  • Love Daniel´s Lyrik. Greetz from Germany

  • 43 person doesnt have any Friendly Ghost

  • Why does his guitar sound out of tune?

  • @grabowskikonrad it's just the style; Daniel plays with what he has. Besides, it's more about the passion than technicalities.

  • @grabowskikonrad Because it is out of tune. But he is so good, it does not even matter.

  • I want a T2 hat

  • So did the studio ever actually use this version in the show/movie?

  • im guessn his guitar is broke, out of tune and thats a rock hard pick hes beating it with.but i otta say daniel is badass.

  • @soggyponcho Self reflection time? Look in the mirror F%^& stick. Go chew on a light cord...better yet remove your eyelids and pepper spray yourself continually.

  • Aw my names daniel johnston , and i also play the guitar, unfortunatly, u suck

  • Daniel is as he has always been...just Daniel ...some good, some bad.

  • Hi guys,

My name is Sid from UK independent clothing brand Retreat.

The two designs are entitled "Lost Death" and "Alone With My Thoughts"

both designs are £20.00 each printed using waterbased ink

  • hahaha i can't stop laughing while watching this

  • Guitar sounds like shiiiit.

  • @umphreak183 But how were the lyrics?

  • @ihateyoushauna The lyrics are great... Daniel Johnston is awesome, don't get me wrong. The buzz on that guitar drives me up the fucking wall though.

  • @umphreak183 i know what you mean you'd think he would have bort himself a good guitar by now

  • I agree with vaerhdf6. While I don't think the music is terrible, had this come from some average joe, nobody would think twice about it. If Daniel wasn't insane, his popularity would not have increased the way it did.

  • @srgtfrog An average joe would not talk about the things he talks about with the sincerity he posses

  • @omgstfudavid Neither do most artists, and I don't just mean musicians.

  • @srgtfrog I disagree. Several artists have covered his songs and shown how great they were to those who didn't have ears to listen to Daniel's music. M. Ward's cover of "To Go Home" is one of many examples

  • @Janus414 I agree his poems are very good. I'm just saying he wouldn't be so popular if he wasn't "insane". There are literally hundreds of great artists out there with excellent lyrics, none of them have ever been seen because they don't have a gimmick. I hate to call it that though, but I can't think of another word :P

  • @srgtfrog I'd love to hear about these gimmickless geniuses that are going unnoticed. I mean this curiosly. If there are other great songwriters that rival DJ, and I haven't heard them yet...I'd love to. His music is great, I'd love to hear more like.

  • @elewewhy I was speaking generally :P

  • i wana climb through the computer and fix his guitar

  • @skok1313

    rofl

  • hauntingly beautiful.

    daniel is a beautiful man.

  • I'd really like to meet this man, so I could shake his hand. I really admire him. A pure artist is hard to find.

  • @vaerhdf6

have you ever listened to any of his albums? his piano and lyrics are genius. some people like you don't have an ear for it.

  • @vaerhdf6 retarded? obvious disabilities? you are a myopic lil man i bet he'd write a great song re you lol

  • @vaerhdf6 then why do you watch it and why comment? grow up pussy

  • @vaerhdf6 Daniel Johnston was famous prior to his mental illnesses taking their toll on him. He had videos on MTV and everything in the 80s/90s and then the little fame he had just threw him in the gutter and stomped all over him.

Present, the above video, he's on psychological drugs and they're making him seem like he is in the video. Although, off the drugs, he would be completely insane.

  • everybody respects the dead

  • dead leaves and the dirty ground when i know your not around

  • Daniel Johnston is quite simply the best. A living legend.

  • dude i love this so much.

  • I like him because Kurt liked him.

  • @gubbj stfu faggot

  • <333333love live forever

  • <333333

  • I would do just about anything to see him play his songs live!

  • @bssalazar should of went to Starry Nights music festival in Bowling Green, KY last week! Daniel KILLED it.

  • YEEEEEEEE

  • heya is there a way you can post the song 'man at war' ?

  • ..."but everyone respects the dead"

  • smiling through his own personal hell

  • G, C, & D are the only chords Daniel ever bothered to learn on guitar.

  • =)))

  • I met him. He went to my high school. My friend's uncle and he were best friends in high school. Our band director has a picture that Daniel drew for him. He used to go into the band room and play piano, skipping classes.

  • no hes a genius and he is bipolar with acid flash backs which is why hes so strange sometimes. but a freaking genius! love Story of an Artist

  • he is a genius, and he is bipolar

  • @Fefesk82

genius? talented yes, mentally disturbed, yes... genius, i REALLY doubt it... a genius at being a talented mentally disturbed alternative folk singing cartoonist and other things? yes, i guess

  • @glorp896

    why not a genius?

  • @Fefesk82

mental cases score low on IQ tests Schizophrenics have much lower IQ scores than non-schizophrenics

i've seen the peer review publications and evidence

  • @glorp896 Can he be called an idiot-savant?

  • @imasuperbeaver

good question - interestingly when you are full blown schizo you are less creative, but with SOME schizo predilections, schizoid, you are actually more creative... Many people involved with the arts, such as Vincent van Gogh, are believed to have suffered from bipolar disorder, like D.John. who had such a diagnosis...

the arts don't have as good a duplicative measure of IQ compared to fields like math and logic... in any case DJ was quite creative, unique and worth a look...

  • @glorp896 true except he's bi polar not schizophrenic. Wesley Willis was

  • @Traductus5972

there is actually an overlap of symptoms... you can have hallucinations as both a schizo and bipolar... over course there are varying degrees, i'm not sure where DJ appears on these scales, but it would be interesting to see... he claims he had a nervous breakdown during one of his recordings... probably just in his manic state, energized to do creative work, that actually a benefit of bipolor disorder - but the depressive stage is not so energizing and creative...

  • @glorp896 Do you know what 'people first' language' is? You disgusting bigoted moron?

  • @MrGrevy

People first language is a form of politically correct linguistic prescriptivism aiming to avoid perceived and subconscious dehumanization when discussing people with disabilities. like instead of say THE RETARDED OLYMPICS we say THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS or instead of saying DJ was a nut case we say he was a highly talented artist or even a genius as some like to say... is that good enough for you? do you know what a moron is? or even a bigot? i'm guided by the empirical data...

  • @MrGrevy disgusting bigoted moron doesn't sound very PC, but if its a way of protecting nut cases and the dumb the lefties need all this bleeding heart liberal protection for them using such harsh language? Nell, Sling Blade, Forrest Gump, I am Sam, Precious, etc... all these wonderful special people worshiped by hollywood and given more credit than people far more important, the average working middle american, which of course would make for a very boring movie...

  • @glorp896 I am guided by empirical data as well. I am also guided by the recovery model and consumer driven practice. They are not necessarily the same thing.

  • Comment removed

  • @GeorgeWentHensley

that was the best REMOVED comment i've ever received in my email... why did you remove it?, you made a good point or two for sure - innocence you mention, yes, this is also some level of appeal for those watching these "weird" people movies... i neglected to mention THE RAIN MAN, maybe the best of this genre and breed of movie

you should repost your well written thoughtful comments... gee whiz, what?, are you some kind of egoless special person that looks down on himself?;)

  • @glorp896 Of course real people are more important than fictional characters...what's your point?

Now... I';m gonna write a screenplay about an average working American. It will be a study in despair tied to a life of perceived failures and jealousy of anyone with more perceived succes than him. Working title: GLORP.

  • @elewewhy the rain man was a real person in case you didn't know...

GLORP? there was GARP... robin williams... look up that movie...

you can use my channel as a head start... but i don't think this will work... i'm very well educated... have lots of money... many trophies during my sport "career (several first places and all-stars...)... i love my parents... i WISH i had more despair that i could channel into more success, but i'll just have to settle for retiring about 10 years early...

  • @ele as to people more successful than i am i like to use TONY ROBBINS idea of modeling... try to be like them not in SPITE of them but because they have characteristics you might be able to duplicate and match or even exceed, so i sing all due praise to those of us that have risen to the top; the left wing, like our media, is fond of favoring losers who get a disproportionate level of handouts compared to the smart hard working successful, who, if TOO successful, get losers to make $ for them

  • @glorp896 Please post it.

  • daniel johnston is a god XD \m/

  • The "studio" version is much better.

  • jajajaajajajajajajajjajajajajajajjajaajjaajajaajAJAJAJAJAAJAJAJAJAAJJAJA!!!!!!!!!!!

  • his guitar sounds all fretty and rattly

  • You cannot judge him on one performance. You have to research him and learn him and his life and listen to all of his music.

  • da best! he's inspired my music making and the process more than anyone and i rap.

I always think of this track metaphorically when seeing people grapple with complex character issues in a time of 'perfection'. The friendly monster is how he saw himself and although it's simplistic, which is usually the genius of DJ, as a metaphor it's run all through my life and i see it in so many others psyche's.

  • He just is and the people who say no you must considered what is missing in them that they need to bother.

  • I SALUTE YOU!!!!

  • i saw this guy dropping fries at a texas mcdonalds.

  • Lol. This guy is up there with Nirvana.

  • Kurt Idolized Daniel Johnston

  • @mattdasurfdude and that can be seen in a lot of nirvana songs that werent radio hits. mollys lips and son of a gun are two songs that immediately come to mind that clearly draw inspiration from daniel johnston. im not a huge fan of nirvana overall, but those songs are just great in my opinion

  • @bpjoyce10 Molly's Lips isn't Nirvana's song, it's a cover of the Vaselines.

  • @bpjoyce10 true that, mollys lips and son of a gun as well as jesus dont want me for a sunbeam i think are all vaselines songs though.

  • @mattdasurfdude why? because daniel johnson is also a bad guitar player lolcopter i was fuggin wit u they r both the shizz especially johnston man wow man just listenin to this its so inspiring dude like a can of shit u would find in dreamland ou know what i mean. like its shitty and beautiful hich makes it like a golden butterfly like flyin in the room

  • @mattdasurfdude Kurt who?

  • @SchoolYardOrgee Cobain

  • @SchoolYardOrgee Cobaine

  • @mattdasurfdude cobain?

  • @solokeith5000 yes kurt cobain wore his shirts.

  • @mattdasurfdude well, we don't truly know. he said that he liked him and appeared with the "how are you" t shirt. Same model I'm wearing now. who cares? Daniel is awesome.

  • @pituparanoico Considering he wore that shirt hundreds of times, pretty much everywhere, I think he liked the album pretty much.

Or maybe he only liked the shirt... But I'm pretty sure he liked Daniel, okay? EVERYONE LIKES DANIEL!

  • pure genius

  • An Amazing and unique talent I don't think his ability on the guitar is spectactular however he is excelent on the piano. His lyrics and drawings and purity of heart is where the magic happens.Daniel Johnston is by nature authentic in his being. You can always learn to play the guitar the same cannot be said for being authentic. I agree about the Steve Vai comment.

  • I want to meet Daniel. Can anyone help me?

  • Let's have some love for Daniel, please.

  • humbling

  • He is a real gansta

  • I like his appearance.. He's cute ^^ It goes great with his personality

  • inspiration

  • @gauchebag, you are absolutely wrong. Wrong wrong wrong. I have nothing else to say really, what you said is just false in every regard.

  • mountain goats, weakerthans, DJ... vocal originality.

  • im a a fifteen year old singer, and im just looking to be heard, if you would to actually take the time to listen to the song on my channel and comment, i would really appreciate it.

  • sucks

  • ...no money no bizness no bullshit.....this is INDIPENDENT MUSIC...not rancid, ratm & bla bla bla..I love you Dan...

  • yyeeaahh that's great.

    5/5

  • aren't we all smiling through our own personal hells?

  • Is this Don Vito Covering Daniel Johnston.

  • the devil and daniel johnston was so depressing...

  • @returnofbeaux beautifully depressing, so real it was shocking. a brilliant documentary i think.

  • yeah. it hit a little close to home for me, though.

  • FUCK DIS IM GOING HOME

  • "he was smiling through his own personal hell."

"he was hoping too close but then he fell."

falling into insanity is pretty damn deep i assume.

  • I don't know why he doesn't get a better guitar

  • word to that, poor guys guit is fretting out badly

  • @gorramdoll he's poor and doesn't make any money off music becaue he's really not good enough that anyone wants to pay him

  • @gauchebag LOL are you serious

  • Tuned into the heart of a human..this dude is amazing!

  • The funny thing is that his guitar playing appeals to me more than Steve Vai.

  • @Jerdna3 because its not so commercial

  • @Jerdna3 its called feel, people without a sense of feel, have to rely on technique...

  • @ollecarlsson and without any talent people have to make excuses for awful sounding music

  • that cant be true

  • @Jerdna3 theres just no way

  • @Jerdna3 hahaha i agree

  • @Jerdna3 me and my band spend so much time acquiring gear and songs we dont have any time left for realizing that

  • @Jerdna3 are you kidding? who the fuck is steve vai. don't want to say that his guitar playing is ingenious or something. but don't compare good indie artist to some, excuse me, overrated mainstream rock artist

  • @LaVieLeHow

you mad bro? I just commented on how i LIKE Daniel Johnston's guitar playing more than Steve Vai's playing, im not putting them in competition with each other, its just funny how you can practice 8 hours a day for years and become a technically amazing guitarist and then some kid who can barely play the instrument picks it up and people will think hes amazing

    because he is

...not that there's anything wrong with wanting to become technically proficient

  • @Jerdna3 that's what you call soul, not even a lifetime of practice can, in the end, replace making the music out of your fullest heart and emotions. you're right man, i just misread your statement i guess. sorry if it seemed offensive

  • @vaerhdf6 lol

  • that actually made me laugh. dude, the reason you keep going back is because we are naturally interested in the things we don't fully understand. all music conveys meaning, some just isn't on the surface as much as others. there's a warped soul who plays consistently cool pop music in that "guy".

  • he's a good songwriter

you expect not to like him because his voice is unusual and he's not that good at playing guitar, but he really is a good writer and that gets through

  • he looks like Bam's uncle Don Vito

  • Yeah! I was watching both Daniel Johnston & Don Vito last night & was thinking " Are they twins?"

  • wow he had a fucked up life and was amazing but noth a good guitarist
