The Raider couching stand unanimously decided to let Hendricks go after the 1979 season. They thought he was over the hill. Al Davis overruled the and said no way Hendrcks would stay. The result was Hendricks being turned loose to freelance and having his greatest year in 1980. The Raiders against all odds won the superbowl as a wildcard entry. Hendricks made four straight pro bowls - 1980, 81, 82, 83. He was voted in the pro football hall of fame in 1990.
Dave Casper you could not block Ted Hendricks if he didn't want you to. Hendricks ruined Notre Dame former Notre Dame standout TE Ken MacAffee's career before it really got started. John Madden said that MacAfee clipped Hendricks in the back during a 1978 preseason game. This was MacAfee's rookie year. Well Hendricks played the rest of the game like it was the superbowl. MacAfee was demoralized and never became anything more than an NFL journeyman.
Ted Hendricks was too small for DE,too big for LB, and too valuable to be wasted in a conventional outside role. With a defense tailored to his phenomenal instincts & physical ability, Hendricks was a free-lance defensive terrorist, blitzing on most passsing situations. This confused QBs & punished RBs who regularly found themselves out-finnessed & unable to keep those long, clawing arms from hooking the passer.
Ted set table stakes with his own style of befuddling QBs & blitzing pass protection. TEs could not reach block him & he strung sweep-pulling guards right into the first row.Hendrick's excellent leverage, good foot speed, & sinuous 6-7 frame gave him the physical tools while his intelligence, intensity, & anticipation made him an on-scrimmage coach.
ted was everything they said--and a nice, gentlemanly guy off the field. I thought Alzado was stranger
