For the record, after World War Two the Republic adopted only the third verse as its anthem because the original was an early-19 Century poem to the German-speaking world, which describes the non-existent "Deutschland" as stretching from Copenhagen to Venice and Brussels to Gdansk. The second verse refers quite lavishly to wine, women, and song, which was not considered serious enough. Personally, I think wine, women, and song are the only valid national aspirations.

I believe Handel wrote the music for this tune when he was lived in England and served HM King George I. I was in the Church of England song book. A visiting German head of state liked and it became the tune, eventually, for the anthem of Germany.

Maybe besides stupid English ppl who jacked their current anthem from our Kaiserreich. But that's OK you can have it if you can't come up with something on YOUR OWN. We opted for even better.

@MarcelSiga Hallo, da dies die dritte Strophe des Liedes der Deutschen (so die offizielle Bezeichnung) ist, ist dies auch das "Deutschlandlied". Die erste Strophe haben die Verbrecher des "Dritten Reiches" mißbraucht, die zweite paßt besser in eine Kneipe, aber die dritte gibt unser nationales Wesen wieder. Wir sind zwar wieder vereint, aber dieses Lied sollte uns weiter Mahnung sein, in Zukunft zusammenzustehen und uns als eine normale Nation zu sehen, nicht besser und schlechter als andere.

As a Canadian it is nice to see the CDN flag on our NATO soldiers - and at the same time to hear the German anthem. We are allies. We are friends. WWII is over and we have no time to remember grief, but only time to heal a world that needs our efforts to bring it peace and understanding. Long live the great German people. Since WW2, we have been friends through NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation). But it is a rule (or triditional) that if a VIP from another country is in your country (like Presedent), then when their anthem is played, your countries soldiers have to salute to their anthem aswell as yours.

Warum nicht? Ohne jetzt überheblich sein zu wollen - unsere Hymne ist so mitunter die einzige auf der Welt, die man a) wirklich schön (da wirklich eine Meldodie und kein dumpfer Marsch) und b) guten Gewissens singen kann (weil sie nicht so brutal und martialisch ist, wie viele andere Hymnen). Man legt so 'ner hübschen, galanten Sängerin nicht einfach die Marseillaise in den Mund. Zumindest würde ich das nicht tun.

England and Germany have historical ties that go back centuries. Too bad that the first verse (since WW2)is often omitted. "Deutschland uber alles" (Germany above all) doesn't mean "Germany ruling over all". It means "Germany first in our hearts" or words to that effect. One of the most beautiful national anthems around. Tune by Haydn, originally the Austrian national anthem.

Austria was a state with many peoples. There were the Czech people, the Slovakian people, some Italians and the German people (living from Salzburg to Vienna). They ALL were Austrians but also Czechs, Slovakians and Germans. In 1918, Austria disappeared. The German part became an own state called "German-Austria". But since this name was forbidden by the Alliies, the state had to rename itself to "Austria".

So, the state which is now called Austria is only the German part of the old Austria.
