Brigitte is AMAZING but I do not like Gruberova ; she has not the right "feeling" to sing this Role and looks like a "woman" and not like a "young girl" - on the other side Fassbaender is absolutely PERFECT : I love her and wath a sense of the music ! We are lucky Brigitte has done many Moovies !!

This Vienna Opera performance is the best ever. Popp and Fassbaender are such fine actors that you soon believe they are youngsters caught up in this adventure with the wicked witch. Their wonderful singing is matched by Hermann Prey as their father. The staging is magical, too. Georg Solti conducts the opera and the audience is all childlren who watch Hansel and Gretel with expressions of fear and joy that reflect the story being presented in the opera. It all is available on DVD--a must.

Actually, I think the makeup and wardrobe department, coupled with the oversize sets, did an excellent job of making she and Faasbaender look like little kids.

Both perfect for their roles. German repertoire suits Gruberova best.

Well, maybe, but her italian repertoire (belcanto) is nod bad too ...oder?

It's fine but nowhere near the level of her German stuff.Bel canto gives her more freedom and she unfortunately resorts too often to mannerisms that spoil it for me. My favourite Italian Gruberova role is her Giulietta.

I think she is really a bel canto specialist, she uses much legatos, as you say scooping. I think that this "scooping" is really difficult to sing, for exapmle I think Sutherland couldn't do it.. this is just edita's style. take it or leave it.

I like her bel canto roles the most.

I take the roles she does that I like, and leave others. I didn't mention scooping and I didn't mean just that. The fact that it's difficult to scoop doesn't make it correct. Pushing the chest voice (something Gruberova doesn't do) is also difficult and an impressive effect but it's not right if you're singing bel canto.
