There is nothing really special about Steinway pianos. They are really over-rated. They do sound really good, but they are way overpriced for what they are.
@leonelgaleppi As far as I can tell, it's actually a loop from Garageband! Don't know if Garageband are using it for their loop library, or if this video is using their loop!
If not: Gould is the best interpreter of Bach at the piano and Richter is like the best interpret of whatever he played :D Long story short: extremely good (godly) pianists
@JohnThePetru oh god. sooo im considered a dumbass because i don't know 1 interpret of bach, whom i dislike. and yes, i have heard of richter as i said in my last commet. don't lol on me and get your facts straight. only the preferation matters here. i prefer steinway over yamaha. played on both. for me yamaha is shit, steinway is godly. same for interprets or what ever. head many. some were shit for me, tomsic, rubenstein and some others are gods for me. now stop bitching.
@dsmithforsheypiano Bull. Yamaha acquired Bösendorfer, who have been making pianos since 1828 and easily match Steinway models. Cheaper Yamahas may be not as good, but their top range is very good. Steinway are 'one' good piano maker, there are more.
some years ago, the programs at the ravinia here in highland , il used to contain a notation that, "yamaha was the official piano of ravinia." curious thing is that i never saw any artist play one; all played on a steinway.
I have a wonderfully restored Steinway Model L 1929 that will be arriving at our aprtment in Jersey City from CA in a few days. If you are a serious buyer we can negotiate a very good price. The only "non-Steinway" part is the Renner action, which is a superb peice of craftsmanship used on many US and German made Steinways. It's sings like a charm, and the action is miraculous. Why? We need the room an will be buying a STeinway vertical.
@pkarlton I would be intrested in your offer. I aldready have a Yamaha SU 118 but I'm thinking to give it to my grandson as a birthday present. So, can you send its photos and videos (to check the sound). Also send your best price. If I get serious about buying it, I will make a trip to Jersey City.
Hamburg Steinway made pianos are great, NewYork made is junk...there are lot of quality problems...German made Steinway is more precise.
Mason & Hamlin is the best American made piano.
All piano has an own sound character, Blüthner, Bechstein, Bösendorfer, Steingraeber, Fazioli, Yamaha handmade new CFX is wonderfull....
There are many cool instruments and brands.... Steinway is an universal sound piano to plays any kind of music...... but if you need better clarity :-) this is not your piano.
NY Steinways are not junk. They are all different. The NY Steinway makes their action specifically for the piano unlike the Hamburg which uses a renner action like Bechstein and Boesendorfer. As far as clarity, you can voice a piano to be mellow or bright. It is an individual preference. I love Mason and Hamlin but I sold mine to acquire a Steinway.
While it can't be argued that Steinways are the supreme brand of piano, they have a light touch and sound that can't be rivaled by any other brand (maybe Petrov but I haven't played on one to know) for someone who is learning to become a great pianist, I feel that Kawai would be a better choice because their keys have more resistance and build strength so that when you do you get on a Steinway it feels beautiful.
When he named Horowitz, Rubinstein and Gould, the commentator had no idea who they were, and proceeded to saying "If you want to be a real piano player you need to get a Steinway." I play a Bosendorfor, does that mean Im not a real piano player? Richter once said " I do not care much for a piano. It is the fingers that truly create the music. I do not go through all the tests for finding the "perfect" instrument. That is the piano tuners business, and i trust him for that"
Yamahas are reliable, and extremely well built, with the highest quality control imaginable. If something goes wrong, it's usually an easy (and most importantly, cheap) , repair. In general, they sound great.
Steinways are well-built, but the lack of quality control can result in an expensive nightmare if something goes wrong. They do, however, produce arguably the best possible sound from a piano.
the quality issue has to do with American steinways, right? (vs. the hamburg, which is mysteriously unavailable in the states. wtf? NY steinway co. too scared Hamburg instruments will outsell?)
@homerboy488 relax. Consider the source-he's wearing a cotton polo and jeans to interview a Steinway and Sons representative. He's simply endorsing what he's just interviewed.
@homerboy488 I agree. When I bought my old upright for £600 (I have since gotten a Technics Digital Piano) the man wanted £5000 (yes, five thousand pounds) for a second hand restored upright. For that you could have two nice holidays. For some people, the piano would be better, but just giving a comparison in what you could buy with the money.
What people are missing here is the piano's action.
Yamaha's sound great if you want a piano with lots of colour, Steinways have a rounder sound. That is a matter of taste. Yamahas importantly have a very easy, light action (excluding the clavinovas which feel too heavy and sluggish).
The (patented) Steinway action is what makes it the best piano in the world. It is not by listening to it but by playing it that you know this. It feels wonderful to play and responds to your every whim.
I have always let my ears do the deciding and Steinway and Schimmel have always been the top two for me. I also like Baldwin, Mason and Hamlin, and Bosendorfer. All we have are opinions. If you go to Hamamatsu (spell?) Japan two where Kawai is manufactured, the same workers build the Boston piano for Steinway in the same factory and the workers have gone on record saying that the craftsmanship and materials are higher and more stringent on the Boston make than on the Kawai....
If I ever won Powerball or Mega Millions, one of the first things I would do is purchase a Steinway & Sons concert grand. I know the cost is extraordinary, but with the kind of money why NOT buy one?
YOU may have not heard of Vladimir Horowitz, Arthur Rubinstein and Glenn Gould (it is apparent you don't listen to much classical music), but your lack of knowledge in some of the greatest virtuoso pianists in the world does not warrant you to tag them as "artists that MOST PEOPLE DON'T EVEN KNOW".
It's funny how there's always some half-wit who comments on pretty much 'every' Steinway video that the Yamaha is better. To actually be stupid enough to publicly compare the two shows their education and intelligence level. Yamaha copied Steinway's design so closely the instrument itself is a patent infringement. It is difficult to have any respect for a company who's claim to success is a product that was copied from another. Steinway should sue them. lol. :)
i want one!!!!!!!!!!!! can anyone pleae donate one to me???? lolz....i dont care if im being laughed at for saying this but i desperately want one!!!!
It is kind of irritating when they say they don't pay people to endorse their pianos because Horowitz for example was given EXTRA special treatment and Steinway absorbed huge costs to move his piano and in fact the family gave him a piano as a wedding gift. They also have been notorious for treating artists badly who for whatever reason played on something other than a Steinway - Rubenstein is a good example. It is just a slight stretch of the truth in their implications...
it may be alot of money, but you are getting the best quality which means alot... its like a good gibson guitar- you pay alot but its worth it in the end
