  • I saw the EXACT same dress for about 500 $, and making this own cost me 8,50 :p

  • i ABSOLUTELY ADORE this!! <3 thank you soo much! I'm so excited to buy the fabric and start making this myself, hehe you definitely earned my subscription! keep making great videos <3

  • i JUST finished making it!! it looks amazing! thank you soooooo MUCH! <3

  • Awww this is so pretty. Ive been meaning to make a skirt but havent had any new ideas but your video really helped me and its so classy! Thanks a lot :)

  • Oh wow thanks, I was going through videos on youtube to find a tutorial on making a high-waste skirt with an elastic band, and this was just what i needed :)

  • thank you! i think i may actually use this to make my wedding dress in the future. my betsey johnson prom dress from years ago was like a cocktail length version of my ideal bridal gown and i've been trying to find a way to make my own version of it, it has a pleated chiffon skirt/bottom just like this. i feel way less stressed now about pleating a fabric like chiffon. can't thank you enough!

  • great job, loved it. thanks!

  • The picture at beginning of video is SUCH an adorable way of wearing sheer skirts. I'm trying to make a shorter version of that silhouette after finding scattered star print chiffon identical to what D&G used this season on Ebay. Chiffon is not a fabric I've used before, and am slightly intimidated working with such a fine material, but this tutorial really helps show how to go about things. Thanks for taking a bit of the mystery out of it.

  • I love your accent. I accidently clicked your video but I'm glad i did. For some reason I have the urge to drink tea all of a sudden

  • you look like jordan sparks

  • I <3 <3<3<3 ALLL YOR VIDEOS!!!

  • hi :) I was looking through the questions you have answered and I'm hoping Im not repeating this question but, I love the bow on the back of your pink skirt and I would love to know how you did it. Did you sew it on your skirt or is it another piece you made? How ever you did I love it :) and I want it lol ~thanks in advance~

  • @AhdayahAhdawan It's left over fabric tied into a bow! x

  • *UPDATE*

The skirt has been washed (hand washed in cool water) and hung to drip-dry (no wringing).

Pleats stayed in, just a few that needed to be ironed back for a crisper look!

    xoxo

  • Gorgeous skirt, love the color!! Just one suggestion for you so that you won't have raw edges at the waistline .... sew the side seams first, then fold, press(to make it easier to sew) and sew the waist (the tunnel for the elastic) but leave about an inch open, slide in your elastic & sew the elastic just the way you showed, then sew the inch you left open at the waist. .... Just thought I'd offer you some tips for your next projects :D I hope you keep creating!!!

  • I love it!! One question though wont the pleats fall out in the wash?? x

  • why did the light pink skirt have a band at the waist and the blue one didnt. i would really like to know how to put that there. Thanks

  • @123isabellamarie she said its left over fabric tied into a bow at the waist I was looking for the same answer she previously was asked this as well

  • jw... when you wash the skirt, will the pleats go?

    thanks

  • thank you!

  • Wow...I'm sooo inspired. I am definitely going to make one ASAP!...Just for practice, I'll try it with a traditional fabric I have at home!

  • where did you get your fabrics from?

  • @littlestvoicexx I buy mine from a Fabric Store in Town or John Lewis for about £4-£10 per metre! x

  • amazing!

  • I think the skirt is lovely but its a little transparent, I think. Do you put something on under need it? I want to sew a darker fabric under need it what fabric can I use?

  • @BabeEli3 You can wear a body con skirt, body suit or leggings underneath. x

  • this was the perfect first DIY! I knew these skirts were easy to make (as people say) but I didn't know where to start, thanks! :)

  • cool beans! You can also create pleats by folding it at the waist tacking it and sewing it down

  • It's a very pretty skirt, but to me, it looks very transparent.

  • I cannot wait to attempt at making this, knowing me I will mess it up so I will buy extra fabric! I cant wait to see how you style it too!

  • Oh shirley, i noticed you didnt put any lining. Is tht okay?

  • I think that this was a great DIY for it to be your first one. You have a new subscriber.

  • Beautiful skirt and a great idea. Now I need to learn how to sew.

  • Beautiful skirt and a great idea. Now I need to learn how to sew.

  • How do you wash and dry this skirt?

  • The colour of the fabric is so beautiful! After seeing Pirates of the Carribean 4 it reminds me of mermaids :D You've totally gotten me into sewing too ^^

  • I'm so sorry if this has been asked, but do the pleats come out when the skirt is washed? I hope that's not a stupid question. My old netball skirt was pleated when I was little I always remember mum complaining about ironing the pleats back in!

  • could you do a video on how you made the denim shorts from the jeans your dad gave you? like how to make them smaller?

  • where did you get your rings? :D

  • Oh my goodness, this is brilliant! I'd love to see more of this sort of thing whenever you do it because it was really interesting and helpful! :) xo

  • I can't wait to see how you style it! I really wanted one of these skirts but the prices are so high. So happy I can just make my own now! :)

  • Do the pleats not come out in the wash? x

  • your hair is so pretty!

  • if you put the pins in the fabric horrizontally, the needle of the sewing machine will jump over them, meaning you dont have to unpin it whilst sewing :) and i'm definately making one of these after my exams, I LOVE IT!

  • You can use safety-pin instead of bobbypin it will be much easier :D

  • I swear a lot of girls are gonna have the same skirt as yours! U 've started a new trend shirley lol :)

  • Hey Shirley, I don't know if you still do requests, but can you pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee re create the look Kelly Rowland had at the Billboard Awards.

Youtube won't let me post a link but if you go on google you'll see it. Would mean a lot :D

  • YAY! Im so excited to make this! Going to get the fabric today!

  • THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU YOUR AMAZING!!!!!!

  • how would u wash this skirt? Would the pleats still be there after u wash it?

  • so you've totally made me want to make my own skirt! heck yeah and that blue is gorgeous!

  • How much fabric would you suggest if your plus sized?

  • @ConfidenceIsFierce I'd say maybe 4m wide, it all depends on how much pleats you want too. If you want lots you can even get more fabric! :) xo

  • beautiful! I`m going to look for fabric today! :D

  • you are so gorgeous! i love love love the skirt as well!!! great video!

  • where is the lace strapless from ?! i loveeee it!

  • Hair tutorial!

  • @laciena Have one! x

  • Hi Shirley :)... I REALLY hope you get a minute to answer my question.. I was wondering how u make the band around the peach/pink skirt. That was not shown in the bluer skirt, please advice? I would love to make this! Greetings From Suriname

  • @Kluermoi Left over fabric tied into a bow! x

  • Loved This Look Shirley! Looking Forward To The LookBook Tomorrow! :) xo

  • This is so pretty...you are so talented....

  • Gorgeous. <3

  • MAKE MORE DIY!!!! you're awesome

  • 1 I absolutely love this video. My summer is dedicated to exploring my artistic side so this video breathed life to that dream. One question I've always wanted to ask tho...Who creates/designs ur website because it is one of the bests I've seen!!

  • @ibifere21 Aww I'm glad Thank you, I do all my designs myself from scratch using Photoshop, then manipulate html/css to achieve my desired layout! :)

  • YOU should be on tv ... ur absolutely watchable...hehehe

No but seriously you should 0_0

  • Shirley I love this tutorial, it is not to difficult. I think you should do more. I love that indigo blue it is pretty.

  • @shirleybeniang FYI If you fold the pleats on a slight slant and not diretly on top of each other then pin the skirt with the pleats slightly over lapping then sew your waist band the pleats will be permanet and it will lay smoother. I know thats alot. LOL but great job;-)

  • @vchic07 Ahhh this is excellent advice!! I will bare this in mind when making the next one!! I do love you guys, thanks for all the help, comments and constructive criticism! :) xo

  • I love this and I'm looking forward to trying this skirt. Pls make more DIY vids I love ur style and always look forward to watching your videos. Thanks for sharing

  • more diys please! :)

  • Great DIY!

But the pleats are only temporary..? You could get them professionally pleated, then sew the skirt with the same tutorial, just a suggestion (:

  • where did you get your extensions?

  • OMFG.. *excuse my french* but the royal blue is just. Speechless stunning color

  • @shirleybeniang I would use a safety pin, rather than a bobby, just to protect from snags, and its also faster. Your skirt is beautiful. I am also doing summer clothes-making projects, so i hope you do more videos like this to inspire me to actually get started :)

  • looovvveee this sort of video from u! this is a beautiful skirt

  • wouldn't the pleats fade when you wash the skirt?

  • awesome!

  • plz do more!!

  • i love this! i must have a go! do the pleats stay in though as you used a silk chiffon (as silk isn't a synthetic material and natural fibers tend to not manipulate well unless it's a startch or something is used) plus im not 100% sure but i dont think you can get a mixture of chiffon and silk as chiffon is a final result of a yarn being woven in a specific way therefore the yarn would have been purely silk sorry that wasn't meant to sound picky just trying to pass on little knowledge i have :L

  • Hey Shirley, loved the tut im looking forward to making my own....quick question: After washing the skirt will the pleats remain in the fabric or will you have to iron them all in again?

  • @blessed100 Thanks love! I'm not a 100% sure, but if you use starch, they're bound to stay longer! Pleats tend to come of materials like these easily, that's not to say that you can't Iron them in again! :) xo

  • Wow Shirley, You kinda rock! I'll make one when I'm done school during summer. I can wear it to church!

  • Shirley this is amazing! Thanks for taking the time to make a video on this, very useful :)

  • @xbutterflywings Thank you! I'm glad you find it useful! Just some tidbits I thought I'd share! I'd love to do more DIY Tuts if everyone won't mind them! :) xo

  • @attitudeshowzit O.o

Did you not read the description? Better yet watch the video? *Sigh*

  • well done!

  • thank you so much for this, i really didnt want to shell out the 80 dollars, i hope you do more of DIY tutorials :) also, where did you get that white corset top from that you paired with the pink skirt, and how do you make that sash? xx

  • @chloemango11 Bustier's from Beyond Retro, and the sash is left over material tied into a bow! :) x

  • Really want to try this! x

  • its a bit sheer... what do u where underneath? a slip??

  • @ejemena Body con skirt or leggings! If you're a bit brave, a bodysuit. Lookbook tomorrow will touch on it! If you read my blog, I had a similar skirt, and wore it with a body con skirt underneath! x

  • shirley, what is on your nails :)?

  • @theeSHXT Info bar! xo

  • Shirley I love this so much. I am a DIYer and I like cutting things up lol.

I especially do it with shirts and jeans. But when I want to sew I just can't seem to get it right. I don't know how to thread the machine and I have an old Singer machine that my grannie gave me. I hustled with it again today but I just broke the needle :(

    help!

  • @estherni1 I always find reading the manual helps! All machines are different, and can be a bit difficult to get going (Confession : Took me an hour to figure out how the bobbin holder on this one worked LOL!)! If that fails, there are lots of videos here on youtube that can offer a bit of help, just search your machine model! :)

    xoxo

  • @shirleybeniang I think grannie lost the manual but I'll try and ask her. Thanks for the suggestions.

And LOL about your confession ;))))

  • I also have 1 question - I know this might sound stupid, but since you ironed in the pleats, do they stay in themselves? Will they disappear when you wash it? xx

  • @bonnie04 Will update you on this, when I wash mine! xo

  • This is awesome! Thanks SO much!:)

  • Yay!! Glad you find it helpful! ^.^ xoxo

  • i just got a sewing machine! thank you for giving me my first project :)

  • i am takin sewin lesson i jus b soo busy....but i luv ur skirt it was insiprational

  • first! yaayayyyyayayyyyayy

  • @mizzmodel33 no your not ;)

  • Oh my gosh, THANK YOU. I've been plotting to make a pleated chiffon skirt for AGES since the prices in shops are ridiculous so I wanted to make one, this is so so helpful. Thanks! xxx

  • This was really helpful! thanks!
