Who is playing all the leads on that Firebird? Is that Medlocke? He is doing note for note practically. It sounds KILLER. I know Ed, and Gary are adding in fills while playing Rhythm , but who is that Guy on the left with the beard, and Gibson Firebird??
@ThePhallystorm Nope...that would be Randall Hall. He was a guitarist in Allen Collin's short-lived solo band after he left Rossington-Collins. Filled in for Allen due to his auto accident and subsequent paralysis, later canned for standing up for himself against Gary and Johnny. Is what it is....
This Lady kicks it! Even in heyday Southern Rock female lead singers in the genre were pretty rare. There were so many talented Southern Rockers that came from within and around Lynyrd Skynyrd.
@INYFBWIA The guitarist that plays the rhythm break at 2:15 is an original L.S guitarist named Ed King. Gary R. is on the right at 2:15 dressed in black.
Very few women can pull off the Rock Show, I mean lets face it, its a male dominated area, but, there are some outstanding exceptions to this rule. This lady has it in spades, right up there with the Wilson sisters and Stevie Nicks, I never get tired of hearing her strong voice with the sothern rock back drop.
if anybody in the band see's this let me know if u remember the show in omaha nebraska at the music hall. it must be nearly 20 yrs but that show still remains with me and as THEE most powerful musical moment i have ever been part of. The emotions you poured out that night was the only time i felt the musicians on stage needed the people they were performing for more than the other way around. i will carry that concert with me forever and it about time i said thank you!!!
Dale Krantz-Rossington was a .38 Special backup vocalist before the Rossington-Collins Band ('79-'82 era). ...Randall Hall complained about money in '93/'94 and was dismissed, as was Ed King for his heart issue in '95. Lots of legal dirt between '93-'96 in and around "Gary Rossington's Lynyrd Skynyrd", as Blackfoot's Charlie Hargrett so aptly calls them.
@kelvisparsley64 but aint it funny, that Rickey Medlocke owns all copyrights, all trademarks and all licensing rights for the "Blackfoot" name? AND he is allowing Charlie and Greg to perform using the "Blackfoot" name? I say that its very kind of Rickey to allow him to do this....also isint it odd that "Blackfoot" now had Mike Estes as their "Rickey" frontman? Whats more odd is that Mike was a member of Lynyrd Skynyrd , then he was fired! and Rickey Medlocke came in to replace him...weird huh
Rickey Medlocke gets paid every time a Blackfoot song is played ...he is a good guy I guess but a business man. He doesn't let them perform as Blackfoot for free or from kindness of heart. And as for the 'Gary Rossington's Lynyrd Skynyrd' comment......it is his Lynyrd Skynyrd...Ronnie, Gary, Allen and Bob were the beginnings of Skynyrd....it is his Skynyrd...he's the last of the wild ones!
@guitarzan1961 I've heard stories of Rickey's over-inflated ego, and some come from professional musicians that have known him for 30+years. I like Rickey's music with Blackfoot, talented guy, hell of a slide-guitar player...but that attitude will come back to haunt him yet again. Skynyrd in it's current form won't last forever.
Same PPV I taped, the second broadcast, I got mine uploaded about the same time?!?! Compare the sound I guess, Mine is a little lower level. IIRC, the stereo was reversed when broadcast so I reversed them back Left to Right channel for my copy
I have a real stupid Q. 2 ask. Did MrsRossington sing back up for Lynyrd Skynyrd? say back in 2004 around that era. Just curious I got to meet some of Lynyrd Skynyrds band. And one of his back up singers look just like this lady. NA!! I sure its not. But would be nice if someone knows for sure.
@LynSkyn1981 Thank U for the info. So I guess that it was her and another lady I met with Lynyrd Skynyrd's band. WOW!!! She was real nice, down to earth and glad that I took my time to go say hello to them. As they where getting on their RV@Bush Intercontinental airport Houston. It would have been great to have met Mr.Skynyrd also. But his RV left before I had a chance. ALL I CAN Say Lynyrd Skynyrd and their band GOOD PEOPLE!!!!!
@SheaBearden I'm sure that I may have other questions in the near future. Now that I think of it I guess it was Dale who I saw and chat with very brief. There was another blond lady with her also. I can understand you being a Skynyrd dork. They are a class cool bunch easy to talk with. But mostly that night I talked to the drummer. They made him drive their RV to the hotel. LOL!! NA!!! I don't think he seemed to mind at all.
@MegaELECTRICEYE Yes, She and Gary Rossington have been togather along time, one of the other backup singers for Synerd was Cassie Gains, the sister of Steve Gaines, both died in the crash.
Loved Dale's voice since I first heard her singing back-up for 38 Special. When 38 Special lost her to Rossington-Collins Band, they new what Gary and Allen got. What a voice !!!
I keep coming back to this video. Must have enjoyed it a couple dozen times now.
Phenomenal.
What would it take to get Lynyrd Skynrd to feature Dale on this and a couple of others on their tour? If she were performing this, I'd be in the front rows.
Look at Randall's guitar : it's a "Telebird" with a left handed Telecaster neck, a Telecaster std treble pickup and a Firebird minihumbucking neck pickup!
Randall was choosen as substitute by Allen in 1987 and got Allen's '58 Explorer, but never felt comfortable with the neck. He had the idea of this Telebird to play Freebird.
@jackieb376 Originaly in the Rossington Collins Band, Barry Harwood sang vocals with Dale. He also played guitar too. also on backing vocals was bassist Leon Wilkeson
@LynSkyn1981 Yeah, of course Rossington, Collins, Wilkeson, and Powell had the chemistry because they had worked together for so long, but Barry Harwood's contribution to RCBs's success cannot be overstated. His writing, vocals and guitar work was what breathed new life into what could have been just another attempt at a comeback for Skynyrd. Of course Dale out front, her voice and her look was key also. But Barry was the THE KEY to their success in my mind.
AMANDA OVERMYER sounds just like DALE KRANTZ (no kidding) when she sings this same same song DON'T MISUNDERSTAND ME at all her Concerts promoting her new Album SOLIDFY (itunes). See Overmyer's version also posted on YOUTUBE ...
Right ! He played with the ACB and Allen Collins named him as substitute in Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1987 and gave him his '58 Explorer (that he didn't use a lot, feelinguncomfortable with the neck, what a waste!).
He plays here on his very special "Telebird" : guitar shape of a Firebird, Telecaster neck, bridge and treble pick up, and Firebird neck pickup!

I saw the Rossington Collins band at the Philadelphia Spectrum with 38 Special opening for them. You wanna talk about an incredible show. When they came out for the encore, Dale looked up and said "This is for you Ronnie", there wasn't a dry eye in the place. Then Billy Powell went into the piano intro of Freebird with a spotlight on the microphone out front, there was a deafening scream throughout the Spectrum. A concert I will remember for the rest of my life. Wow!!!
Saw them on two tours. The first tour Dale did the same thing in Roanoke Va with the Henry Paul Band and there was not a dry eye in the place when she said that. The most amazing part of the shows was Barry Lee Harwood and his amazing talent. Both times I saw them in Roanoke and once at the Capital Center he stole the show. The one thing that surprised me is that Barry Lee fit in so well and it was like watching a right handed Steve Gaines.
Dale truly is an amazing woman and an amazing singer. Met her along with most of the band one time. Greatest time of my life. Great musicians and great people.
I`ve always believed Travis Tritt would have been the perfect choice to front Skynyrd. His song writing, guitar play and vocals along, with Gary,Allen,Billy,Leon and Arti. WOW!
