If the player, having the move, has less than two minutes left on his clock, he may claim a draw before his flag falls. He shall summon the arbiter and may stop the clocks. (See Article 6.12.b)
a. If the arbiter agrees the opponent is making no effort to win the game by normal means, or that it is not possible to win by normal means, then he shall declare the game drawn. Otherwise he shall postpone his decision or reject the claim.
Article 6.9 Except where one of the Articles: 5.1.a, 5.1.b, 5.2.a, 5.2.b, 5.2.c applies, if a player does not complete the prescribed number of moves in the allotted time, the game is lost by the player. However, the game is drawn, if the position is such that the opponent cannot checkmate the player’s king by any possible series of legal moves.
Wow, the arbiter in the grey suit has it all wrong, surely; black is out of time and there is a POSSIBLE mate in the material on the board. Note possible, however unlikely. He says it's a draw because a FORCED mate is impossible, but not only could that point be argued eternally from any chess position, but what about a series of blunders from black leading to the mate? White wins, clearly!
But her opponent could have stopped the clock and claimed a draw? Weird. Silly, too. I guess that is what she should have done. I hope she wises up. I mean, this is chess and only a few of us know the rules, evidently.
amazing! finally sochko -the blonde one- won the armageddon game, after she paid some hundreds of dollars for a judge revision. the judge talking on 5:20 didn't know the rule!! sochko won because, when her opponent ran out of time, is possible to get a mate with the pieces on the board. doesn't matter if it would be a silly mate!
If she stops the clock she can claim a draw. Once the flag falls its a loss.

There are rules to sudden death and nobody seems to know them including the bias judges.
