Its pretty incredibly that Anathema could do this, proper doom, as well as the genuinely heavy doomdeath of Serenades, the Pink Floyd-esque era, their later Radiohead style, develop a unique and wonderful chilled-out, emotional rock style and now be releasing orchestral melodies. My hat comes off to those boys.
I listened to this so much when it was released I actually think its imprinted in my dna. Every other 14 year old got to go to discos and all that shit that year but I got to go to an anathema gig.
I like both old and new Anathema. My favorite album is Eternity. But this is the very first album I owned by them, and this song is just brilliant. It's so ridiculously simple to play - and yet, who else would think of it?
knowing both anathema phases, i have to say i like the death/doom metal phase the best, and althought ive listened to good songs from the later phase, im sorry that they changed their music style so much... i wanted to hear more heavy/melancholic music from them...
thanx for remembering old times! most of all anathema's early songs have some specific atmosphere that flows far beyond limits of standard doom-metal genre. They are unique musicians who generated most beautiful, deep and psychedelic sound I ever heard. They are my favorites for all times, even that I don't use to listen for hard stuff any more. Great respect!
why can't new bands capture the drama of the old school wave of doom/death metal. Look at Opeth and Katatonia... their new sound has no existential mal de vivre vibe to it compared to the old stuff. so sad. just look at this song...
I think Anathema are never "selling themselves out" - they are true seekers for something called truth. They walk their way an speak their words and play their music. They do not care if the people love it or hate it, they just do it, and what could be more true?!
brilliant song. serenades, then this, then the crestfallen ep. man I used to love this band. I was 18 when this was released...the drugs must've made me experience it all the more lol
They have no label and they're still making music. They make music for themselves, and I like what they do. It's good, it has the same brilliant atmosphere, rife with emotion and feeling. I feel sorry if you can't appreciate how a band can change.
I don't believe that they have become capitalistic/money grubbing either; however, I would agree with the sentiment that I wish they would have grown in a line less divergent from the music from this album.
Although I enjoyed The Silent Enigma, it was a middle ground between this EP and their full transition with the release of Eternity, an album that I still enjoyed to a lesser extent but they eventually lost me with Alternative 4.
I'm glad they are still making music and I wish them well.
making music for whom? they know clearly that they have betrayed their old loyal fans. I think anathema is trying to gain some stronghold on the elder population just like Pink Floyd.
You must be one of these elitist metaltards who argue about what's the grimmest shit ever when it comes to black metal or something. I cannot fathom how you're somehow managing to make out that they're betraying anyone or selling out when in fact, a vast majority of people who enjoy doom metal enjoy their newer material as well.
A fanbase should not govern what a band makes or does. That's betraying what the members want to do with their music.

Capitalistic? Bullshit.

Showing thanks for support and such is fine, but don't get it into your head you got them anywhere or helped them make any of their music.
When a band starts doing stuff to please a big fanbase, THAT Is when they are "selling out" as you say.
