I honestly didnt like Skating with the Stars, figure skaters were just jealous that the pro dancers got a show and they didnt. I hated it and think they shouldnt even had created the show. I found SWTS strangely fascinating. I would love to see Vince Neil go all the way, even though he does look a little overstuffed and too eager-to-please for a rock legend. You’re right, Laurieann needs to dig a little deeper … or just be replaced with someone who has a clue.
In Canada we have Battle of the Blades.. where they pair a hockey player with a pro figure skater.. it's becoming quite popular, and much better than "Skating with the Stars".. :l

i'm an ice skater and all of the "advice" that choreographer judge is wrong! it bugged me sooo much and how she said you have to spot when you spin is soooo wrong, if you spot when you spin in competition you wouldn't get a high score for that spin.

Buck, ABC didn't get the idea from Dancing with the Stars, its been done countless times before. The UK has Dancing on Ice, and Canada's version Battle of the Blades. Hell, FOX did one called Skating with Celebrities, which lasted one season.
I've never heard of this, and don't plan on watching it. But if you did get on the show in season two I would watch it just to see you and vote for you every single night, whether you were terrible or great!!! ;)

when i watched it(the whole thing too- barely made it through though) i thought the same things you did. bugged out eyes- creeeeeepy. i love to watch ice skating and was super excited about this show ,but once bethanny gets booted off(which im sorry to say should be soon) i prolly will tell my dvr to forget it.
I understand them scoring 5 since it was the first night and there is lots of room for improvement.
Totally agree though about the host...he was really creepy and bad at hosting. Love me some Johnny Weir but I did want to hear at least some 'faboluous' in there!
I think one thing that might give the show more appeal is maybe if they had like will ferrell and napoleon dynamite (don't know his real name) come on the show and do something they did in blades of glory I think more people would watch because lots of people like to laugh
Hey Buck up here in Canada we've got 'Battle of the Blades' which pairs lady figure skaters with ex-pro hockey players. The second season just wrapped up so Canadians seem to like it. You could probably still check it out on CBC(dot)ca if you're curious to see what it looks like.
I only watched it for Johnny, and he skated great (I love his poker face performance) but you're right, he shouldn't have held back. Let it rip Johnny, we all know you can!
@Maleficent70 i was having that issue too XD i figured out that you have to go to the artist's website. it lets you download the entire album for free because it's not on itunes.
( On the british version the judges tend to always be completely honest with their scoring and give critique...plus there's a resident 'bitch' on the panel ^_^ )
Also, Vernon Kay, the host, does take a little getting used to. He's such a nice guy though. He's not creepy on TV here aha. And he's from my hometown, Bolton!
We have Dancing on Ice over here in the UK, and it's REALLY popular. It has X Factor's time slot in the new year, so a lot of people watch it. And it's been going for about 6 years now. So clearly us Brits do like skating outside of the olympics, and can make skating work on tv :P

Ok, I knew Laurieann wasn't going to be helpful at all when in her intro she said transitions through the "tricks", and how skating was all about the execution of the arms. haha, bitch it's about a lot more than just arms.
Vernon Kay the presenter of Skating with the Stars is a massive star in the UK. I think that hes just a little nervous and may get better as the series progresses as over here he has several successful shows and is regularly in the tabloids although he has had a bit of controversy which is probably why he is fronting shows in America now.

I didn't watch it, because I figure skate too, and I was worried that if I watched it, they would all become better than I am, and I've been skating for 4 years. And I like Alissa Cziny (I have no idea how to spell her last name), but mostly because I saw her on a show were they recorded her and some other girls on their rise to the Plypics or something. And I also like Ksenia Makarova because she skated at my ice rink before being accepted on the Russian Olympic team.
Vernon Kay is brilliant! He's very well known in the UK too! He probably came off creepy because he's nervous? He was on radio for a long time and presented Family Fortunes! Vernon Kay Number 1
Skating with the Stars has been very successful in a lot of countries actually, but I don't see a future for the US Franchise. Being a new show, they need well known celebrities. I seriously don't know any of the people in this show! Then the blonde chick needs to dumb it down for the tv audience. She sounds so technical/scripted. the judges are parodies of the DWTS judges, it's ridiculous!!

In the UK we have Dancing on Ice, which I love! The judges can get a bit pantoin their roles (e.g. villain etc.) but they do judge, its rare to get a 5 in the first few weeks! The show doesn't take itself too seriously either which is a bit of a blessing too. It helps that I adore Torvill and Dean though. I was quite glad to see some of the pros from DOI on SwtS because at least they have experience teaching celebrities.
I can see why it might be hard to translate to overseas audiences.
Coming from an ex-competitive figure skater, a show like this doesn't seem very marketable. and as you said, the general public only cares about figure skating during the olympics which has some of the best skaters in the world. so why would celebs learning to skate in a few months grab our attention?
Dancing on ice which is the UK version and it's been out for years is still quite popular here so maybe because it works well here they would translate to American tv just as well.
Dancing is all about High School. Everyone remembers how they wanted to be the "best" dancer. When it comes to skating...come on! Unless you grew up in Minnesota, who cares? Besides, what is the purpose? A "career" with some traveling ice skating troupe? Dancing gives "Stars" a chance for redemption or rejuvenation or retirement, right? Love ya Buck! Hey Buck up here in Canada we've got 'Battle of the Blades' which pairs lady figure skaters with ex-pro hockey players. The second season just wrapped up so Canadians seem to like it. You could probably still check it out on CBC(dot)ca if you're curious to see what it looks like.

@Maleficent70 i was having that issue too XD i figured out that you have to go to the artist's website. it lets you download the entire album for free because it's not on itunes.

We have Dancing on Ice over here in the UK, and it's REALLY popular. It has X Factor's time slot in the new year, so a lot of people watch it. And it's been going for about 6 years now. So clearly us Brits do like skating outside of the olympics, and can make skating work on tv :P

Johnny Weir's a judge? I might have to start watching just for him, otherwise, I am NOT interested at all. And I don't want to watch if he's not sassy. :( Hopefully he'll get slightly snarkier, 'cause that's the Johnny I love.

Vernon is famous in the uk - I wondered what he'd been up to!- so maybe he was just nervous for his US big break. Btw it sounds like a copy of the British show Dancing on Ice ( but with rubbish judges and no Torvel & Dean)

Vernon Kay the presenter of Skating with the Stars is a massive star in the UK. I think that hes just a little nervous and may get better as the series progresses as over here he has several successful shows and is regularly in the tabloids although he has had a bit of controversy which is probably why he is fronting shows in America now.

I didn't watch it, because I figure skate too, and I was worried that if I watched it, they would all become better than I am, and I've been skating for 4 years. And I like Alissa Cziny (I have no idea how to spell her last name), but mostly because I saw her on a show were they recorded her and some other girls on their rise to the Plypics or something. And I also like Ksenia Makarova because she skated at my ice rink before being accepted on the Russian Olympic team.

This Skating with the Stars seems to be americas copy on it . .I think some of the professional skaters in this are on Dancing On Ice too !
And the johnny dude seems like a copy on the gay judge jason (btw he is NOT nice :P) in DOI too ! ;)

Skating with the Stars has been very successful in a lot of countries actually, but I don't see a future for the US Franchise. Being a new show, they need well known celebrities. I seriously don't know any of the people in this show! Then the blonde chick needs to dumb it down for the tv audience. She sounds so technical/scripted. the judges are parodies of the DWTS judges, it's ridiculous!!

In the UK we have Dancing on Ice, which I love! The judges can get a bit pantoin their roles (e.g. villain etc.) but they do judge, its rare to get a 5 in the first few weeks! The show doesn't take itself too seriously either which is a bit of a blessing too. It helps that I adore Torvill and Dean though. I was quite glad to see some of the pros from DOI on SwtS because at least they have experience teaching celebrities.
I can see why it might be hard to translate to overseas audiences.

Coming from an ex-competitive figure skater, a show like this doesn't seem very marketable. and as you said, the general public only cares about figure skating during the olympics which has some of the best skaters in the world. so why would celebs learning to skate in a few months grab our attention?

Dancing on ice which is the UK version and it's been out for years is still quite popular here so maybe because it works well here they would translate to American tv just as well.

Dancing is all about High School. Everyone remembers how they wanted to be the "best" dancer. When it comes to skating...come on! Unless you grew up in Minnesota, who cares? Besides, what is the purpose? A "career" with some traveling ice skating troupe? Dancing gives "Stars" a chance for redemption or rejuvenation or retirement, right? Love ya Buck!
