  • Great tutorial. Explains layers very well.

  • I have no layer box, and my file drop down does not have a Dialogue option. Hours and hours wasted trying to do the most basic of thing....

  • This might be a stupid question, but is Gimp the same as Photoscape?

  • I'd love to know how to use images in layers - specifically placing one one the other - like a cut-out of a person onto a background image. I have tried on and off for ages but get so frustrated I end up quitting for enough time to calm down. This was a good idea of layers in basic sense, but it didn't really show me the bit I needed.

  • This was a great tutorial you made it so clear to understand even for us beginners so thanks for that. Hope to see some more of your tutorials. Keep em comin Have agreat week

  • THANK U

  • how the FUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK do you select layers? I almost cried 3 minutes ago because ive been trying to click on a fucking layer and erase the bottom portion of it for 1 hour and 30 minutes but ive failed over and over and over and over and over and over a fucking gain. HELLPPPPPP!?!?!?!?!

  • the gimp doesnt let me select other layers and i am getting so frustarated at this.

  • Im very new to gimp and Ive been trying to paint a bit with it but yesterday I came across a bit of a problem. I had finished my background and wanted to start painting in a new layer but in the new layer all the colors were different. Brown was green for example. How can I fix this?

  • Does anyone want him to spell s-L-a-y-e-r? =)

  • No to Comment? uhhh.........Burger!

  • Excellent tutorial. I'm not so afraid of the "scary layers" anymore. Thank you!

  • Thankss GREAT you know what you are doing!

  • BEFORE making this tutorial, MAKE SURE YOU STATE THAT THE "Move the active layer" BUTTON IS CHECKED!!

    THANK YOU!!!

  • GREAT tutorial!!!

  • okay,so what if i want to color and i dont want it to affect the the outline,is there something i can do about that or am i going to have to zoom in on my picture and carefully give it shade?

  • Incredibly helpful. Thank you.

  • Thank you for explaining in plain english. I actually got it !

  • I don't have the "File" tab on my little tools section. What should I do?

  • but how do you add a new layer?

  • outstanding explanation of how to use layers! it helped me alot now im going to go try!! thank you :)

  • yay~ I feel much less pathetic now. thanks for your help.

  • I'm trying to merge two layers I prepaired in Paint... and it won't let me. Please help meD:

  • ur british?! sexxyyyy

  • i'm trying to color a line art on gimp and even try to do it on a diffrent layer. But either it dosent show or it gose over the lines. I know there's a way to fix that but how?

  • Thank you so much you made it so clear for me

  • I think you did a GREAT job explaining layers. I get it now! :) Thank you!

  • ty alot!

  • This is great video,im new to gimp and honestly i was scared thinking about layers-you've really helped-thanks!

  • whenever you cleared ur throat, i jumped and my family stared at me like i was crazy o.O

  • Thanks, this was very helpful :)

  • I love your videos! Very helpful and informative! But I just don't understand how to start a new layer. In this video, they are already open. :(

  • When I put On The pattern It Looks Like a Target Sign, Can You Please Help A.S.A.P... !

  • Nice vid mate! very helpful!!

  • Very helpful, I understand a lot more now, thanks

  • Thank you!!

  • hey Malgalin can you make a new tutorial on Gimp 2.6?

  • atlast hahaha

  • i lost my layers dock in gimp 2.6 or whateva. i looked in the file tab and i couldent find what you showed. was this explained in the other tutorial?

  • Very helpful thank you!!!!

  • this helped me quite alot, stitching forza 3 photo's is alot easier now. thank you!

  • great turtorial .

  • SO i had picture of buildings and i was making them look destroyed... i cut out the sky and pieces of them and usually it would show the gray scales in the back but it didnt for some reason. now im trying to ad some stuff to it and it wont let me so i did layer mask and did gray scale copy of layer layer but that went over the buildings not the background so how do i get the grayscale for the background?

  • my toolbox dissapeared..how to get it back?

  • @alykrem You could try windows/recently closed docks? Or push ctrl + B ?

  • Right, I've copied and pasted a lineart picture from MS Paint and copied it onto GIMP. I make a new layer as the background, and try to colour it without going over the lines. But everytime I draw something, it won't show up. Any tips?

  • @modernwarfare331 You need to make sure you are trying to colour in the right layer. Select the layer you want to work on in the layers dock.

You can see my Pop Art tutorial (the one with the busker) for an extended explanation of colouring in.

  • Do you say Gimp or Jimp

  • thanks! It was really helpful!

  • Ok, I didn't have time to watch the vid so I'll ask my question here. I have a scanner pic of a cat I hand drew. I want to add a layer on it so I can trace the scanner pic but then erase the original and leave only my traced. How would I do that in the simplest way?

  • I have worked inccessantly on these darned GIMP layers for over a month. I have cried and torn my hair out by the roots. In the meantime I learned everything else ... all the finest details of pixels and editing. But when it came to layers .... no dice!

Thanks SOI much for a clear and beautifully pressented tutorial. GIMP should hire you to re-write their TERRIBLE tutorials which seem to omit the essential basics ... and warnings .... which all newbies need. Many many thanks!

  • Okay, so say I have a pre-existing image that I've selected. How can I turn that into its own layer?

By the way, I love your accent >w<

  • Well I am the perfect example of why this tutorial is so awesome.

This is my first time using any form of photo tweaker and in 5 minutes...VIOLA...I can now do basic layers.

    My sincere thanks!!!

  • I already know how to use gimp. But i was struggling with finding my layer tool box. Thx for helping me find it with the begining of the video xD

  • Thanks, this was very useful !

  • The layer dialog menu vanished and I have no "file" option on the tool thingy, its not overly userfreindly maybe thats the reason Ubuntu gave up Gimp?

  • @finnbjerke ctrl+L will bring it back. The upgrade from 2.4 to 2.6 moved the options from the tool dialog to the top of the image window...I personally find that more intuitive.

  • You give a good explication in every video Thanks

  • Great succint explanation, exactly what I was looking for. A great introduction to Layers in Gimp. Cheers.

  • everyone must understand these basics,I always try the most complex projects first and end up totally confused.Good job on this tutorial. Thanks

  • i have gimp 2.6 and it does not have anywhere to get that layers toolbox, its driving me nuts. how do i get that layer tool box when i don't have the file on the toolbox bar and on the regular file it has no dialog options.

  • Thank you very much here from Denmark ^^ :D

  • i waas listening and i was like "pint? pint? what's pint?"

then i found out that it was paint LOL

  • Thank you so much to this tutorial about layers. I just downloaded Gimp yesterday. In other tutorials about Gimp I kept hearing about layers but I had no idea what layers were. This tutorial is easy to understand verbally as well as visually. I recommend this tutorial to anyone that has recently acquired Gimp and may not be familiar with layers. Thumbs up! Saved to Favorites!

  • That's a great way of looking at it. Thanks for making this. ^_^

  • Thank you - just learning Gimp this week and it would've helped me to see your video first - learned most of what is in it by trial and reading, but this is nice, to the point and clearly illustrates the key concepts I'm trying to learn.

  • Thankyou so much! I uploaded gimp yesturday and have been trying really hard to figure it out! You have just saved me from many hours of frustraition! Thankyou!

  • Hi, thaks for all the tutorials which really help me loads. However, I am stuck on one thing. When I create a button in GIMP with "get instant access" text on it and get it to NVU and then upload it via FileZilla onto my webpage, the button actually doesn't appear, only the text "get instant access" does. Could you tell me what I am doing wrong? Than you very much and I hope you shall keep these tutorials going.

  • Brilliant tutorial my friend. But i have one question or a situation i guess: I do make sure i am on the right layer when i use the filler or paint tool but it always messes up the layers in front of it and i do not for the life of me understand why. Any suggestions for this problem? Either way thank you for your helpful tutorial so far. :)

  • Excellent. ONly thing, is when done, how to save all the layers into a photo or picture when done with all yuor layers.

  • ok i'm new to this and am trying to color a picture i drew on here... layers is really what i need to learn but im still lost

  • Hi.

I am editing a picture right now. i have a few layers on it. But i have saved the project i am doing. But the GIMP is stil open, it hasnt been closed. My problem is that there a layer on the picture that i need to be sized down. But its not on the layers list. Its not a layer anymore, its apart if the one picture i think. Can anyone help me please

  • I just got gimp and it was working fine, but now the layers toolbox has disappeared and don't know how to get it back!

  • @fitzjay01 ctrl+L

  • I just got gimp and it was working fine, but now the layers toolbox has disappeared and don't know how to get it back!

  • @KELLY1231301

CTRL+L brings up the layer box.

  • good job. thanks

  • Excellent tutorial thanks. Especially the bit at the end about linking layers. I'm glad you threw that it, I was reading about that in the manual but didn't get it. Thanks again

  • Very nice tutorial. thank you.

  • Is there a way to delete multiple layers?

  • Thanks for this great Gimp layers tutorial malgalin

  • i dont have file on my tool bar how do i place it.. or a command that allows me to se my layers toolbar?

  • @HaKuBoMb

    layers = ctrl+L

File is now located above them image window.

  • @HaKuBoMb go to the windows section on gimp and it has the delockable dialogs on their to get you layer tool bar back

  • man, I feel like an idoit now... -_-'

  • would you consider making a free downloadable template for making dvd covers and cd covers? All the free templates on the web presently are for other programs. reldas11

  • @reldas11 probably not, to be honest.

  • How about how to "anchor layers in GIMP" I have read the instruction provided by the gimp developers and they make no seance at all LOL.

  • I'm already lost by 1.33 ! My GIMP just says toolbox .It does not have File ,Xtras ,Help.Neither does it have the option to make the box bigger where it says GIMP. I have downloaded the version for Windows .Is it defective ? Help please..

  • how do you fade layers into eachother? i dont want the top transparent i want to fade

  • Very Good,

  • When I have a line drawing (Not made on GIMP) and I add a background and a colour layer, I am still going over my black line...

  • gimp wont let me add layers? the box is shaded out and when i open a picture it doesnt open as a layer? :/ i may be sounding like a complete retard here but what do i do?

  • Comment removed

Thelayers won't move. Like I'm trying to rearrangee to order, And it just keeps goin bak Intoo place.

    -.-'

  • @IPhotoGraphBeauty You use the move tool (shortcut key is M) and you make sure you have the correct layer selected when you want to move it.

  • FINALLY someone explains layers! thanks so much!

  • i closed my lathers window how do i open it?

  • Downloaded Gimp last night, ideal introduction for me. I want to do the steriotypical mono picture with target part in colour so this has made that obtainable as a starting project. Thankyou for posting

  • thanks for taking the time - I am a beginner. I cant find my layers under file dialogue, create. Wondered if you could help?

  • Well done... thank you!

  • Dude, you are a life saver. It's funny how the concept of something so simple eluded me. I am a "real" artist so I always hated computer programs, but I think it's time to shed my close minded background and get with the times. Thank you so much for this helpful tutorial!

  • best layers tutorial, thumbs up if you agree

  • great tutorial. and perfectly pitched at a novice - such as myself who hand draws and uses collage. i am now signing up to your channel/other tutorials - thanks

  • @jeffdobbelf I did the same thing about 4 years ago!

  • @malgalin omg..ME TOO D:

  • @malgalin me 2

  • @jeffdobbelf hahaha yeah I did that too!

  • @jeffdobbelf OMG I JUST DID THIS, like five minutes ago ... wtf -_-

  • I don't have that control panel window on the far left..

    How do i get it?

  • Great tutorial. Just what I needed to get the job done. Thanks.

  • every thing i do to one layer happens to them all!!!!!

  • @justinness Are you sure it doesn't just appear to happen to all of them because of transparency in the layer? Try making the layer you just worked on invisible to see if the changes you made to it really did happen on the layers underneath too.

  • @malgalin actully sure you banana now add me or perish!!!!!!

    that is all

  • i cant open that layers menu! =/ any other ways? i got gimp 2.6.

  • @FlyVzla ctrl+L

  • @FlyVzla or from the menus above the image window select Windows -> Dockable Dialogs -> Layers

  • @FlyVzla windows>recently closed docks>and layers!

  • Does he ever say how to actually make a layer?

  • @chizoioioi Who is he? The third person makes me uncomfortable...I'm not God, after all. And because I am not God, merely a fallen, broken, humble man, I may occassionally not actually say the most basic thing. So: He didn't actually say how to make a layer, but if you ask him nicely, he might let you in on the secret...

  • Great tutorial.Thanks.

  • Thank you for a basic and clear tutorial on layers. I'm new to this type of program and need all the basics I can find. :)

  • dialogs isnt even here on mine??

  • @Danny121208 ctrl+L

  • You seem pretty clever, I work alot with text, how do I change the size and font of words in the middle of a block of txt, Or is Gimp really shite at text, please give us a clue mate,

  • @pyanji Unfortunately, Gimp does not do well with text. You can work around this problem by creating multiple text boxes and changing the size and font of those, but since Gimp currently only lets you change the font and size a of a whole text box there isn't a quick or easy solution.

  • this is a prison sentence not an application

  • @luckylangerie yes, for the crime of previously pirating software ;)

  • I'm trying to trace over a scanned drawing.

    I duplicated the layer ...

How do I hide the original image, leaving the background white, without hiding the stuff that I traced??

    ...I'm so frustrated

  • great tutorial mate ty so much :)

  • Does any one no how to get the brush resizing tool bk... i clicked somethng by accident and now when i click on paintbrush the brush comes in one size I want to resize it bigger. I dont see the dialogue please help xx

  • Awesome mate thank-you so much for this!

  • Thanks, always wanted to learn how to use layers, successfully used them after seeing your vid. Thanks again.

  • Really good tutorial. Thanks for uploading. I checked your channel out, I subscribed :).

  • (add to other comment) I dont have that dialog box, so I can't get my layers box back! What do I do?!

  • @MagicSapphire115 ctrl+L

  • The box that shows the layers disappeared on my screen, how do I get it back?

  • Is there any adobe photo shop that are free?

  • @WeAreWhiteKids Only if you download a pirate version - which is not cool. Otherwise GIMP does pretty much everything you want Photoshop to do, it is free, legal and opensource.

  • OH BOY ! ! ! Did I need this. I am just learning GIMP and the lingo used in The gimp written tutorials left me scratching my head feeling dumb.. your clear direction sure helps.

  • nice video quality and sound. equally impressive the tutorial is exactly as the title describes, nice work :)

  • i only have 2 questions wheres the move tool like o photoshop and wheres the quick mast
