@iraqveteran1 Actually lee did have slaves during the war. He freed them in 1862 after arlington was occupied since there really was no other option. also, a strong opponent to negro soldiers. The end of priisoner exchange came after fort pillow when grant requested that negro soldiers be treated as POW's and not slaves. Lee was adamant against that idea so was davis. THerefore americans rotted away in pow camps. I am aware of the irony of northerners owning slaves and southerners not.

@ToolBag48 Freeman was a Lee apologist. The Army of Northern Virginia ( R. E. Lee commanding ) captured many blacks during the campaign into Pennsylvania. Some free, some escaped slaves. They were sent back into the south and back into slavery. Morally, Lee thought slavery was wrong but he did nothing personally to bring it to an end.

As the northern states became more industrialized the south became afraid that their way of life would change. They destroyed EVERYTHING in their path, train tracks, farms, farm animals. The population was left destitute and it took decades for many of the areas to recover, some would even argue that there are areas that never recovered.

@iraqveteran1 Actually lee did have slaves during the war. He freed them in 1862 after arlington was occupied since there really was no other option. also, a strong opponent to negro soldiers. The end of priisoner exchange came after fort pillow when grant requested that negro soldiers be treated as POW's and not slaves. Lee was adamant against that idea so was davis. THerefore americans rotted away in pow camps. I am aware of the irony of northerners owning slaves and southerners not.

@ToolBag48 Freeman was a Lee apologist. The Army of Northern Virginia ( R. E. Lee commanding ) captured many blacks during the campaign into Pennsylvania. Some free, some escaped slaves. They were sent back into the south and back into slavery. Morally, Lee thought slavery was wrong but he did nothing personally to bring it to an end.

There were also many ohter political issues flying around. but fault should be placed on both sides of this conflict.

That is why the war ended.
So it depends on your time line. Mass desertions were reported in 1862 -- at Sharpsburg, where only 5,000 Confederate men in one corps formed out of 19,000

Yet another battle the South claims to have won. That's okay, you can have Antietam, and you can have Gettysburg if you like. According to at least one historian here on You-Tube, Lee won that battle, cause he managed to steal more horses in PA, than Sherman did in Georgia.

@UnionStatesHeritage Dont be silly the CSA didnt win ALL the battles. Im not about politics. Antietam was a defencive Southern victory almost like Fredericksburg. There is NO excuse why McClellan did'nt destroy Lee at Antietam. He let the Reb army get away, and so it lived to surrender at Appomatox rather than Antietam. Gburb? well, it was a great raid but the battle was a Union victory, but the Southern army gleemed valuable supplies they would not have gotten otherwise, so there was a win.

Yes, that is true.Union Commanders before Grant and Sherman (especially in the East) were timid, and made glaring mistakes, allowing the CSA to die a slow whimpering death, instead of going out with a bang.
Think its kind of strange. Lee is a hero for being a thief, Sherman is a villain.
Lee stole more than supplies... His army trafficked in human captives.

Who make a statement both past and present that is not anit-Confederate. The color bearer in our re-enactment battion is a black lady, who carries the Confederate Battle Flag. She dresses in the uniform of a man and trys to look like a man. All I can say is more Power to her and other black people who take such a stance. Deo Vindice!

Yep. That's EXACTLY the concept whites (especially in the South) use towards Blacks, and other minorities. Their level of "goodness" translates to how supportive of the white power structure, they remain.
Northerners and Westerners use the concept as well, but our culture has always been more of meritocracy, which serves as a vehicle for social change. The South did not (and too a degree, still doesn't) have that kind of culture. THAT is the diff.
