This was my favourite part as a kid. A lot of the time with these games you have to use items blindly. At least this makes some intuitive sense, in a fairy-tale kind of way of course. But that just makes it all the neater.

You'll notice the dwarves all protect their specific senses until it's time to use them to test the intruder. The nose gnome takes off the clothespin, the hands takes off his gloves, the ears takes out his earplugs, the taste sticks out his tongue, and the sight opens his eyes. That's the reason why he doesn't see Alexander before he uses the ink.
