I believe you dealt with only torture of other humans here, but behind the scenes torture of innocent animals in "research" labs, meat farms, and so on, that's the undercurrent no one wants to admit to, the big pink elephant in the room everyone pretends not to see. We don't have natural empathy, period, it's not just interspecies. We have lost our moral compass out of lack of a natural instinct. Nature is not survival of the fittest. It's two dynamics, a negative, fear based one, and a positive love based one. Humanity has fallen into fear, forgetting love. Empathy=Love.
