Met Bob Carlisle in person (prior to his Smash hit) and told him "I saw ya in "Crying in the Chapel", and he smiled and said: yup, that's me. Cool guy and great remake of the Elvis classic.
I love this song. I love this version of the song. I love Allies and Bob Carlisle. And, I love that this video was taken from Fire By Nite. Any video from Fire By Nite is a wonderful addition. :)
Great old Elvis song sung so well by this totally underrated group. Love the harmony and the chord progressions that they spruced up this old song with. Thanks for posting this! :)
Bob Carlisle has to be one of the greatest ever voices in Christian music! (For me it's a toss-up between him, Russ Taff, Matthew Ward, and Tommy Funderburk.)
Was that a fake tan he was sporting in the interview segment?!?
Actually your right and wrong. The video info is wrong. Also the original was not the Orioles. The Orioles covered Darrell Glenn's country song "Crying In the Chapel". Darrell originally recorded it but the Orioles made it a huge pop hit in 1953 then Elvis later. Not so much a hit for the Allies due to the limited nature of Christian Music influence back in 1980's.
OK slight correction I meant to say the original hit version was by the Orioles in 1953. Darrell Glenn did write and record "Crying in the Chapel" but he was a teenager, and although I listened to pop, R&B and country music intently in 1953, he got no air play and I still have never heard his version. Can anyone post it?
@eden512 And Darrell Glenn's band that he was with and that, I believe, was on the label was the Rhythm Riders. It was written by Darrell's father Artie Glenn after Artie accepted the Lord.
Thanks for you comment. Is you dad still playing drums now? The Allies made some great music, unfortunately i never was able to see them live. I did hear great things about thier live shows in the 80's.
yea.. he still plays but not professionally at the moment...right now me and him are playing n our praise and worship band at our church(I play guitar).....again thanks for the upload!...
@74magic92 He was a great drummer. One of the best in Christian music and probably up there in the mainstream genres as well. I was at Jesus Northwest in 1990 and they were there. I didn't really listen to them as I was looking for friends. But, I stopped when heard the drum solo and had to just sit down and watch.
I got the lyrics back than though I to would say everyone didn't. I remember my boyfriend (1965) asking me to dance to it. While we were dancing to it I asked him if we should be dancing to this song.
Thanks for posting this, Good ol Allies and Bob Carlisle, what a voice. Its amazing some of the great bands and voices that worked together. SCB/Bryan Duncan/Allies/Bob. You will find Bob on Bryan D recordings together (bee gees) and vice versa.
Love this song. thanks for posting :)

It was originally recorded by The Orioles (1953), 7 years before Elvis recorded his version.

Shucks!!! I did not know that Bob CArlisle used to be the lead singer of Allies. No wonder the song Butterfly Kisses sounds like him.

A man may go to heaven......
without health, without wealth;
without fame, without a great name;
without learning, without earnings;
without culture, without beauty;
without friends and without ten thousand other things-----
But he can NEVER go to Heaven without My Lord Jesus Christ!!

Allies had some really good songs, too bad they didn't seem to really get the credit for it and make it "big"

This history is wrong, the original version was by the Orioles in 1953, but the voice is great, not Elvis, but with soul and meaning.
