I love that someone mentioned learning everything (or 75%) from youtube, including how to cook. I believe youtube + wikipedia = more collected human knowledge than anywhere else in history.
@Icabad Both good and bad knowledge. People today need to learn "how" to process all this information. Just because one sees something on YouTube or Wikipedia, does not make it so :)
Does this seem like mostly an American or Western Industrialized problem..? Students complaining of the "system" not fitting their needs and being too dogmatic. Yet, students from India and China come here and DOMINATE academically because they understand you must work and sacrifice your time and yourself to be successful. Quit complaining students, put down Facebook, and do work! Great videos from Professor Wesch
Last time I checked the internet and new medias often require a lot of reading - it is the choice of what people read while on these new medias that should be the question.
Excellent!!!! I liked your videos and ideas!!! . In my country a professor with your qualities is considered crazy. So.... I am crazy, does not matter to me…. everything is by the good of our students.
Tendrías que hacer algún proyecto con los profesores locos también..Me uno a esa propuesta.!!!!! Desde Argentina.... Un abrazo..
Loving this video, but I find the it increasingly hard to concentrate on with the music, but then maybe that is generational too (I'm a 35 year old student)? Even at my college that is a lot more learner centred than most and also includes practical experience, I find the focus on testing, results and achieving standardised narrow goals frustrating. Sometimes the testing (mainly in the form of assignments) helps me learn, but sometimes I feel it gets in the way.
Great video, as always! The music in the background gets a little bit intrusive at points though. Still, I love your work (and the work of your students!)
College is over rated. Especially for the tuition that is charged today. Its a big ponzi scheme. The format and physicality of it is archaic. Do you imagine the great thinkers throughout time would congregate in some college to exchange ideas? Or more likely realize the the vastness and richness of an instant worldwide exchange of ideas, otherwise known as the world wide web?
@flyinbry the exchanging of ideas is not enough in a society which gives better job oppertunities to those that have 'on paper' studied. the stresses of college and university are what tell employers that we are up to the job. while i do agree with you to a certain extent, i feel that college and university will never be overrated whilst society gives better oppertunities to those that brave further education
Ok, we have all agreed that we new to re-create our learning methods. So, what's next? Shouldn't the point be discussing the new format by now? Nevertheless, great job Mr. Wesch.
How about these kids watch Zeitgeist-moving forward?
This video was very interesting... The only critique I have is on future videos maybe turn down the musical audio a little bit so it doesn't overpower the audio commentary. There was a lot of the commentary that I couldn't understand because of this. Other than that, good job! ;)
I believe that without media, students can focus more on schoolwork instead of creating mediocre students from mediocre people. Googling ways to game the system instead of the system gaming them
you should check out what's happening to 13-14 year olds. over the past 6 years i have seen some really dramatic shifts in the way middle school kids think and interact with manipulatives.
This dramatic look at an average college student's life is just that, drama. I am a second year university student and my experience isn't this hectic, miserable, and over-stressful one. The times and technology are changing, yes, but has only provided the means for students to express feelings that have been there for generations. University is supposed to be challenging, but complaining about it and dramatizing it like this is silly.
Just the opinion of a CS major though, what do I know? ;)
"After 2 years in college, 45% of students showed no significant gains in learning;..." Do you think this is equally true between social sciences and physical sciences? Can social studies professors have more of an effect on the students via personal biases then physical science professors? I wonder about topics like art, music and theology, which are a mixture of disciplines. Also what about physical sciences where most answers are approximations. Are students encouraged to explore?
Cool stuff! Just want to let you know that you've made decide to share my knowledge of psychology theories online. I totally agree with you that a classroom is without boundaries.
Yay! I'm really looking forward to following a new project spearheaded by Prof. Wesch! Just got my B.A. in anthro this month (after way too many years). I'll keep looking for you and your students' uploads. They're always fun and thought-provoking. GOOD LUCK and have fun.
Well you read a lot of the time on computers, while texting on phones, and all games have text to read...reading doesn't just apply to books.

@ghudner The facts, figures and statements from that section come from the book 'Generation Me' by Jean M. Twenge.
