If I were a kid in Japan, I'd probably be a bit skittish about getting Sei-jin-iwai(which you get when you become a proper in the eyes of the giver), as I think that would say, "Congrats, you're an adult, now go get a job like the other adults, you bum"
You'd actually be surprised! Most people don't have much trouble reading kanji, but ask them to write some of the more difficult ones and they may get stuck. There are lots of quiz shows that test kanji ability (of native speakers) on Japanese TV :)
wow, this was very helpful. I lived in Japan for 5 years without knowing what those were. I just randomly bought those envelopes as omiyage for my family back home because I thought they look so fancy. hehehe...

(Don't know why people thumbed down your comment...)
I imagine since they're exposed to it ALL the time, and they spend more than their spare time studying it (like me), that they probably do fine.
And...wow, the Japanese sure do give a lot of money gifts xD

Handwritten kanji can be a challenge to read, even if you're familiar with the character already. For me at least.

Kanji is pretty hard but I guess once you have been studying it for a while you just get the gist of it.
