Georgia Tech has never finished #1 in the AP Poll since it's inception in 1936, and the last time Tech played in a MAJOR bowl game was the 1956 Sugar Bowl. Please explain how - in spite these two facts - Georgia Tech won a NC in 90. Keep clinging to this falsehood and cursing the "5th down" Colorado refs.
The ACC sent 6 teams to Bowls that year the record was 4-1-1. Clemson beat Illinois (who I think tied Colorado) 30-0. and they finished ranked #9 in the final poll. Clemson only lost to GA Tech and UVA that year. Giving Colorado a share of the Nat'l Championship that year was a true disgrace to athletics, sportsmanship and fairness.
I think that, if Penn St. would have won one of their first two games that year, they would have possibly played Tech in the Citrus bowl that year for at least a share of the title. That would have been interesting.
colorado went into 91 orange bowl #1, in both polls they beat notre dame, and slipped to #2 in the UPI poll. g tech beats a bad nebraska team in the citrus bowl and moves up to #1. something fishy was going on
CU got 5 plays to score that touchdown with noe penalty or first down. GT was the better team. Didn't Nebraska also win a championship soon after this?
LOL...and Colorado didn't even score on the 5th down. Plus, they got a bogus block in the back on Rocket Ismail's punt return in that Orange Bowl to 'win' 10-9. Colorado LOST in 1990...Georgia Tech didn't. Hell, Georgia Tech beat the #1 team in the country IN THEIR BACKYARD (Virginia with Herman Moore)...yet somehow Colorado was #1. The ridiculous politics of college football at the Division 1A level. Here's a thought: settle it on the field
i would not even think of considering that a shared national championship considering it was the year of the 5th down. if that was this day in age we would have the title. who cares we still go down as national champions
Tech really had it going there under Bobby Ross. Recruiting and prestige picked up after that national championship season. I firmly believe that if Ross had stayed, along with Friedgen and O'Leary, GT would have been a top 10 program over the course of the 90s. Unfortunately, he did not feel he had the full support of the Tech administration, which was a major reason he left to coach San Diego.
Georgia Tech should had that national championship all to itself. Colorado got lucky that they won on fifth down against Missouri and that they lucked out in the Orange Bowl on that Ismail clipping penalty 10-9. Tech had a better record, they didn't lose only tied while Colorado had one loss.
Don't forget about those breaks that CU got. The fifth down, the clipping penalty against the Notre Dame. Without that penalty CU would have lost and yes it was a clip, but you know without it they would have lost. Also, don't forget CU lost a game, Georgia Tech didn't. Yes, they did tied but GT didn't loss and those dumbass voters should have taken that into consideration. Yes, they may have played an easy schedule but they won all their games except that one tie, CU didn't.
Bobby Ross' coaching job throughout this season may have been the best ever in College Football. If you think about it, Georgia Tech was good, but they were not THAT great. Along the way, Georgia Tech beat an awesome UVA team and a great Nebraska team in their bowl game. Boy, that UVA, IMHO, was the best game in ACC history! If Bobby had stayed at Tech for a much longer time, he would have made the College Football Hall Of Fame! Anyone agree with me?

You don't win a NC by playing in the Citrus Bowl.

Another thing that should be noted that not one team ended ranked on GT's schedule.

Let's see. GT had a tie. Okay, not perfect, but fine.
But in the meantime... CU lost a game, tied a game, won on a 5th down, and won on a bullshit phantom clip against Notre Dame.
GT: lone national champs of 1990.

Who was the QB of GT at that time? I was born that year, so I wouldn't remember from a personal experience or anything.

The QB was Sean Jones.

Georgia Tech also had a much easier schedule than Colorado.

2 good teams (one in a bowl), heck of an easy schedule.
