong encouragement to younger musicians. he asked me once if i was working, when i shrugged, he said "you got a right to the tree of life!".
Yes, Herman was a great player. I spoke with him on the phone during the last months, and he sounded great, had plans for the future, but -----. Glad to have known him
Oh, Long Beach, I used to live on San Fraqncisco Ave until 1984. How's it going in Long Beach these days. Do they still play jazz at - is it Hermose Beach or Redondo Beach, can't remember which? Lighthouse was it?
Herman Riley is the the best saxophone player I've had the pleasure to work with and also a dear, dear friend. He is so lyrical on this tune. His phrasing is beautiful. The whole group is just great. Llew Mathews on piano , John Gianelli on bass, and Roy McCurdy on Drums. They are all excellent. I will put this in my favorites to watch and listen again and again....Sandy Graham

This song is awesome and I'm surprised there isn't over a million hits to it. It's a hidden jewel I guess.

yes, great Herman but I was very touched by the Llew Mettheus's piano solo (and playing anyway...) simple and tasty, I didn't know him before.

Thanks for posting this, Herman Riley was so great. You can see him on my channel performing with the great Jimmy Smith circa 1988.
