lol I'm not an expert when it comes to martial arts, as I've only practiced aikido nishio for about 2 years, but I do find this application of traditional aikido very lacking... there is no control whatsoever over the opponent in the this technique... tori's focusing only on the attacking hand and not the opponent (and I have to say that the attack is lame)... the hakama guy would probably be caught off-guard by any opponent who actually knew what he's doing xD

the way you practice a martial art depends on where you are at. if you are just learning, most likely you will be started off the traditional way, and then once you are better you will practice in real life forms of fights. although i dont agree with starting traditionally, people have to remember that demonstrations usually display what youll start off learning: the traditional way

That's wrong, most people in real fighting situations use both hands not in the same time for pushing or choking but to throw punches from the left and from the right, they don't just use their main hand.

Wow, that actually looked like something meaningful actually happened. This is the first aikido video I have seen like that. Still don't know about the enormous telegraphing movements before the substantial technique, but it looks like you can make the technique work well. Now if I could only find a video of aikido against someone using normal attacks.

But not the same movement. An addition: since it is not a realistic attack, it cannot be said to be a good demonstration of aikido's abilities. Since the attacks are heavily telegraphed, an observer cannot say whether the principle would even work at all.
