Don't you even fucking dare make that comparison. Don't you even dare. How many CIVILIANS died in Sherman's march? VERY few if any in factual accounts. Now. . How many died in Hiroshima alone? 90,000 to 160,000 people died. The Entire city was destroyed. Atlanta? At best 30% of it was actually burnt. Sherman's march attacked anything of military value and infrastructure. It was a precisely calculated advance that cut through the south. Hiroshima? Reckless destruction.

Hey, first off, let's note that I'm glad the Union won, and I'm a big Lincoln fan.

I agree with you on that and I know that the South caused Bleeding Kansas.

Although, I'll have to disagree with blaming the South for the torching of Atlanta in the March to the Sea. Sherman's Chuck Norris policy of "Total War" was clear that nothing should remain standing. Crops burnt, buildings gone, railroads uprooted. Sherman was merciless in his March, and HE, not the South, burnt Atlanta.

Actually, Sherman was only one of a number of people responsible for the burning of Atlanta which, actually, only claimed up to 30% of the city. Which, while serious, is not as great as many would have us believe.

His nothing left standing policy was aimed specifically at Georgia and south Carolina which he blamed for the entire secessionist movement. His approach in North Carolina was significantly more restrained on the grounds that they voted for secession by a narrow margin.

Necessary? Absolutely. As long as Lee fought, the South strongly believed it could win and was willing to put up a fight in spite of its obvious handicaps.

The March had several very significant consequences. It showed the South that they were extremely vulnerable. That they couldn't stop the North from doing as they pleased. that the war was hopeless. This stirred fears and concern and discontent within the confederate ranks and desertion increased. It's all to weaken resolve, fighting spirit, and the ability to fight.

I have Sherman on my Top 10 list of US generals throughout history. He probably shortened the war by at least six months and showed Southerners that the Confederate government was illegitimate, ineffective, and unable to defend them. Where did you find this? I have seen very old copies of the song and have not come across these lyrics. They seem out of place. The future tense of this verse doesn't fit with the past tense of the rest of the song, much less the last line. 'Chasing women' would not have been acceptable for any publisher to print in this era, either (couldn't be performed in mixed society, ergo loss of sales). I hope you'll forgive some skepticism as to its authenticity.

While my uncle was civil war reenacting he happened to overhear the group a few tents over singing this and the whole camp cracked up. Just thought it was rather clever and thought i'd share it =).
