  • Poor sweetiepie! That cough sounds so uncomfortable. I hope it's a bit better. I used to have a tea made of honey and lemon, too. It does soothe the throat. Hot toddies are good, too. Sounds like that's what you made when you added the whiskey. I put Vick's Vapo rub on my chest and cover it with a thin dish towel and put a heating pad on it, maybe that's the modern equivelent to an old fashioned mustard plaster. Hugs

  • All better now !! :-D Thanks & Hugs!

  • A bit late...

It was done, but hard time finding time just to upload...

    Couldn't resist this great topic...

    ((HUGS))

  • sorry to be so late watching... the subject seems really good ! my dad and granddad always gave us warm gin and ginger for bad colds... we hated it as kids ! people over her would make warm sliced potato plasters. liked this ! take care !!!

  • Hope that cough is getting better. I like this topic too. I'm gonna make a response this weekend. Everything I know about that stuff I've learned from my Nan : )

  • Ooooh, I would love to see a vid response from you! Thanks - I'm feelin' all better now! xoxo

  • Hope you feel better this is very interesting

  • Thanks & join in if you like!

  • I've always heard that stump water would cure warts.

  • Mmmm ...stump water..yummy! :-)

  • Lordy here is a home remedy I have never heard of outside of my family, yet I promise as gross as it sounds, it DOES work. When I was little my and the adults would get a cold with a bad cough, my Grandma would make an syrup...in a saucepan add 1/2c brown sugar and 1 onion cut in half. Boil until it becomes a liquid syrup then take by the tablespoon. It is HORRIBLE but it works.

How strange is that? Haha...!! Hope you feel better soon! -Jennifer

  • Yuck !! ha ha haaaa!

  • Poor thing...I hope that you get well soon honey!!! You've really been through the wringer lately my dear.

    HUGS HUGS HUGS

  • Feelin' much better now thanks mic. I made this vid last Friday when I think the cold had peaked. Hugs!

  • Great one Chris!! Hope you are feeling all better soonest!! Blessings, Ang

  • Thanks & Hugs Ang !!

  • Aww, get better soon Chris! I am actually battling something right now..feel horrible..keep running a fever! Home remedies that work for me...if you are nauseas place a cold damp wash cloth on your neck it will subside. If you are coughing rub some vicks on your feet and put socks on...you will stop coughing. If you have an abscess on your gum place a penny on it..the copper will draw the infection out! That's all for now! ;)

  • A penny? Really? That's awesome. Thanks for joining in Lisa. Hugs!

  • p.s. Hope you get feelin' better soon!

  • You are sooo darned cute. Hope you feel better soon. SmileyD

  • Hey you !! Nice to see your name here. Hugs!

  • My dad use to make us hot totties really strong very hot tea with lemon honey and whiskey for a cold it worked well.

To draw thorns and such he would wrap what ever body part in bacon and take it off the next day the throrn or what ever would be gone.

I spray my dogs before their baths (long and short haired dogs) with SSS let it set for an hour or two and then i bath them with a mild dog shampoo and it keeps flees ticks flies etc off of your dog. I do this once a month.

  • it is much better for the dog than the poisons! When we were young and got lice my mom started washing our hair this way once a month and we never had lice again, even when all of the other kids in school did.

  • Very interesting!

  • Wrapped in bacon? Now that's a new one! Perhaps it is what the bacon is cured in that does the trick? Thanks!

  • Bless your heart, I can't believe you are still ill. Get better soon. I will have to think ifwe have home remedies. Hmmm

  • I'm better now Beth thanks. :-)

  • Love all your home remedies! Hope you feel better soon.. You should do some of the stuff you talked about to get rid of your cough and all..LOL

  • I took that awful tasting Buckleys Cough Syrup Complete ... it did the trick! Thanks Judy!

  • I only remember this because you talked about the mustard plaster, but a spoonful of yellow mustard can get rid of the hiccups. It DOES work, most of the time, but it's hard not to cringe when you swallow it.

  • Gosh, you do sound sick! Hope you feel better soon... Get out the mustard! Hugs, Dale

  • I'm feelin' better now Dale thanks!

  • I don't remember the home remedies right now but I know there must have been plenty. I do remember being given a hot water bottle when ever I had a cold, and I loved it. Kept me quiet and happy for a long time = )

  • Yes, a nice hot water bottle wrapped in soft towel or blanket...felt so comforting. Hi Pippy! oxo

  • Gosh, that jinx is STILL with you! Tis' just not right. My Grandma used to fix us 'milk toast'. She toasted white bread, buttered it and sprinkled a little white sugar, then covered it with warm milk. Part of the magic was that it was served in the special bowl with the Spanish lady dancer at the bottom. This was for upset stomach. She also told me to rub whiskey on my son's gums when he teethed. Finally, we had the famous hot tea with lemon and honey for cough and cold. Great topic!

  • Gramma's always had a special bowl, mug or tea cup didn't they?! I remember such pictures in the bottoms of each. :-) Thanks for the memory Liz. Hugs!

  • Sorry - nothing on my end. I was taught to suffer and stop whining. :)

    Hope you feel better soon.

  • (((Danny)))

  • Thais love vics vapor rub. They sniff it to get rid of bad smells around them. For some reason my wife uses it a lot. I wonder why? :O

    Get well soon!!!

  • ha ha ha haaaa!

  • I have been thinking of doing a video about getting rid of hickups

  • That would be great if you can. Hugs!

  • Hope your feeling better soon.

Try boiling water in a pot with a Tbs of FRIAR'S BALSAM added to the water. Let it simmer on the stove and it will kill the germs in the house and make you feel better.

  • Do you drink it after? xoxo

  • @bugsinrug Oh no...don't drink it ! Just inhale :-)

  • That description of the mustard plaster thing is pretty disturbing - I'm not sure I'd want to do that at ANY age.

RE: bug spray always stung my eyes.

Other than hot tea with honey and lemon, I can't think of any home remedies to help you out. I hope you feel better soon!

    (((Chris)))

  • (((Curt)))

  • Sorry to hear that you're under the weather. Hope you feel better soon (((Chris)))

Shot of Whiskey will clear your throat a little. Enough shots and you won't remember your sore throat.

  • I'm better now..just tired out. I made the video last Friday...it was a hellish week I'll tell ya. Hugs!

  • Oh you poor dear. I hope you get well soon. Very good tips you gave. I've never had a muster plaster that I can remember. But Mom and Dad swore by a vaporizer! haha. They used to make tents over our beds with sheets and aim that vaporizer at us. Yah! haha. And I remember being put in the tub and ice surrounding me to bring down a fever. I remember my teeth chattering. haha. Hugs Chrislane! I hope you get well.

  • Yup...vaporizers and ice baths...all part of kids, their fevers and their colds. Hugs Melissa!

  • Aww feel better soon Chris, you seem to have either been poorly or injured recently!

    x hugs x

  • I feel much better than when I made this video last Friday. Thanks twish! xoxo

  • The bug thing sounds useful thanks Chris :-)

  • (((Ran)))

  • Hi Chris, Sorry to hear you've been sick .You sound just like me. I think I've had the same thing as you but I'm feeling much better today. I don't know how this helps but for the last few days I've garggled with very warm salt water. It really seems to help :))

  • Thanks, and I am feeling better today. I made this vid last Friday. Good to hear that you are feeling better too and yes, gargling with salt water works!

  • I guess I don't have any home remedies, I just buy everything :-(

I will have to give the bug spray after the bite a try, and the rolaids for the canker sore! Thanks Chris!

  • Hi Ken! Thanks & Hugs!

  • Hi Bugsy,

My grandmother used to make a special brew for a persistent cough. Just boil down one bottle of dark beer with 1 cup of sugar to make like a cough syrup. Take a small shot glass every 2 hours. I´m actually convinced she used this recipe more for pleasure than for treating the cough

  • Hee hee! Sounds good to me! :-) Thanks!

  • Spiked tea would work better ;). Nah honey and lemon is good too. I ll put anything on a bug bite to take the itch away lol. Intresting and great tips.

  • Thanks Kim !! xox

  • Chris - glad to hear you're feeling better....

I love this show & tell series you're doing, something fun to look forward to each Monday! ;)

Never had a mustard plaster - heard of 'em though -

lots of cool remedies - esp the Tums & SSS.

I'm gonna have to think 'bout this one...

  • Thanks so much. Hope you can join in with a vid response. Hugs!

  • You are so cute!! My Dad used Salt Water for EVERYTHING. I just wimp out and go to the Dr.

  • Thanks & warm salt water is great to gargle with for a sore throat.

  • Gotta remember that antacid trick. I remember my Grandma every time my brother and I got a sniffle, upset stomach or anything...she gave us a big spoonful of cod-liver oil. yuck!!! that was the worst. lol

    Hugs, Irene

  • Yuck..cod liver oil !! :-( Hugs Irene !

  • now I have never heard of the antiacid thing thats too cool..its rainy and gross here today

  • Yes, stick a Tums or Rolaids whatever on the canker sore and it will shrink it as well as coat it so that you can eat or drink. It's sunny here Bryan! xoxo

  • LOL your sounds are great

  • (((Melissa)))

  • lol Chris - one Summer not so long ago I had a Summer cold. It was a wonderful hot summer day and I was feeling awful with a full head cold, I decided to have a hot toddy (That's honey, lemon, whisky and hot water). I felt so much better that I had another one, and another one and by the time hubby came home I was feeling great and.............. drunk! lol

We also use Avon's Skin So Soft as a midge repellent, so does the UK army and firemen, and we all smell lovely too! Video on its way

  • Yup...nothin' like a good old hot toddy when your feelin' blah .. hee hee! Hugs!

  • Keep drinking the tea & keep up with the fluids. Yes, the honey & lemon is effective.

I remember my mother using Vicks on me. She also used some kind of drawing salve for removing splinters that had broken off beneath the skin & couldn't be pulled out. It was amazing how well it worked.

Those are about all that I remember.

Please take care & rid yourself of that nasty cold.

    Hugs, Christina

  • Thankyou Christina, I am much better today. It was last Friday when I made this video. Big hugs!

  • My grandmother used to make a honey and lemon mixture and it really does soothe your sore throat! Vicks is great too. I think tho, you should see the doctor! It sounds like you have bronchitis! Feel better!!!

  • This vid was made last Friday, so I am much better today thanks. I think it was/is bronchitis as it took so much out of me...still tire quickly today. Hugs!

  • Dangit! When I saw the subject I thought I would talk about mustard plasters! LOL My mom used to put them on us all the time when we were sick. They really do help the chest congestion. My mom used to make it with egg instead of water and she would put it between two paper towels and then put it between the layers of a folded bath towel, so it didn't burn quite as much on our chests. Now I gotta think if there is anything else I can come up with! LOL

I hope you feel better soon!

    Hugs!

  • Egg? Hmmm..it's a wonder it didn't fry it right on your chest....ha hahaaa! Hope you can think of some more tips Lori Hugs!

  • Awwe... you poor baby. You are getting your share of colds this year.:(

Aaaack.... those mustard poultices were the worst. We also got a slice of oinion with a couple drops of kerosene and sugar on top we had to eat! Talk about YUUUUUUUUUCk!

We use SSS on dogs and us when we fish inland to keep the noseeums, skeeters and flies off us!

I got nothing here for remedies except for hiccups take tlb spoon of lemon juice.

I really hope you feel better soon Chris!

    HugZ sugar! JoJo

  • "Kerosene"??!! Omg!!!! That on top of an onion would do me in ! No amount of sugar on top could bribe me to eat that. ha ha haa! Hugs!

  • @kismet0717

Oh I like that for hiccups...my hubby gets them all the time and I kept telling him to take a teaspoon of vinegar!!! Oh the poor man...now i feel so bad!

    LOL

  • Ah Chris..feel better. I wanted to do a response to your vid but I'll have to see after lunch. My hips are killing me today..anyone got home remedy for that?

I think our phone conversation should have gone on YT. LOL...OMG talk about laugh!!

Take care and I'll see what I can do later.

    Love ya~Teed

  • What??!! You promised me a vid response. If you'd quit swayin' those hips when you walked, maybe they wouldn't hurt as much....bwhahahaaaaaaa! Love U

  • It's from the SPREAD!! Bwahahahaaa!!

    I'll see in a bit. :-D

  • Great topic, but my mom wasn't much for home remedies. I've known people that did the Vicks / boiling water thing. I'll have to try the Rolaids on my next canker sore.

Hope you get to feeling better!

  • Thanks, I feel alot better today...the vid of course was made last Friday..hee hee..my bad.

  • poor you i hope you get to feeling better asap

lol @ not a calf like at a farm

when i was getting my wisdom teeth in i put a clove on the ouchy area and that made my mouth feel so much better and it gives you nice breath too :)

    xoexo
