  • YOUR MOMMA LIKES TO GARDEN

  • "Just before the heaven's opend and everything got soked." - Possitive and Creative.. much better than " I hate this rain....."

  • Soo.... what exactly IS cross processing anyway?

    lol.

  • During a 7D video tutorial I saw that when you shoot RAW ,the preview of the image you see on the LCD is that of a compressed jpeg which would explain why the colors would be better on your LCD and look differently on your monitor, because on your monitor you would be seeing the actual dull RAW image .... Provided, of course if you were shooting RAW :)

    Cheers Gavin

  • I find the best way to get a cross process look is to use a gradient map layer set to soft light and opacity dropped to about 20-25%

  • once again gavin,thank-you for your educational and informative videos.i feel as you are talking to us,rather than talking at us.enjoy so much, keep up the excellent work.

  • Great pictures :)

  • Can you do this in Photoshop Element? Or just the CS version?

  • amazing

  • can you do all this in photoshop elements 7????

  • how do u make these photos look soooooo amazing?

for example the flower at 2:12

  • at the end when you are applying a layer mask the second time, right click the layer mask to select everything in black and then apply that to your new layer mask :D

  • Another great tutorial Gavin!! Keep up the inspiring tutorials :-)

  • Just recently stumbled across your video's... I thought here we go.. another photography video; all waffle and no substance ... HOW WRONG COULD I BE !! I have found your video's a great help. No "Mines bigger than yours, this is just some of the gear I have".. I had almost given up looking at photography tutorials.. So thank you for talking "Plain English and showing "HOW" from start to finish.. It is really appreciated. My Nikon is coming out of it's bag right now.!

    Dave

  • 2 words light room

  • wow that first pic was amazing.. is that a canon 1D MRK4?

  • why the ras did GrimeDaily like this??

  • i really like how you first showed the proses of taking the picture than editing it. Very well done and informative!!!

  • very interesting tutorial! greetings from italy :)

  • Gavin,, added to ur amzing and lovely way in explaining the lessons..

ur videos r so decent.. the quality of image, the voice..

one word to describe that = PERFECTiON !

  • Personally I feel the images are far too over-edited... My opinion as a hobby photographer..

  • You are amazing. Thank you. You hellp for my!

  • GH = legend

  • hello,

    nice tutorial!

i would like to know which program did you use to screen capture your tutorial?

    thanks

  • This is what I was looking for. Thank you!

  • those photos look amazing i wish i could take a pic like but my camera is definatly not as good as that

  • Hi guys come and see my travel photography vlog on my channel

  • It doesn't make sense to use a wide angle lens and get as close as you can if you want a shallow depth of field... step back and use a longer focal length.

  • @AlexMoores

you are right in ONE point: longer focal lenghts DO make the depth of field more shallow.

but you are forgetting that decreasing the distance to the object does that too.

So being that close up is actually a little more effective.

But most importanly: if he had used a longer focal length , the look would've been TOTALLY different. The entire wide angle effect would be lost - of course. A tighter angle would've made this photo boring.

  • Gavin, do you always set your camera to shoot RAW?

  • @apec2615 -shooting in raw lets the photographer have much more opportunity when editing the image in photoshop, or whatever editing system you use. the only downfall to Raw is that they are very large files. but worth it if photoshop is part of the shot.

  • 1:40 0_o that looks really good!

    all your photos do!

  • nice..! very helpful! thank you

  • How do you get the dark almost black background please? thanks. Russ

  • I am using photoshop 7 and it does not have lens correction filter, but i like the effect that it gives. can you recommend any other tool that would give the same effect.

    Thanks.

  • @15Reading Assuming you are talking about the vignette:fairly easy to do without Lens Correction, and you will have more control over it this way.

    1) Create a new layer above your image: make it pure black.

    2) Add a layer mask to this.

    3) Use the gradient tool and select a radial/circular gradient.

    4) Set the "Offset" value to around 50.

    5) Draw your gradient line from the middle of the picture to the edges of the screen.

Play around with the offset value to achieve different vignettes.

  • The Pictures on this video have a very nice contrast, with vivid colours and a dark background, have has this been achieved?

  • Will I be able to take these shots with my Nikon D90 (18-105 mm) lens?

    Cheers!!

  • do you underexpose all of your shots to make them more vivid? or is that after processing?

  • what camera are you using in this video?

  • brillaint, thanks for that

  • just out of interest how edited are you photos?

  • I am really impressed with your videos, wish I had found out about them ages ago, they're brilliant.

  • genius!

  • Good video!

  • Hi, is this 24-105 lens?

  • yer its says at the begging

  • will the quality of image be reduced when using photoshop or other editing software?

  • @barangayabqaiq

Only if you save your photos in jpeg mode. You lose quality to jpeg every time you save it. Another reason for shooting raw and saving in psd or tiff or png - no loss of quality if you have to reopen a file, retouch and save again.

  • Gavin

do you use any filters on front of lense

always very informative and not to techyy

    cheers

    Dave

  • Just a Hoya UV filter.

  • @PhotoGavin thats what i dont get, why do people put another piece of optically inferior glass infront of an obscenely expensive L lens?

  • @alexhamster1134 To protect the outside lens element, that is. Because a scratch on a 100$ UV filter is more pleasant than a scratch on a 1000$ lens :D.

  • @Eclipse6491 front element has a scratch resistant coating. wear a lens hood, no scratches. what kind of mad situation are you in in order for the front to get scratched? its photography, not boxing.

  • @alexhamster1134 I don't know, maybe people just want a guarantee that their lenses' front element is safe. ^^

  • @Eclipse6491 isnt it up to the photographer to ensure hes not in a situation where the lens is at risk? the best ones are weather sealed right (rain, dust, sand). a big lens hood can absorb a lot of punishment :p

whenever i put a piece of something in front of the lens i get ghosting/incorrect focus...

  • Wow Adoring ur video.. i learned usufull stuff on Photoshop :) thank you~

  • Buen video. Gracias!

  • sorry for being daft, but can someone explain the cross processing concept to me? what is it, how/why did it result in unpredictable colour shifts?

  • Cross processing is from the days of film photography when people would develop their film using chemicals meant to process a different type of film to get the effect similar to that shown in the video.

  • I love this weather for photography, when people i know get upset on their wedding days because the suns not shining, i tell them how luck they are because the photo will be fabulous with one squinting facing or reflection on peoples glasses.

  • I love the vignette option. This is brilliant.

  • aww I wanted to see how you did the leaf one (the first image you took)

  • Hello, you photos are amazing. I would like you to do some videos about photographing macro. I love macro photos but i dont have good enough lens. By the way, I use Olympus E-410 with 14-42 F3.5 - 5.6 lens. And I live in Estonia. Thanks.

  • Nice one Gavin...

  • Great Video as always. You can't beat the British summer!

One quick point, you could have copied the layer mask from the brightness/contrast into the photo filter layer by alt clicking and dragging.

  • Brilliant use of color shift, vignette, an old piece of wood and a flower.

    Cheers.

  • Another great video. Listening to you describe the weather, it almost sounds like you were here in Vancover today.

  • Once again Gavin shows you don't need an expensive or complicated set up to take a great shot.

    Well done Gavin!

  • This tutorial answers a bit the question I've asked on your previous post. Using Camera Raw plus Photoshop filters could be as good as using Lightroom directly.

    Again, nice job!

    Ornorm

  • Thank you!! I always wondered how this was achieved :-)

  • You are just the best Gavin! Will you marry me?

  • I think he's already married ;o)))

But, should I be a woman, I would surely ask the same question ;o)))

  • So informative. You've always got a good technique to share with us. Thanks so much.

  • thanks for sharing ;)

  • woow, very nice one! :)

  • thank you so much, i am looking this ago

  • Once again great video easy to follow

  • Another awesome video Gavin! Concise and fun to watch!

  • Gavin, thanks again for a great video, I tried it all and it works great. Thanks

  • You are wonderful

    Thank you

  • You're basically the best human. Plain and simple.

  • Thank you! AMAZING skills, continue what you do, such a clear and helpful voice! Very well explained.
