I'm happy they didn't made a sequel of it. (if the box office was good they would've made a sequel I've read on IMDb) Because now it has an open end so we all can fill it in with our own imaginarium what would've happened next, probably he would've killed his own daugther.
I understand the ending *it was a nightmare* blah blah blah.. but it would have been a lot better if it would have ended with the neck scene.. ...take dane cook out of this movie, and i'de give it 4.5 out of 5.... the neck scene is soo brilliant, the camera, the effects, and song.. perfect
nick... watch the ending again. I thought it was brilliant. Yes, I too loved the "dream sequence" with The Veils "Vicious Traditions" playing over it, but take note that when that sequence ends it is the voice of William Hurt (Marshall) who shouts "Jane." At that point Mr. Brooks wakes up and begins to recite the serenity prayer (which he typically does before he commits a murder.) It seems to me this scene at the end indicates that Mr. Brooks has come to realize that he must kill his daughter.
Unbelievable how this movie could not do better at the box office as well in the critics, they like crap like Avatar, Paranormal BS etc....how shallow can it get? As soon something has a bit complicated story, people seem to be irritated! Sad enough and an actually good sign how superficial people nowadays are!
It is to me one of the best endings I've seen in a movie on top of a great movie!!

This movie was horrible, i got bored 10mins into and had to force myself to finish it... i wish i didnt should have took the hint it was going to suck throughout the whole thing. *sighs*
Can you explain the ending?? I lovvvvvved the movie, but I think the ending is a little weird..Maybe I just dont understand it.??
my ending- He wakes up from the dream and makes a loud enough sound that his daughter comes in the room...sit in between the wife and Mr.Brooks and yada yada, and says..I m keeping the baby..then it ends..
that's all decent and all, but it changes the entire tone of the movie, they had to keep the mystical vibe that it put off, which is why i think that they did the perfect ending for the movie.
My understanding is that the murderers who have instincts were inherited by the daughter, and pays well the consequences. She was the one who killed him... his own daughter
At last! I've been searching the name of that song since I watched the movie. It gives me chills, the song creates the perfect scenario for the ending scene.
this was a great movie, I really don't understand the mixed reception it received from critics. Alot of people attacked it for being "convoluted", "hard to follow", "delusional", etc. I had no problem following it, I thought that yeah the events in this movie might not happen in reality, but guess what, it's a movie, it's gonna take a few stretches. Do you think jedi really exist? or that ancient indian priests want your blood (indiana jones and temple of doom lol), no because it's a movie.
The lyrics of the song don't make much sense in the scene, but I don't give a shit. I don't think a more perfect mood could have been set by any other song. It's definitely a feel, don't think about it moment. One of my favorite movie sequences of the decade
I think that the person who uploaded this did that on purpose, because it makes it less likely that the video will be taken down. if it's cut up a little bit, maybe it's less likely to be detected. not totally sure.
I love the look on the detective, when she says "That wasn't Baffert", i can only imagine what is she thinking in that moment, something like "You son of a bitch..."
The daughter reminds me of Juliette Lewis in Natural Born Killers...just in this scene. I like how she backs away with her back stiff as he reaches for her. At first I thought it was real, not a dream. The line, "...for all the good intentions." aka him trying to cover up for his daughter was perfect. I believed (till he woke up) that after all his caution & planning he'd sliped...wa-bam...and his daughter kills him. Kinda glad it was a dream. It kept the errie edge to the film.
dude he kills some guy at the school exactly the way the daughter killed a guy (hatchet) so as to ensure that his daughter wasnt a suspect anymore, because she wasnt there at the time of the 2nd murder - thus ruling her out as a possible suspect.
The whole reason why they put this at the end of the movie is becuase when he found out that she dropped out of school he was curoius why and then there were 2 homicides at the school and he gets thinking that his daughter did the killings because he thinks that she has the same illness as he does which is that he is addticted to killing, so that's why he has a dream of him getting stabbed by jane and that after he dies the killing will countine with jane being the killer addict and not Earl
Doesn't he commit the second murder at the school to throw the police of his daughter's trail? There was that whole sequence with him on the plane with the disguise and him driving with a hatchet.
Another gloification of murder allowing sympathy for the murderer. The number of films containing this doctrine are on the rise and yet we continue to allow them to play and lead albeit , by the nose into the box office. Possibly the gateway to Hell on earth itself.
Let's not go overboard. Playing devil's advocate is fun. Who wants to watch people be a goody two- shoes? You might have a point but this is a grat movie...
You're a fucking loser. Your over-analytical views on Hollywood film have no basis on human behavior (minus the fuck-tards who weren't raised properly to know any better). How bout tackling the problem of poor upbringing before pointing your finger at the film industry. Film is expression, ideas, imagination, fiction and not always based on reality or the rational thought of human beings. The sooner you and other idiots realize this the better. If you did not enjoy the movie, do not watch it.
great movie! unbelivable to see the 2 sides of Kevin Costnar. I feel that there is a question that needs discussion for the end......all these sins, and he continues to live in the end??? right or wrong,?
Mr. Brooks didn't make noise @ the box office. I don't why. This is the best suspenseful movie I've ever seen. Unpredictable, beautifully written, casted, & performed. Love everything about it.
This movie was unexpectedly good. This is one of the best uses of a popular song in a movie, in recent memory. I'm now looking forward to see what the director of the film does next.
Her face is almost of curiosity. She is amazed by the sught if the blood but she enoys it. I like it when Mr Brooks reaches out to his daughter and she backs away.
I'm not sure if this is him reaching out to attack her but I think he is reaching out in forgiveness. He knows why she did it for he also likes killing.
Well, by putting that ending, they show an open ending: will mr Brooks kill her daughter at last? Appartfrom the fact that it'd be a very unreal ending (no serial killer kills without such a lack of care)
is it me or is there a floorboard creak just as he finishes the prayer, as if the daughter might be on the otherside of the door for some reason? i am convinced but noone else seems to hear it :(
And really. think about danielle panabaker (His daughter) Before this, all she did was disney movies. Seriously, this was her first non-disney one. and she did SUCH,and amazing job being insanely crazy in this scene. This is my favorite ending of any movie. Ive watched it about 10 times.
Kevin costner did amazing too. Great movie, but very underrated,no-one gave it a chance.
it WAS underrated. the daughter was also in an episode of law and order svu. she killed her mom viciously in it. she was really good at playing that as well
@Cielosta she was dating this guy a few years older than her and her alcoholic mom catches them having sex and wants him arrested and she ends up bashing her over the head a million times... her lawyer tried to blame it on her pms and olivia talks about her mom's alcoholism. its a good episode
he should of not woke up, the movie would of been much better, think about it, you dont judgee this man anymore, u fall into his ego as he fell into his own, u admire him. so it would been on the sympathetic shock side, and reall twisted, it would of been muchh muchh better
Costner was excellent, but the real magic came from Hurt, and the chemistry between the two characters. By far the best on screen killer I've ever seen. If only the Demi Moore subplot could have been removed, that hallway shootout was totally out of place.
I disagree, brooks was totally ace and could leave 0 evidence while his daughter was kind of a spoiled brat and brooks had to clean up after her, I would have been really pissed if brooks got killed by her, the movie gets you really liking brooks and sort of disliking his daughter so having her actually kill him would have upset a lot of the viewers
Brilliant movie. At first I thought it wasn't a dream because it didn't end right away they went until he died so I was like "OOOOH MY GOOOOD". It would have been a giant TWIST if it hadn't been a dream but at the same time I would have been like WTF!
I would have liked it better if he didn't wake up... Still one of my favorite movie. And I have to admit that in someways, it can still end well the movie if he wakes up.
sorry, putting on the glasses and keeping that ending would've been too cliche. she'd have been caught and everything he represented as a family man would've died with him, including her relevence.
What's this song called and who the band. thanks

It would have been a giant TWIST if it hadn't been a dream but at the same time I would have been like WTF!

i agree PsychoPredator666 but since he woke up its open for a second movie i second one would be interesting

I would have liked it better if he didn't wake up... Still one of my favorite movie. And I have to admit that in someways, it can still end well the movie if he wakes up.

The ending worked well as a dream. What better for a serial killer to be haunted by, then being killed by the thing he loves most?

everyone says great ending and so did i up until the point where he woke up.
if it ended right after she put the glasses on it would have been fucking perfect!
what a great story and song at the end.
mattingly17 2 years ago
sorry, putting on the glasses and keeping that ending would've been too cliche. she'd have been caught and everything he represented as a family man would've died with him, including her relevence.
