I hear this on the radio like at 5 am, and i woke up and wrote "the shins" in my wall. I live in chile, really far away from you, so i think is quite great
I say bravo to the shins for making a cover that sounds completely different than the original. How many covers do you hear that are merely covers...it's a refreshing look at the business of covers. Take a song that's good and change it drastically and make it your own.
This song played at the beginning of The Art of Getting By. I had only heard the Postal Service Version. A friend had told me a while back to listen to this rendition so when it started playing I was thinking...holy crap what is this song? I know it!
uhhh, don't kill me but I like the Postal Service version much better. I'm definitely an electronic fan though. I don't like the combination of orange/yellow guitar, and pink/dark green lyrics.....
@peaceloveandtofu5 That's not boring! it's how I remember everything (and why I'm so bad at history; dates don't have color). I only had that kind for a while, then I reallized that some sounds have color. Electric guitar is burgundy, higher pitched sounds are lemonade (yellow and pink) and lower pitched sounds are more like green and brown. Piano is blue and guitar is orange. It doesn't just come off the top of my head, but if I think about it a little I get the same color every time...
@shewolf418 Well according to the lyrics he died because his cells replicated so fast that he exploded, though it doesn't show the exploding bit in the video. I guess there something wrong with the air. . 0_o
I heard The Shins' version of this song first, but I also love the Postal Service's version as well. I adore both The Shins and The Postal Service, there is no choosing between them. They are both brilliant and gorgeous in their own way. :D
I know I'm gonna get a lot of hate for this comment, but I just hate it when people think they're so artistic when they have a good camera, and film their every day lives in black and white. Seriously? This song has nothing to do with anything he did in this video.
i honestly dont like this version. at all. even if it was an original it would suck and its kinda pissing me off. no wonder ive never heard of this band
@Dakotaisunavailable too bad they aren't together anymore.and considered by who? shins fans? Im a huge fan of the Shins, James Mercer and Broken Bells, but your statement made me laugh.
@magua4 ha yeah the day i heard that was a sad one. And sorry i wasn't specific, i didn't mean "mankind considers the shins...."; it was an article on Pitchfork a while back listing great live shows that were touring at the time. Of course, the guy could have been a raving Shins fan himself, so we're back where we started.
@waitandbleed18 The Shins have more albums sold, more views, more albums sold, more fans than The Postal Service. Two great groups, but to support The Postal Service by saying you haven't heard of The Shins is simply remarkable. The Shins are and will always be the more famous indie group out of the two.
i like both versions, but i think the original has a more fitting tone to it. i love the shins, love the postal service. i JUST found this cover. heard the original over 3 years ago
you know this song comes with the Postal Service Album if you buy it vinyl... I feel like they aren't competing so much as they're working together to make AMAZING music
@alecmccormack1234 I disagree. The original makes the lyrics much more vivid, IMHO. This is a good cover and all, but The Postal Service really makes me believe that the character in the song has boarded himself up in the closet and refuses to come out.
I don't consider this quite a remake or cover since they really took it and did something completely different. Aside from the lyrics, it sounds like a different song.
I really don't think you can compare this to the Postal Service...They're two totally different sounds even though it's the same song and they're both great for that sound! So, I think it'd be best just to call it a great song and say that the Postal Service did it first=]
Great cover, much respect from coming up with an original version too and not just replaying the same song on the same instruments. Very Nice, I love when he finally breathes the air in the end and dies.... lol
I love the end when he breathes in the air and the big mushroom cloud goes off. he gets to see the light and hear the birds and smell the air one last time.
you missed the point of the entire video, it's actually about Hiroshima and Nagasaki, it has nothing to do with literal silhouettes, it's referring to when the bomb went off how everyone was turned to a silhouette of ash!
clicked on this song thinking 'ey up aint this by postal service' and the 1st comment i saw was someone in major dispute about the very subject. then at that moment my brain melted pissed out my nose and i listened to the song and decided wiki would provide more coherent info than youtube commenters :)
Of course I like the Postal Service's original better. However, I love the vocals in this quite a bit. Ben's voice is rather calm, and it gives the song a very different, chilling feeling. The vocals in this aren't as calm, and there's a desperate feeling in this. I think this is how I'd be feeling if I were experiencing what was happening. A good example of this is at the "And I'm screaming at the top of my lungs, pretending that the echoes belong to someone, someone I used to know."
The whole song has kind of an odd, quasi-upbeat feeling when done this way.
Still, The Shins are an amazing band. I don't quite see the "desperate feeling"; I think The Shins do the cover justice. Do urself a favour and check out some more of their songs... I recommend "Red Rabbits" to start off...
As good of a cover as you can get. The Shins did a great job. However, the Ben's voice and Dntel's beautiful sonic washes can't be beaten. It lacks synth accordion!
Yeah, I said ALMOST always. Exceptions don't disprove trends. Familiarity breeds liking is a psychological concept that proves it. Whichever version you're accustomed to hearing (usually the one you heard first) you are more prone to enjoy.
@C13los How can you listen to this and say "WOW THIS IS HORRIBLE". Jesus man, this is undeniably good music. I get the debate between which is better, but to think this is horrible is pretty idiotic.
No, this is a Postal Service song that the Shins covered. I think Ben Gibbard's voice is an acquired taste. As for the comment about too much synthesizers, that's kind of Postal Service's modus operandi. They were going for an electronic sound, and I think it works out pretty well for them.
