As for the puzzler, I'm guessing the Protoss over time, as beings that utilize and literally combine with another of their race and become energy, gained the ability to derive power and energy from the light energies and dark energies that apparently make up the universe or are apart of it or whatever.
I'm guessing that for the fact there is no visible orifice on their bodies to indicate ingestion of any kind.
Zealots are flesh eaters they feast upon the still beating hearts of their prey. That or they use dark energy which is present everywhere in the universe. Special crystals biometrically enhance them allowing them to to focus this energy through the minds eye and use it for different purposes. High Templars have mastered the use of this energy and can manipulate to their will.
Assuming protoss get this energy from pylons, i find it curious that a carrier, a capital ship with at least 20 crewmen, takes only 4X as much food as an ordinary zealot. That raises another question: what do REAVERS eat? They are inorganic, so how do they use psi for energy? How the hell does a reaver actually recieve and act on orders? Is there a little scarab-making midget protoss in there? Cholera puzzler #6?
I would agree with the various psychic absorption theories, where a protoss would take energy from surrounding life forms, except that this theory falls apart when we think about the amount of space travel the protoss do (no life forms to feed off of in space). Also the DTs survived on Shakuris for thousands of years, and that place has no plant life...so we would assume no photosynthesis is possible on said planet.
Biologically, photosynthesis cannot function to provide the energy necessary even for temperature regulation of an inert body. A charging zealot would use up a huge amount of energy. Also the limiting factor in photosynthesis is not the cell function but rather the quantity of rays being directed at the choloplasts. Due to Aiur's similar biosphere to earth (jungle, trees, etc), it seems that Aiur's sun doesn't project many more rays than earth's
I thought that protoss were slow in the olden days, but as they gained new technologies (like the shield) they became a hybrid of artificial and natural systems (ie. cyborgs). It made them think faster, act faster and yes.. run faster. They even evolve during play to run even faster. The extra source of "food" is electricity.
The human body is extremely inefficient, we loose most of our energy to heat. It should be possible for a cold blooded creature to run on solar energy, provided they hibernate to regain energy.

i think the protoss feed on "energy". because they are all connected by the Khala. and i think the khala is not only a way of communication but also a web of energy sources. the crystals mined are made into pylons which are the source of power.
buildings need to be close because they consume so much energy warping units in, but the units can feed off the pylon energy even when they are far away. like instead of having a psi limit, it should be more like a power limit, kinda like in c&c but for everything.
It would make sense that they derive their nutrition from the psionic energy they so cherish. If they are able to telepathicly manipulate psionic energy, it's not much of a stretch that they are powered by that same energy.
Actually, what are the Battlecruisers even doing planetside? They are designed as interstellar capital ships, and doesn't look as they have atmospheric capability (if there aren't any antigrav engines I have missed). The most likely roles are interstellar long-range transport (shuttles are too small to carry necessities for larger forces over long distances), supplies for smaller craft and expeditionary forces, orbital bombardment with nuclear warheads and to combat other space fleets.

This probably makes no scientific sense, but it might also explain why emp shock removes their shields, if the shields were electrically produced. (although then you could argue they'd stop working entirely I guess.) Maybe the shields absorb the emp energy but are destroyed in the process, thus protecting the batteries.
The protein/vitamin part of the equation is a bit more difficult. I'm reaching here, but a very off the wall explanation:

Maybe Protoss control their individual cells via a form of local telepathy too, all they would need to do is disseminate a part of their body in a nutrient-rich environment and absorb the materials directly into their cells. Think ant-colony meets T-1000.

Perhaps the Protoss home planet Auir radiates a special energy that the Protoss absorb and use to move and fight. That would also explain why the pylons are needed to warp in more soldiers if they radiate with a similar energy (which would not be available otherwise on other planets).
Protoss eat by magically consuming Firebathero. They do so much like leaches. By using units such as scouts and pylon hearts they can open up Firebathero's essence and consume it.
I'm sure someone said this, but even if protoss are photosynthetic due to supernatural chlorophyll (or something), they have no way of getting protein, which is a bigger problem.
E.g. Venus Fly traps photosynthesize but have to eat insects to get protein.
The protoss were created by the Xel'Naga; they did not evolve! Also, they could possibly absorb a larger spectrum of light than plants. Plants only are able to absorb a small portion of the spectrum and they are only about 12% efficient. It's possible the Xel'Naga knew of a way to make them more efficient.

photosyntesis makes good sence, thats why protoss vs. protoss you see a huge buildup before each battle, the Zealots need to build up enough energi for their bust.

I Think that protoss eats souls or rather drain lifeenergi from other creaturs. But some protoss like say templars eats or devours pure energi. im going to explain this as good as posible now.. when lets say a Zealot attacks a Marine, zergling or any other living being, he does not only deal physical damage with he´s blades, he also sucks the lifeenergi out of them.
The protoss were DISCOVERED by the Xel'naga, not created. Something about a civil war... the the xelnaga show up and speeds up their evolution... anyway the question at hand... It is very possible that they actually do get energy from photosynthesis, the xelnaga messed with their physiology and made the photosynthesis thing possible...
One point: Protoss, along with the Zerg, were created by the Xel'Naga, remember: they did not evolve. So they are technological creations of a god-like species, they aren't "animals" or "plants" they and the Zerg are closer to sentient robots or biological weapons. Consider that, the technology of the Xel'Naga could have been advanced enough to have photosynthetic efficiency much higher than plants do. It's also possible they have internal nanotechnological fusion reactors.
Ok, so it appears the protoss do not breathe either . . . creating two more questions: 1) even if they do photosynthesize by (magically?) absorbing large quantities of sunlight, how do they get sufficient CO2? One answer could be that the mechanisms by which they get this extra stuff are the same, or alternatively that their atmosphere contains a higher percentage of CO2. 2) is how do they speak? I think telepathy is the answer there, although how they communicate with non-protoss is unknown.

Protoss living units (zealots, hts, dts) are actually REALLY REALLY light weight. They are made of gas and does not require a lot of energy to move. Which explains why they go up in a puff of smoke when they die. In fact, hts are so light they FLOAT!

Well you see in Auir there are lot's of lush forests and jungles everywhere, back in the old days Tree's were actually huge organism's that blocked all the sunlight and there were actually only a few spots that had tree's that were climbable. So in order to get to these small spots and climb those tree's you will need to be fit and agile. After a while after the protoss found the crystals, they didn't need to climb tree's anymore and the tree's didn't need to compete and so they shrank.
in the US Navy command ships, battleships and aircraft carriers, have the most firepower not the least. That would be stupid, to have the least firepower.
They used to have mouthes millions of years ago, but because of their advanced technology they found a way to regenerate instead of eating which takes less time and effort. Because of that regeneration process they have more energy then usual lifeforms so in time, do to evolution, they developed psionic powers and used telepathy instead of speaking. In time do to evolution again, their mouths became smaller and eventually dissapeared.

Perhaps they have had telepathy and psy powers for a long time. Considering that a trained mind can create storms capable of disolving matter. Perhaps they have found a way to convert matter into energy WITH THEIR MINDS and that's why they have pylons with crystals. They harvest that tightly packed material into energy and thus powering their bodies.

do they get warped in from auir(why would you have to build warp in gates on the auir campaign map)? and even if they do doesnt stop my idea because the protoss could have defected from the xel naga and created a colony on auir yet still have to use the warp technology to get reborn

Really, SCIENCE is the only answer. Since the Xel'naga made them, the lore writers can BS in any explanation they want. It's also possible that they can absorb the ambient energy in the universe. Zeratul mentions the Void often and Dark Templar gain their psionic powers from it. Perhaps all Protoss can absorb energy from it unconsciously, without even them knowing it.
Damn straight, plants don't need to move fast (or at all) because sunlight comes to them, they don't need to go out and hunt it or find it or anything. Plants are best off just sitting around and growing or spreading. Protoss are clearly more like hunters than plants.

I think that the protoss eat by telekenetic absorption. They break the food into microscopic proportions, and absorb it through diffusion, which the protoss armor lets through (like a cell membrane in a way). They can just kill and break apart any creatures or normal food into microscopic proportions and absorb them.
my theory is that human-like protoss like the zealot and the templar absorb their food. dragoons on the other hand r merely machines in which zealots and templar use in combat as the game states in the brood war protoss campaign. also as to wat the protoss eat i beleive they use electricity as a fuel source.
The Protoss, the beings of high technology that they are, have created very efficient crystal reactors that they use for energy. When a Protoss is "hungry", he plugs in to a power supply for quick and long-lasting energy. The Xel Naga may have created them with mouths, but they have since evolved to not have mouths since they no longer needed them for feeding or communication(telepathy).
even aside from the issues of speed and strength, the amazing brains that the Protoss harbor have to take a huge amount of energy to operate properly; as for a solution, I would say the most likely answer hinges upon the Protoss' technological prowess; they may have a machine that behaves similarly to the Shield Battery, only it recharges biological systems rather than mechanical ones, providing them with the energy normally obtained through food consumption
lol interesting puzzle. My take will be unlike humans, zealots has extra sense that enables them to access the psi-energy which is why their food supply is pylons. The pylons is like storage of psi-energy that the units consume. Templars are those who can turn the pure consumable energy into devastating weapon.

hey cholera, i got one of those puzzle things, lets just say u built a vulture without upgrade 1ST and THEN u build a machine shop and upgrade it and everything and how does the vulture get all the upgrades like making the vult faster, and getting mines. how do they do that? like how can they get mines and speed when they were built be4 the upgrades came?
vulture is actually a squadron, maps are actually huge, and battles last more than 20 minutes (few days or months maybe). There are logistics and such things, we just don't get to see them.
As they became an advanced race they probably developed some armour system that can supply their skin with deuterium and tritium enriched water continously.
Only downside with this theory is that in no protoss lifeforms would need to hunt for energy and their planet would not porduce any carnivores. Maby they turned evil killing machines by some misshap when protoss scientist where playing around with genetic improvments to their DNA.

I think protoss can feed off of psionic energy. In the same way plants are photosynthetic, protoss can meditate and absorb energy form the world around them with their psionic powers.
If you want to go on the concept of evolution, then they evolved not to have mouths as their psionic powers let them eat. If created by the Zel'Naga, then they were made to absorb the energy as a way to try and add to their perfect physical form.
I think protoss units do photosynthesise but unlike plants, they utilise all spectrums of light as we know it as well as "unknown high energy waves" that are yet to be discovered by humans. This way they can extract large amounts of energy from stars without needing large surface areas. Also the wrinkles on the skin of protoss units act as anti reflection coating as they reflect light onto other areas of their skin instead of away from the body (as plant leaves do). This increases efficiency.

The protoss were created by the Xel'Naga; they did not evolve! Also, they could possibly absorb a larger spectrum of light than plants. Plants only are able to absorb a small portion of the spectrum and they are only about 12% efficient. It's possible the Xel'Naga knew of a way to make them more efficient.

1) Mouths had become a hindrance to survivability.

The protoss have a jaw, which makes little sense unless they at one point in evolution actually did have a mouth. Their eyes are set in a forward depth-perception fashion which indicates the protoss were during early evolution predators or at least omnivores. Logically the Protoss used to eat, and at least at times they ate other creatures.

Well the protoss were primatif apes intill the Xel naga started to force evelution. They were telepatic by nature but Zel naga enhanced it. So they dont need to talk. They also dont eat cus , they draw in energy from minerla fields tru there skin and absorb it. They only need enery like a battery. Because there psycic power is hug they use it as "muscles" without real muscles needed.The vespene gas is only for suits buildings, and robots.

photosyntesis makes good sence, thats why protoss vs. protoss you see a huge buildup before each battle, the Zealots need to build up enough energi for their bust.

But some protoss like say templars eats or devours pure energi. im going to explain this as good as posible now.. when lets say a Zealot attacks a Marine, zergling or any other living being, he does not only deal physical damage with he´s blades, he also sucks the lifeenergi out of them.

It is very possible that they actually do get energy from photosynthesis, the xelnaga messed with their physiology and made the photosynthesis thing possible...

One point: Protoss, along with the Zerg, were created by the Xel'Naga, remember: they did not evolve. So they are technological creations of a god-like species, they aren't "animals" or "plants" they and the Zerg are closer to sentient robots or biological weapons. Consider that, the technology of the Xel'Naga could have been advanced enough to have photosynthetic efficiency much higher than plants do. It's also possible they have internal nanotechnological fusion reactors.

Ok, so it appears the protoss do not breathe either . . . creating two more questions: 1) even if they do photosynthesize by (magically?) absorbing large quantities of sunlight, how do they get sufficient CO2? One answer could be that the mechanisms by which they get this extra stuff are the same, or alternatively that their atmosphere contains a higher percentage of CO2. 2) is how do they speak? I think telepathy is the answer there, although how they communicate with non-protoss is unknown.

The protoss don't need crazy surface area, they have technology, they could have solar panals on their armor that take in sunlight amplify it and redirect it to the protoss's skin.
The fast moving zealot has machinery that helps the zealot move fast, there is probably very little the zealot has to do himself.
The protoss could have sunlight transformed into liquid form and injected right into their skin, it doesn't quite matter how they do it

yeah, that makes sense. they probably have some device that monitors their body's levels of blood sugar, temprature, hemocyaninic bloodcell count, hormone, serotonine, adrebaline... etc. etc.. and this device (intergrated in the suit) always makes sure to inject fluids to optimize the health and performance the units in question. or maybe they have some biological battery and survives by magnetic induction.

Protoss living units (zealots, hts, dts) are actually REALLY REALLY light weight. They are made of gas and does not require a lot of energy to move. Which explains why they go up in a puff of smoke when they die. In fact, hts are so light they FLOAT!

protoss are simply born with all of the energy they need to live their life. Some animals such as butterflies do not eat at all or do not have to eat once they become adults.
Or protoss have only one body orifice in which case they both eat and shat out their ass. Again there are many animals, especially in the ocean that have only one body orifice.

Well you see in Auir there are lot's of lush forests and jungles everywhere, back in the old days Tree's were actually huge organism's that blocked all the sunlight and there were actually only a few spots that had tree's that were climbable. So in order to get to these small spots and climb those tree's you will need to be fit and agile. After a while after the protoss found the crystals, they didn't need to climb tree's anymore and the tree's didn't need to compete and so they shrank.

They used to have mouthes millions of years ago, but because of their advanced technology they found a way to regenerate instead of eating which takes less time and effort. Because of that regeneration process they have more energy then usual lifeforms so in time, do to evolution, they developed psionic powers and used telepathy instead of speaking. In time do to evolution again, their mouths became smaller and eventually dissapeared.

Perhaps they have had telepathy and psy powers for a long time. Considering that a trained mind can create storms capable of disolving matter. Perhaps they have found a way to convert matter into energy WITH THEIR MINDS and that's why they have pylons with crystals. They harvest that tightly packed material into energy and thus powering their bodies.

simple right protoss dont eat because all of there units are warped in right well they are just brought back from the dead the protoss is just a dead army meaning they dont have to eat and the xel naga created the probe to be able to build in the warp and the buildings. every unit not warped in is fully mechanical (reaver, shuttle) and the xel naga first made sure they got the leaders back from the dead.... very weird idea

Really, SCIENCE is the only answer. Since the Xel'naga made them, the lore writers can BS in any explanation they want. It's also possible that they can absorb the ambient energy in the universe. Zeratul mentions the Void often and Dark Templar gain their psionic powers from it. Perhaps all Protoss can absorb energy from it unconsciously, without even them knowing it.

I think there are two answers here:
1) Only Reach's units don't need to eat, because they're just that manly. The rest have to go to the food court in the Nexus.
2) The Kahla (or the Void, in the case of the Dark Templar) is their strength. They have no need for food.

Damn straight, plants don't need to move fast (or at all) because sunlight comes to them, they don't need to go out and hunt it or find it or anything. Plants are best off just sitting around and growing or spreading. Protoss are clearly more like hunters than plants.

I think that the protoss eat by telekenetic absorption. They break the food into microscopic proportions, and absorb it through diffusion, which the protoss armor lets through (like a cell membrane in a way). They can just kill and break apart any creatures or normal food into microscopic proportions and absorb them.

The Protoss, the beings of high technology that they are, have created very efficient crystal reactors that they use for energy. When a Protoss is "hungry", he plugs in to a power supply for quick and long-lasting energy. The Xel Naga may have created them with mouths, but they have since evolved to not have mouths since they no longer needed them for feeding or communication(telepathy).

even aside from the issues of speed and strength, the amazing brains that the Protoss harbor have to take a huge amount of energy to operate properly; as for a solution, I would say the most likely answer hinges upon the Protoss' technological prowess; they may have a machine that behaves similarly to the Shield Battery, only it recharges biological systems rather than mechanical ones, providing them with the energy normally obtained through food consumption

The pylons is like storage of psi-energy that the units consume. Templars are those who can turn the pure consumable energy into devastating weapon.

protoss get their nutrition from their body suits, they do not have their body suits on when they are on their homeworld, but once they get warped in to fight, they put on body suits which give them all the sustenance they need for the battle ahead. that's what the blue "blood" is, kinda like matrix style

Only downside with this theory is that in no protoss lifeforms would need to hunt for energy and their planet would not porduce any carnivores. Maby they turned evil killing machines by some misshap when protoss scientist where playing around with genetic improvments to their DNA.

In the world of protoss the evolution solved room temperature biodynamic fusion!
So protoss lifeforms absorb ocean water thru their skin and their cells can fuse deuterium and tritium isotopes to create enormous amounts of energy.
10 gram deterium and 15 gram tritium can supply all the energy one human would use during a lifetime(for real).
So early protoss lifeforms didn't have to eat or drink they just needed to swim in ocean water.

I think protoss units do photosynthesise but unlike plants, they utilise all spectrums of light as we know it as well as "unknown high energy waves" that are yet to be discovered by humans. This way they can extract large amounts of energy from stars without needing large surface areas. Also the wrinkles on the skin of protoss units act as anti reflection coating as they reflect light onto other areas of their skin instead of away from the body (as plant leaves do). This increases efficiency.
