To be really honest urm I think her performance was just too technical ._. I mean it's impressive and everything but it lacks a flair that yuna possess, the charisma of the performance and engagement. Mao seemed like she was just keen on showing her skill but I couldn't really feel enjoyment in watching her perform, though it is true her technical stuff were cool.
@christiie You have to look at the small things: how she always points her toes how she flows from one element to another, how every movement she makes seems natural, how she makes eye contact with the audience as she know the whole performance is always for their enjoyment, her amazing smile and then technically brilliant too.

ASada,s 1st axel and her loop were 110 percent in the lp, IMO. Her pole vaulting the flip was a weakness, but the jump was huge.
Perhaps the 2nd axel Was the weakest but the callers still gave credit for it. I totally biased toward Mao; Terence is something about her just can't help but love. Btw, i feel the same way about Yu Na.
No one can take away from Mao what a fierce competitor she was at the Olympics! This sp was stunning, and perhaps her focus was too keen in the lp, knowing that Kim had a great skate right before her lp.
Her first 4 jumping passes in the lp were near perfect, then she had the 2 slight mistakes. Both nights, they sure through down the guantlet at one another.
Sure, there were other competitors but Kim and Asada are in another league.

She's not that good to be honest. Very inconsistent and no flow in her jumps or footwork. I feel that she's very stiff which makes it hard for me to watch. The other Japanese skater Ando Miki is better in my opinion. But Yuna #1!
Shame that Mao is one of the greatest skaters, but she had to deal with more legendary Yuna KIM. Mao was the peak in 2010, would she get a gold in 2014? I doubt it!!!
I think that Mao should have won. I usually don't like her take offs, she slows down to be able to do them, but in here she was clever enough to put something in the middle, and it always looked active, bright and fresh. Kim was absolutely breath taking but I think I was more impressed by what Mao did. Not just the technical stuff, but the overall feelings of her representation. Her expression...marvelous.

If she did a triple triple combo, triple axel, and another triple from a step transision, she could compete against the guys. And if she could do a triple axel combo at the second half of a long program, she could smash all world records on the technical element scores.

Triple axels are fabulous! To see a woman pull it off for the third time in skating history is phenomenal. However, the sport transcends a particular jump or technique. It is blending of artistry and athleticism which seeks to reward well-balanced skaters like Yuna Kim, who does everything so well. She tries very hard and I do admire her for that. But she was dubbed as the best when she was 13 and was thrown into public limelight and fame at a young age, which may have all worked to her disadvantage vis-a-vis Kim Yuna, who only later became a formidable force to be reckoned with. At 13, Mao stopped improving her overall abilities because she honed in only on her triple axels at the cost of critical technical elements.
This was my favorite short program at the olympics. Kim deserved the gold b/c she made no mistakes, but I simply love Mao when she is on. She takes more risks, and is more dramatic.

@jun08548 Actually. She did the most difficult. Figure skating is a sport afterall right? Gymnastics is a respected sport because of how difficult it is. Apparently Figure Skating goes into that kind of category. Jumps, spins, footwork is what makes this a sport.
I think mao did a very great job in this short program , if you compare to the others competitions of that season. She probably deserved a higher score in this short program (around 75-76) , but 73 is very good since her personnal best score was 58...

Her 3A is not fully rotated so many times and she gets full credits for it.Very funny.

She's not that good to be honest. Very inconsistent and no flow in her jumps or footwork. I feel that she's very stiff which makes it hard for me to watch. The other Japanese skater Ando Miki is better in my opinion. But Yuna #1!

Shame that Mao is one of the greatest skaters, but she had to deal with more legendary Yuna KIM. Mao was the peak in 2010, would she get a gold in 2014? I doubt it!!!

I think that Mao should have won. I usually don't like her take offs, she slows down to be able to do them, but in here she was clever enough to put something in the middle, and it always looked active, bright and fresh. Kim was absolutely breath taking but I think I was more impressed by what Mao did. Not just the technical stuff, but the overall feelings of her representation. Her expression...marvelous.

@lurimar17 Since the rules changed last year. She can do a double axel and a triple axel as a required element now. If she did a triple triple combo, triple axel, and another triple from a step transision, she could compete against the guys. And if she could do a triple axel combo at the second half of a long program, she could smash all world records on the technical element scores.

@lurimar17 No, she BARELY eeks out a double toe after her 3a, what makes you think she can do a 3a-3t ? Totally different beast. Men can eek out a 3t or even a 3lo from a complete standstill. Women never (maybe Ito).
And without the spiral requirement in the short, sorry no record. Kim's record will stand.

Mao was soooo underrated for this performance, I can't believe she got 5 points lower than Kim Yuna, this performance was better!! Absolutely flawless!! Mao's best SP ever!!

Triple axels are fabulous! To see a woman pull it off for the third time in skating history is phenomenal. However, the sport transcends a particular jump or technique. It is blending of artistry and athleticism which seeks to reward well-balanced skaters like Yuna Kim, who does everything so well. Her flow, speed, flexibility along with musicality carries her through the entire program while not missing one beat. Yuna is breathtaking. Mao is too slow, awkward and choppy in her presentatio

She tries very hard and I do admire her for that. But she was dubbed as the best when she was 13 and was thrown into public limelight and fame at a young age, which may have all worked to her disadvantage vis-a-vis Kim Yuna, who only later became a formidable force to be reckoned with. At 13, Mao stopped improving her overall abilities because she honed in only on her triple axels at the cost of critical technical elements.

This was my favorite short program at the olympics. Kim deserved the gold b/c she made no mistakes, but I simply love Mao when she is on. She takes more risks, and is more dramatic.

@jun08548 this is about MAO ASADA. what would you know about skating anyways to call mao a "piece of shit", that was amazing and very high leveled performance. someone could go out there with "serenity and flow" and fall out of everything or only land easy jumps. skating is about jumps and spins as much as it is about "serenity and flow" and clearly, Mao has both! if you don't have something nice to say, then don't say anything at all and don't use Mao or any other skater to compliment Yu Na Kim

@jun08548 Actually. She did the most difficult. Figure skating is a sport afterall right? Gymnastics is a respected sport because of how difficult it is. Apparently Figure Skating goes into that kind of category. Jumps, spins, footwork is what makes this a sport.

I think mao did a very great job in this short program , if you compare to the others competitions of that season. She probably deserved a higher score in this short program (around 75-76) , but 73 is very good since her personnal best score was 58...
