Hi, im looking for the video on how to set mixer volume/amp volume/amp line volume etc. (so all the volumes) what level to have each one for the best, clear feedback free audio. Cheers, Toby
What are you actually doing with your headphones? Do you play mix the second song with the first one (playing out loud), and just bring in the second song?
Hey i have been DJing for a couple of months now, learned everything from scratch from this man, he is mint and the best dj tutor by far on the internet, please look on my channel and tell me what you think of my mini mix's, all feedback welcome as it will help me improve cheers
Personally, I like to use the cue with my headphones, I have a Numark DXM06 so I can monitor whichever channel I want to, and if I do both, I can beatmatch by ear that way. This is a great tutorial, I just find it a little complicated to do this, haha
Look Jonathan, since I practiced djing as a hobby, i've always used both headphones on both ears and listening to both records when beatmatching. so i have a little crossfader for the headphones and when I beatmatch i set it in the middle. I find it better too for matching the gainvolume. Please tell me what you think. cheers
But if you want to match the volume of your headphones and the volume of the speakers and your speakers are not loud enough for example on a party but your headphones are already very loud wath can you do ?
double the speaker and amplifier arrangement until you have enough amplitude, otherwise turn down your headphones. you DONT want to monitor LOUD anyways, just match your cans to the amps.
how can i get rid of the delay in my sound system? when im monitoring, i don't hear the sound from my speakers instantly, but actually a split second later, so when im trying to beatmatch it makes life hard. is ther a better way to set my speakers up? do they need to be behind me?...rather than beside or infront of me?
are you going through a computer? inherent latency in digital systems ya know. you can change the buffer rate if you are. Apples have lower latency than ASIO as well.
Jonathan, I recently bought my first DJ kit and I've been using your videos to try and learn the basics of mixing and the likes. I very much appreciate the time and effort you put into making these videos, and they are entertaining as well as educational - I can learn with a big fat grin on my face because of the energy that you display. Many thanks!
listen to how you only hear high pitch sounds at soft volumes, also, take reference to how much bass against highs you hear as you move away from the source. if you are in an untreated space, your room acoustics are almost guaranteed to be compromised for any kind of accurate referencing but no two spaces are alike anyways. your best shot is to emulate mixes you like id say.
this guy is spot on ... if only i`d known a decade ago instead of having an earphone clammed sooo tight to my ear trying to block out an overnuked monitor lol, thing i`m gonna dust my decks off its been too long
Thanks for this Johnathan. I've been DJing for a while but I've always been interested in how different DJs setup their headphones etc.
I have a question regarding split or blend. I tend to use split with my headphones if I'm spinning at home as I don't have monitor speakers, but when I'm out I find the single headphone/monitor the best setup.
Would you agree with this as a good way to practise for live events (when not having monitor speakers available)? Many thanks
As an audio engineer and sound system designer for some of the worlds top performers for the past 28 years, I believe I can give a qualified opinion on this tutorial. This guy is dead on. Truly excellent. Every DJ should subscribe. I know I will, because frankly it's refreshing to hear true knowledge.
This works fine at home but how would I do it at a club? The venue I'm spinning at has two loud monitors facing down on the booth. Last time I blasted them and got overwhelmed. I had too cause the club's speaker where starting to be louder than the monitors.. help?

you forgot to say practice and enjoy :(

You can't do this with every track you mix, because the gain levels are all different on every track

I usually just use my headphones on completely. Whats wrong with just using headphones, instead of using 1 side and the monitors.
using both headphones seems more accurate to me

what kind of amp/speakers/sound sys are you using
some amps and wrong settings will cause a delay

What is the record you're using here J?

I'm still having trouble monitoring. Maybe my ears just suck and need more training.

Have you tried switching ears? Maybe your other ear is dominant.

very nice information. please keep up the good work because i cant find anyone better than you.

I think what your trying to say is keep your monitor and headphone levels as quiet as you can get away with.
Doing this helps a lot :)

O yes!! at the end of the day , you don't need the sound blasting, if anything by having it too loud is not helping at all.

-Set gain (with upfaders up) to zero DB at the loudest passage of the song. Then adjust your amp's gain and you headphone gain.
NOTHING should ever go into the red (+db) gains. Using the multimeter to set "master out" is also important.
monomerx001 5 years ago
Have I missed the lesson where you give information how to set all the volumes (slider, gain, master, amp). Or is it still coming?
syntse 5 years ago
There is a video on this , i think it's titled how to use the bass mid top, what are they for, or something like that!
ellaskins 5 years ago
wow, i just slam both upfaders up to level 10! and use the trim to get the eq matched to the master level. I'll try this.
