  • He probably just got the teams mixed up for a tenth of a second. The ball got tipped, the kid caught it, and momentarily the thought went through the refs mind "Holy shit it's a TD." While he started to blow the whistle, he realized his mistake, tossed the bag and waved off the play. Most of the time, when anyone makes a mistake, we know it before anyone else. No biggie, really. If that kid would have run it out, his coach would have said "Nice play. What were you thinking?"

  • this proves that the players in your league suck

  • According to the NFHS Section 3-5 ART. 4 . . . The clock shall be stopped when: a. The down ends following a foul. b. An official’s time-out is taken. c. A charged or TV/radio time-out is granted. d. The period ends. e. The ball is out of bounds. f. A legal or illegal forward pass is incomplete. g. A score or touchback occurs. h. A fair catch is made. i. An inadvertent whistle is sounded. So the official made the correct call the ball was dead. It's better to make a late call than a wrong one.
  • An interception is still a live ball. This is an inadvertent whistle. You can tell the official screwed up, look at his body language. The only time the ball is dead in the endzone is when its a kick, either free kick or scrimmage kick.

  • @cougar729 Correct me if I am wrong, but you cannot even return a kick from the endzone. Or so I thought.

I have been photographing HS football for two years and have yet to see a kickoff reach the endzone, but I did find out this year that the opposing team has the option of having a team re-kick if they kickoff out of bounds.

  • "YEAH...TOUCHDOWN BABY!!" Uhhh what?? hahah

  • if its intercepted in the end zone in a high school ball game its a touchback. C'mon RSSisWAR know your stuff

  • same thing happened to me lol. except he didnt call until i was already on the other side out of breathe lol

  • So if it was or it wasn't the correct decision . . . he blew his whistle either way. The touchback isnt going to hurt them.

  • How is this a bad call? INT in end zone, dead ball, end of story.

Now I would say, rather, BAD RULE!

Just like only having WRs be able to keep one foot in for receptions in college football (and then when they get to the professional level they need both).

  • Get your facts right. It's a dead ball.

  • live ball on interception, dead ball on kick in the end zone. wake up idiots

  • uhmmmm someone yelled "ya touchdown baby"

  • different states have different rules for high school football

  • Comment removed

  • you're dumb

  • Wouldn't call that the worst call ever though

  • Why are you playing football if you clearly dont understand it

  • This was obviously a bench player who doesnt know the game

  • they dont have overtime in high school football. i play football in high school.

  • @MrDwc321 it depends on the state you're in

  • haha u hear some one say "touchdown!"

  • High School Football Federations rules you cannot take a intercepted football out of the endzone. Only in NCAA rules, which are only played by in Texas and Massachusetts.

  • @uhohpp Show me the page that is oon in the NF rules book. I hope you have a while to look, because ou are not goign to find it because it does not exist. KICKS can NOT be ruturned out of the end zone. Interceptions may be returned. HS referee for 10+ years.

  • @uhohpp Exception is overtime - then ANY interception is a dead ball.

  • @ILOVEUMPS You know exactly what your talking about.

  • you guys are stupid, no matter if its a kick, a punt, a field goal, or interception, or a fumble, you cant take the ball out of the endzone in high school, it's a touchback... i dont get the problem

  • @rt9483 KICKS can NOT be ruturned out of the end zone. Interceptions may be returned. HS referee for 10+ years. Now who is stupid?

  • This may have been the right call. If this was in overtime in a High School game it is the correct call. Any turnover in an overtime is immediately blown dead. That is the rule.

  • there is no way in hell thats a rule in high school.... and if it is! then that rule needs to be changed cuz its bs. what would be the reason for the rule anyway? too dangerous to return an interception? give me a break let them play the fucking game!

  • the worst call in history was is one of my games. the guy in front of me grabbed my jersey, my facemask, and twisted my around, and threw me on the ground... the ref was less that 5 feet away... refs suck ( i giess its the worst foul that WASN'T called...)

  • .....

  • Just a brain fart. I have done it before

  • There are a handful of high school rules that vary from state to state. This is not one of them. This is not a touchback in every state. Scheez what goofiness you read on these boards. The official had a brain fart and, by looking at his body language , he knew he'd messed up right away. Nobody on the field felt worse than he did at the time. Inadvertent whistle. Blue ball at the 20. Life moves on.

  • that was the right call. In high school, if u intercept it in the end zone, it's a dead ball

  • Under NFHS Rules, free kicks and scrimmage kicks entering the opponent's (receiving team) endzone are touchbacks. This is an inadvertent whistle by the covering official. By rule, it will be blue's ball at the 20 since it happened after the turnover. You are one of two types of officials: 1) you've blown a call or 2) you're going to blow a call! It's human to error. Just own your mistakes. Bean bag was not necessary. Time to get ready to depart for my game tonight. Have fun!

  • "Football official of 16 yrs": The interception is returnable. If he decides not to come out, it is a touchback. The official that blew the inadvertent whistle must be inexperienced. This is obvious based on the unnecessary bean bag that was tossed. All this being said, it probably had no effect on the outcome. Mistakes are made by players, coaches, and officials. They are not robots whether it is at the HS level or the NFL. Give the guy a break.

  • redsphan514 is right... it's a rule in most high school leagues for that to be a touchback. Learn the rules.

    UNLESS...

... it is written in your specific HS league's rule book that an interception is returnable from the endzone. There are plenty of officials who don't know the rules, not to mention the differences in rules between pee-wee, JV, varsity, and college.

  • The laces were in!!! They were IN!!!!

  • bad call

  • Comment removed

  • its not a dead ball when intercepted in the end zone, but it is a dead ball when the whistle blows, its called an inadvertent whistle and the team in possession at the time of the whistle gets a choice of a do-over and the result of the play at the time of the whistle, thus a touch back.

  • people make mistakes he knew it get on with your life u probly wouldnt have gotten to the 20 yard line anyway

  • That ref is a dumbass. The safety should have ignored him and kept going. The white hate might have let the return count.

  • Guy at the end. "Yeaah, touchdown baby!"

  • @CleverNameHere1000 heard that and cracked up

  • stupid rules

  • the foot ball just brushed up agenst that guy's fingers then into the blue jersy's hands....in my opinion you had gotten refs that were bribed by the other team....

  • 2009 NFHS Football Rules Book, rule 8 section 5 article 3 describes "It is a touchback when... " (8-5-3-d): "A forward pass is intercepted in B's end zone and becomes dead there in B's possession." The AND is important - it's not dead until he runs it out.

A free kick touchback, (8-5-3-a-1) only requires the ball break the goal line plane to be whistled immediate touchback.

He got confused and blew the whistle (unless, as others said, there was some state-specific overtime procedure at work.)

  • @CoachJimAdam - sorry - meant to say, not dead until he's tackled.

  • @CoachJimAdam Correct, except the ball is NOT dead when he runs it out... if fact it is LIVE all the way until the ball is dead by rule... in possession with the runner down, OOB, or when a loose ball goes OOB. Except for OT (where the ball is immediately dead), a forward pass intercepted in the endzone is LIVE. But the body language of the flank official tells me he screwed up, because he sure did not look very convincing with the call... he was out of position and his signal was weak.

  • @gbounit Yes, I'd corrected my comment to say "not dead until he's tackled." Which he wasn't, you're right. Obviously the rule just means that if he intercepts, tries to run it out, & gets tackled in the end zone, then touchback.

Felt sorry for ref - saw the same body language as you. He blew it and knew it. Not sure it's 'worst call ever' - guess it becomes an inadvertent whistle & they get it on the 20. Coach might even have been happy depending on situation. Kid will be upset forever though.

  • when i first started officiating games i got confused about the different positions and names of those different officials. I played football and didnt even know them thats alright honest mistake on your part. I get the same questions when I tell them what position i officiate in a game

  • whiteshaq . um how can i say this. google or look up on a search engine umpire in football. It will give you the information. There is an umpire in football they are located in the defensive backfield either just behind the linebackers or just in front of them it depends. There is also a referee which is the crew chief positioned in the back of the offense on the throwing side of the quarterback.

  • i agree with umpire i am an unpire on my crew. If it was a playoff i could see the call. There is also the human factor he may have had a brain farct it happens i wouldnt hammer the guys innocent call there is going to always be inadvertant wistles he wasnt the first ref and wouldnt be the last

  • @ranger082469 ahahahha funny man.. if you were so legit you would know an UMPIRE is in baseball numbnuts... referee is football

  • @whiteshaq52 : Hey Whiteshaq here is a news flash for you my friend, Ranger IS RIGHT, AND YOU ARE WRONG AS A THREE DOLLAR BILL. There really is such a position in football that is correctly known as the Umpire, furthermore this also applies to the sport of tennis as well,

  • high school rules genius. interception, kickoffs, any thing that goes into the end zone is a touchback. the ref was correct in every way.

  • i would think pass interference? but i dont know anything about football i play baseball and wrestle.

  • In this situation other than overtime a inadvertant whistle procedure should have followed this. Clearly the line judge was in error but that happens, people just need to remember even though we are officials we are still human and we do make mistakes just hopefully not a lot of them.

  • avalos54 = BOOST

  • I remember that. Biggest fucking bullshit. Loss in over time. One of the best games we played. Except Dean tech that was the Greatest day of my life.

  • depends on what state its in, different states have different rules

  • thats the right call. in high school if its intercepted in the end zone its a dead ball, touchback. know your game

  • not in NY it's not

  • iwe intercepted the ball in our league and we ran it to the 45 yard line. it isnt a dead ball in the end zone.

  • No, an interception in the end zone is live. Punts and kicks in the end zone are dead. It's an inadvertant whistle.

  • @redsphan514 No it isn't. Good try though. Perhaps you should "know your game"

  • It is only the right call in some states genius. It depends on what rules the state high school sports association is using. If this was NCAA rules (played in Texas) this was the wrong call. It is a live ball and he can run it out of the end zone. Some USA Football and Federation rules say you can't advance a turnover out of the end zone. Just like they have offsides even if a def player enters the neutral zone (it doesn't matter if the ball is snapped or not) in Texas he can get back.

  • @redsphan514 Your right

  • @redsphan514 thank you

  • @redsphan514 WRONG! You need to reread the rulebook. Unless it was OT, that ball is LIVE until the runner is down by rule.

  • @redsphan514 nice call

  • @redsphan514 According the NHSF rule book, the ball should have been returned. The referee blew an inadvertent whistle. Watch it again, he realized he screwed up. But it's gonna be blue ball on the 20.

  • @redsphan514

High school rules differ from state to state, Broseph.

  • @redsphan514 YOU are WRONG!!! ONLY on free kicks is that the case!!! go back to football rules 101!!!

  • @redsphan514 uhhh no, the ball is dead in the endzone only if it's a scrimmage kick. Know your game.

  • @redsphan514

WRONG. I have the rule book and have studied the high school game and it's rules, for 40 years. Previous posters are correct: kicks into the endzone are touchbacks. Turnovers in the end zone are returnable. If the player doesn't get out of the end zone, even if he tries to, it's a touchback. However, turnovers in the end zone are not automatically dead balls.... not in any state following the national high school rule book.

  • @TomKaren1994

This was the right call. It happened in overtime. That's why he blew it dead. Any turnover in overtime is blown dead.

  • thats only a touch-back if the player is down by contact or as fallen sooo knees elbow or hip as touched the ground in the end zone and no the refs did make a bad whistle call because the ball was still in play and the player had the opportunistic to return the ball out of the endzone

  • @redsphan514

You are incorrect about that rule. It's absolutely wrong.

  • @redsphan514 WRONG! You need to go learn the game! KICKS that go into the end zone are dead when they cross the goal line. Passes that are intercepted in the end zone are LIVE BALLS unless the person intercepting the ball goes down or out of bounds. HS Referee for over 10 years....

  • @redsphan514 Ummm, no. The ball is still live and can be run out of the end zone.

  • @redsphan514 your wrong it was a live ball.

  • @redsphan514 FALSE!

  • @redsphan514 You're an idiot. That has never been a dead ball... NFHS, NCAA, OR NFL! He blew the call.

  • wtf thts probably the worst call ive ever seen

  • @avalos54 No you are not a high school coach, because if you were you would type correctly.

  • i was writing a response to a video on youtube , not writing a letter to an english professor. i coach freshmen football this is my second season coaching shall i send you my resume ?

  • if youre a freshman football coach why are u commenting on stupid ass videos on youtube?

  • because its the off season ?

  • yeah its cause in high school, its a touchback automatically

  • not only one of the worst calls but did the guy in the back round say touch down?? ya when the defense cathes the ball its called a interception =]

  • hmm i didnt seem to see the ball hit the ground

  • I've had worse. One time I got called on holding even though I wasn't even on the field. Seriously. The coach tried to call him on it, but the ref wouldn't listen.

It's stuff like that that makes a guy give up football for D&D.

  • Dude...he got the number wrong. I have said 65 was holding and when I turn around it really 63 next to 55.

  • @Swordsfor200Alex Yeah, but if he had taken the call back when the coach points out that I wasn't on the field, then I would have forgiven him. The problem was that he refused to admit that he was wrong.

  • @jogiff Goober....you didn't do anything wrong and the coach knew it wasn't you so what is your problem? The holding did occur on the play the official just got the number wrong when he reported it to the sideline. Happens all the time. Go play D&D and don't roll a "1"

  • @Swordsfor200Alex Yeah, maybe it was an honest mistake and there was actually some holding going on even if he called the wrong number. But what bothered me was that he refused to admit that he made a mistake.

And don't worry, I only roll twenties.

  • @jogiff Even when I'm rolling d8s, so it's kind of weird.

  • @jogiff Cool...I wrote the 1996-1997 3.0 rules for that edition. I was contracted by TSR first then they sold out to WOTC. It took us 18 months to put together the new rulebook. Then they changed it to 3.5 and now they have 4.0. Just like corporations to come up with new ideas to make more money and force everyone to buy new books. Now Hasbro owns the rights to the game.

  • he blew the whistle cuase the white guy while falling touched the blue guy 3 cm from his penis and 5 cm from his right knee wich in the footblall rules section 41. (3) means automatic touchback

  • of course!

  • lmfaoooooo!!!!!!

  • what?????

  • Im pretty sure that in Highschool that it is an automatic touchback.

  • Palmer is bomb haha this is kinda old

  • "It's oblivious that this is a pass." Typos gone wild.

  • hahahahahhahhahhahaha.

  • Just so theres no argument rule 8-5-3 it is a touchback when (A) any free kick(kickoff), scrimmage kick(punt) which is not a scoring attempt, breaks the plane of Rec. teams goal line unless the rec. team choses to take at the Kicking teams first touching if it occured....(D) A forward pass is intercepted in the defenses endzone(the one they are defending). you can find this on pg. 66 NFHS rule book

  • Staceywatt, What are you talking about free kicks for??? It's oblivious that this is a pass. You can return an interception from the endzone. To see the officials reaction at the end of the play, I think he was in error...but

If this is an overtime procedure than he did the correct thing. Without knowing the circumstances leading into the play who knows.

Get some more classes before you start quoting the N.F Rule book. BTW see page 88 for overtime procedure. Have a nice day.

  • hahahahaha

  • I was talking about kicks because I was citing the touchback rule from the NFHS rule book dumbfuck

  • @UmpireVS ur right but just for the record this wasn't overtime, i'm actually the one who caught it and it was the final play of the first half

  • @UmpireVS YES! OBLIVIOUS!!!! IT'S OBLIVIOUSLY A PASS! DUH...

  • @UmpireVS the critique on his body language and signal sharpness is nice, but this is HS, not NFL.

  • you left out some keys words, "and becomes dead there in B's possession."

That means he is tackled there or goes out of bounds or takes a knee. This official blew this call.

  • These refs did not mess up. In High School according to the NFHS rules book a interception IN THE ENDZONE can NOT be returned... It is an automatic touchback. These refs made the right call. Give them a break. I should know I have been a High School official for 7 years.

  • If that's a touchback, why did the ref throw a flag?

  • That was a bean-bag, not a flag. Some officials' associations have the refs bean-bag the spot of interception.

  • The Ref messed up. It didn't cause any harm. Sure the guy with the ball could have returned the ball for a TD or he could have been tackled at the 2 yard line coming out. Refs make mistakes. This one didn't cost anybody anything. Move on.

  • Why are people saying one of the players stepped out of bounds.? No one stepped out of bounds..!!!

It was a clean interception with no defensive pass interference...It's totally obvious to see that the Referee decided who was going to win the game before the game ever started.!!!

    CROOK..!!!!!

  • the guy stepped out of bounds, you cant do that. plays dead once that happens

  • The player who stepped out was not the guy who caught the ball. He was another teammate. open your eyes and look.

  • how is this the worst call ever? i've seen tons of calls that ruined games, so what they made you take a knee, cry more please.

  • let me just say im the one who actually made the interception and i was pissed off, no reason to blow the whistle, and it definitely wasnt a touchback

  • You are absolutely right to bee upset about it .The ref should not have called you down. you were obviously on your feet the whole time and stayed in bounds. great play!

  • He Probably Called It For A Touchback!

  • who the hell is the douchebag yelling touchdown...that's an interception. Wrong endzone for a touchdown!!

  • he thought our reciever was gunna catch it dumbass

  • watch it again...and notice it was after the whistle blew DUMBASS!

  • no shit u stupid fuck he yelled that before the whistle

  • 22 seconds....AFTER THE WHISTLE! The kid yells "touchdown baby"

  • easy pal. lol everything is going to be ok.

  • hahahahaha lol

  • was this peachtree ridge and lawerenceville? im from mill creek

  • no u dumbass. lawerenceville doesnt have blue anywhere in their uniforms

  • well sorry i wasnt looking i just saw the all blue team dont be such an asshole

  • In some states when a kickoff is fielded in the end zone, it is an automatic touch back. It is possible the same could be true on an interception or fumble recovery in the end zone to take the decision away from a young player. Not saying I agree, but it's a possible explanation.

  • in oklahoma kickoffs in the endzone are automatic touchbacks and in our conference we play teams in texas, where its not. also texas allows cut blocking which OK doesnt

  • Yeah the ref didnt help the blue team, he wouldnt have gone 20 yards most likely.

  • wtf???

  • Would this rule vary at all state to state?

  • National HS Federation rules, used by most states, do NOT allow returns out of the endzone. NCAA rules, used by Texas HS football and maybe some others, allow returns and cut-blocking (same rules you see on Saturdays in the Fall). Federation rules are different, but every year they seem to be more like NCAA. Until a year or two ago the Fed allowed more than one forward pass on a down if the first one was caught behind the line. Just changed that one.

  • In a way, the ref might have done the team a favor because chances are, he would have gotten tackled inside the 20 yard line.

  • dats true

  • bullcrap call..im a junior and one of my teammates returned one 103 yards. there is no reason to blow the whisle on an interception.

  • In High School, when the ball breaks the plane of the goal line and someone has possesion, It can be one of two things: A Touchdown or a Touchback,.

    Correct Call

  • Wrong. On an INTERCEPTION, it can be run out. Its only a dead ball on a kickoff or punt return. What it is, is an inadvertant whistle. Give the ball to the defense on the 20.

  • Wrong. It's different for an interception. If the offense has possession, it is either of those two things. Or on a punt/kick return, the ball crossing the goalline calls for a touchback. But an interception can be run out.

Wrong call. It was an inadvertant whistle, and the ref knows it. He doesn't know what to do one he blows the whistle because he knows he messed up.

  • it depends on the league, dumbasses

  • no it cant be a touchback unless they get tackled. if they just catch it they can run it back

  • no if he catches the interception and never leaves the endzone (knealing down or getting tackled) its a touchback

if he decides to run it out, the spot of the ball will be where he gets tackled.

if he runs out and back into the endzone, getting tackled its a safety

  • U FUCKNUT DUMBFUCK STUPID SHIT! shut the fuck up u stupid nigglet. i know what im talkin about dumbass. THATS NOT A FUCKING TOUCHBACK U FUCKTARD!

  • Or a safety....

I realize that has no relation, but I had to add.

    Also

Incorrect call, why blow the whistle if he wasn't downed on contact or taking a knee?

What does it hurt/help either team?

  • all refs suck.

  • all refs suck.. thats like saying teachers suck.. you need em

  • Dumb ref or dumb rule, plain and simple.

  • that ref is drunk

  • In High School Football it is a touchback when the ball goes in the endzone on INT, punts and kickoffs.

    Correct Call

  • Only if the person is downed in the endzone. It can be attempted to be ran back out. At least in my games just this past season we were allowed to run the ball back out.

  • Actually I think its a rule in high school

if you pick it off in the end zone you are automatically down

dont know why but I have seen it before

  • WTF change job dude!!!!

  • to be fair to the ref in high school if a kick lands in the endzone, even if the player catches it, it's down automatically. The guy can't return it. The ref probably just got a little confused or something.

  • it was an interception.

  • obviously it's an INT. I'm just trying to think what the ref must have been thinking.

  • In High School Football it is a touchback when the ball goes in the endzone on INT, punts and kickoffs.

  • that was terrible...he was clearly attempting a return or at least considering. that jackass forgot its not baseball lol..

  • Yep, that is a classic IW (Inadvertant Whistle). The Defensi is allowed to attempt to return it. You can tell the official realizes his mistake right away.

  • Sorry, I can't spell.

  • I don't like bad calls as much as the next guy but bottom line is when the whistle is blown the play is over. Oh and not to be a spell freak but it's Ref not Reff. Referee has one F.

  • Some one yelled "Touchdown Baby" in the backround????explain if that made sense.

  • alum football player. his lil bro plays on the team. anyways he was making fun of the reff

  • He blew the whistle, and the play ended. Arguing about it now does nothing but make yourself waste time. Was it the right call? Depends on the rules of the specific league there, and whether he might have gotten confused, or whether a ball intercepted in the endzone is an automatic touchback.
