I hear people saying there are gross inaccuracies with this movie, in spite of the remarkable storytelling.

Here's a suggestion - it's not meant to be. It is meant to tell the story through the lens of our audience. That is why medieval style music (albeit not thoroughly accurate) and dance is wittily integrated into a classic David Bowie song and more conventional dance.
