  • I heard this in "The Art of Getting By".

  • TPS does it better I think. But this one is a nice listen as well.

  • this unofficial video is even better than the postal service's video

  • nice and easy listening song i like it.

  • The rarest of the covers: actually better than the original. Excellent!

  • I hear this on the radio like at 5 am, and i woke up and wrote "the shins" in my wall. I live in chile, really far away from you, so i think is quite great

  • hey man good job on the video. just noticed that it was unofficial today. lolz.

  • I say bravo to the shins for making a cover that sounds completely different than the original. How many covers do you hear that are merely covers...it's a refreshing look at the business of covers. Take a song that's good and change it drastically and make it your own.

  • Hey! They´re very very good! I love this version

  • the postal service or the shins?

  • Dark Helmet must've stolen this planets oxygen...

  • Outstanding work! Teach others now!

  • Who thinks the Shins used to listen to Pavement?

  • @Krtecek89 Yeah, totally get what you mean. The catchier beat is kind of off with the mellow lyrics.

  • the music is okay...i find that it doesnt really go with the lyrics though

  • @krtecek89 Sounds like you haven't heard the original version. ;D

  • This song played at the beginning of The Art of Getting By. I had only heard the Postal Service Version. A friend had told me a while back to listen to this rendition so when it started playing I was thinking...holy crap what is this song? I know it!

  • that guy is so sexy. cant believe no one else thought that!

  • @OGmigiP No, I am not on drugs, and I don't plan to be. I have synesthesia. Look it up.

  • 47 persons don't Become in silhouettes

  • wtf are you even saying?lol pink/green lyrics?

    are you on crack?

  • uhhh, don't kill me but I like the Postal Service version much better. I'm definitely an electronic fan though. I don't like the combination of orange/yellow guitar, and pink/dark green lyrics.....

  • @katnissblue99 Wait... do you happen to have synesthesia?

  • @peaceloveandtofu5 yep!

It gets kind of annoying though because no one knows what I'm talking about.

  • @katnissblue99 Ahh. :) I only have the boring kind (colors for letters and numbers). xP

  • @peaceloveandtofu5 That's not boring! it's how I remember everything (and why I'm so bad at history; dates don't have color). I only had that kind for a while, then I reallized that some sounds have color. Electric guitar is burgundy, higher pitched sounds are lemonade (yellow and pink) and lower pitched sounds are more like green and brown. Piano is blue and guitar is orange. It doesn't just come off the top of my head, but if I think about it a little I get the same color every time...

  • I don't get it, you died out of lack of oxygen when you opened up a window? lol. cool video btw.

  • @shewolf418 Well according to the lyrics he died because his cells replicated so fast that he exploded, though it doesn't show the exploding bit in the video. I guess there something wrong with the air. . 0_o

  • thats not james mercer... right?

  • Did anyone else think he was extremely attractive??

  • loses the meaning of the lyrics a tad, but amazing cover.

  • @ttreiop lol I thought that this was the original.

  • to be quite honest like like this version better than the postal service version

  • @killerxbeastx love this cover, but i like the original over it

  • @killerxbeastx To be honest i fucking hate. Well not really but i'm definitely going to have to disagree with you.

  • @killerxbeastx Just because you haven't seen Ben Gibbard driving a bicycle in hippie-clothes.

  • i feel like the one who really enjoys this cover

  • @GOrockiesbaby You keep on feeling that.

Truth is, you're not the only one for anything.

  • I heard The Shins' version of this song first, but I also love the Postal Service's version as well. I adore both The Shins and The Postal Service, there is no choosing between them. They are both brilliant and gorgeous in their own way. :D

  • Good video!

  • GOD. this says the postal service on my ipod! i was so confused why i couldnt find the other version

  • Great cover, but it can't touch the original.

  • I know I'm gonna get a lot of hate for this comment, but I just hate it when people think they're so artistic when they have a good camera, and film their every day lives in black and white. Seriously? This song has nothing to do with anything he did in this video.

  • Hmm. (said in my best mr horse voice) No Sir, I don't like it.

  • i honestly dont like this version. at all. even if it was an original it would suck and its kinda pissing me off. no wonder ive never heard of this band

  • @waitandbleed18 It's okay although I like the original version better!!!

  • @waitandbleed18 The Shins are considered one of the best live shows to see before you die.

  • @Dakotaisunavailable too bad they aren't together anymore.and considered by who? shins fans? Im a huge fan of the Shins, James Mercer and Broken Bells, but your statement made me laugh.

  • @magua4 ha yeah the day i heard that was a sad one. And sorry i wasn't specific, i didn't mean "mankind considers the shins...."; it was an article on Pitchfork a while back listing great live shows that were touring at the time. Of course, the guy could have been a raving Shins fan himself, so we're back where we started.

  • @Dakotaisunavailable dont like em

  • @waitandbleed18 The Shins have more albums sold, more views, more albums sold, more fans than The Postal Service. Two great groups, but to support The Postal Service by saying you haven't heard of The Shins is simply remarkable. The Shins are and will always be the more famous indie group out of the two.

  • @brachsfacebookemail Repeated myself on the albums sold thing...

  • @brachsfacebookemail they suck

  • well done :)

  • well done :)

  • great harmonies!! the original should have em too!

  • Good song!

  • i like both versions, but i think the original has a more fitting tone to it. i love the shins, love the postal service. i JUST found this cover. heard the original over 3 years ago

  • @gutentaug39 Even though it's The Postal Service. You're slightly disgraceful.

  • you know this song comes with the Postal Service Album if you buy it vinyl... I feel like they aren't competing so much as they're working together to make AMAZING music

  • This dudes lame. Postal owns Shins!

  • Wow a cover that doesn't sound like it's trying to be a replica. Thank you, James.

  • I'm in love.

  • much better than the original

  • @alecmccormack1234 I disagree. The original makes the lyrics much more vivid, IMHO. This is a good cover and all, but The Postal Service really makes me believe that the character in the song has boarded himself up in the closet and refuses to come out.

  • The Lyrics work with Mercer's voice better than Ben's.

  • Am I the only one that noticed the guitar didn't have strings?

  • @TheJakeasaurr yeah, because it does have strings.

  • @JayLaneLane didn't look like it did.

  • Well this one has a more happy upbeat tune while the other was like idk how to describe it but they are both amazing versions of amazing lyrics.

  • I first heard the Postal Service do the original but I REALLY LIKE this version. Shins rock at it

  • shins kick fucking ass

  • I don't consider this quite a remake or cover since they really took it and did something completely different. Aside from the lyrics, it sounds like a different song.

  • I prefer the Postal Service version but this one is nice too!

  • Plenty is never enough is a great cover too. The shins dominate covers like no other.

  • I really don't think you can compare this to the Postal Service...They're two totally different sounds even though it's the same song and they're both great for that sound! So, I think it'd be best just to call it a great song and say that the Postal Service did it first=]

  • i love the shins cover. and hate this video.

  • @smellydeli888 heres a thumbs up for you

  • heard this song at a bar last night. i recognized the lyrics and i liked the new sound. great cover.

  • i think that you are very creative. nice job

  • This version is so much better

  • <3<3<3

  • Wow very good cover

  • ehh, that was good, but how can I betray the postal service? so, my vote goes to the postal service for a better song. :)

  • I definitely like this more than the postal service version.

  • Oops, forgot to comment on the video itself: It fits the song perfectly.

  • One of the best covers around. The introduction of natural instruments is, pardon the joke, a breath of fresh air.

  • @Somestupidloser

I don't think you know what a joke is.

  • @ImFromTheSky

Chill, dude. Someone kick your dog or something?

  • @Somestupidloser

    See, that's a joke.

  • @Somestupidloser im afraid i didnt get the joke either : /

  • uhhhh noo.

leave it to the postal service.

  • love love love video and song so much!

    really good!

  • Nice death, though (:

  • nah the postal service is much better

  • Awesome. I liked it.

  • LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • love the la la's at the end of the song :)

  • Wow, the person in this video looks JUST like Sufjan Stevens.

  • you guys should check out the video i made for this song :) thanks.

  • idk, i never thought i could like a version of a postal service song better but the shins did it for me

  • hmm... well its a well made cover but i just dont really like it myself :p

  • Great cover, much respect from coming up with an original version too and not just replaying the same song on the same instruments. Very Nice, I love when he finally breathes the air in the end and dies.... lol

  • the postal service remind me alot of angels & airwaves both amazing bands

  • @myspacecomrogiie That's pretty much an insult lol

  • who made this song first?

  • the postal service. though both takes on the song are amazing

  • @babigymnast13 the Postal Service did. Both versions are great, in my opinion. :)

  • this is the most upbeat song about fallout

  • only postal service cover i've ever really liked

  • i like both :D

but at the moment since this is my first time hearing this i like this cause i was kinda getting sick of the other one cause i over played it :3

    still like both though XD

  • nice vid

  • The Postal Service not Death Cab.. Ha sorry. I still love Ben Gibbard and James Mercer!

  • Death Cab does this song too :)

  • I love the end when he breathes in the air and the big mushroom cloud goes off. he gets to see the light and hear the birds and smell the air one last time.

  • Good job on the video :)

  • you missed the point of the entire video, it's actually about Hiroshima and Nagasaki, it has nothing to do with literal silhouettes, it's referring to when the bomb went off how everyone was turned to a silhouette of ash!

  • love et

  • clicked on this song thinking 'ey up aint this by postal service' and the 1st comment i saw was someone in major dispute about the very subject. then at that moment my brain melted pissed out my nose and i listened to the song and decided wiki would provide more coherent info than youtube commenters :)

  • why are you guys arguing? shins made this for postal service's ep. no ones competing

  • great song

  • Good video. Good acting. Cute boy :) Amazing song.

  • Of course I like the Postal Service's original better. However, I love the vocals in this quite a bit. Ben's voice is rather calm, and it gives the song a very different, chilling feeling. The vocals in this aren't as calm, and there's a desperate feeling in this. I think this is how I'd be feeling if I were experiencing what was happening. A good example of this is at the "And I'm screaming at the top of my lungs, pretending that the echoes belong to someone, someone I used to know."

  • I like ur analysis man,

I agree, the vocals are not as calm.

The whole song has kind of an odd, quasi-upbeat feeling when done this way.

Still, The Shins are an amazing band. I don't quite see the "desperate feeling"; I think The Shins do the cover justice. Do urself a favour and check out some more of their songs... I recommend "Red Rabbits" to start off...

    Anyway, great video Mr. greene

  • my favorite by them is young pilgrims. its so fun, like anursery rhyme.

  • Comment removed

  • As good of a cover as you can get. The Shins did a great job. However, the Ben's voice and Dntel's beautiful sonic washes can't be beaten. It lacks synth accordion!

  • Which ever version you've heard first will almost always be your favorite.

  • Not true. I love The Postal Service and this is my favorite song of theirs, BUT I absolutely ADORE this cover. Could be the exception though.

  • Yeah, I said ALMOST always. Exceptions don't disprove trends. Familiarity breeds liking is a psychological concept that proves it. Whichever version you're accustomed to hearing (usually the one you heard first) you are more prone to enjoy.

  • @drumsfightingandstuf nope, i like this one better than the original and i heard the original first. i don't like trends.

  • i like this better too. :)

  • @drumsfightingandstuf Proves how good the lyrics are.

  • i adore the postal service.

    but i prefer this version.

maybe it's just because i heard it first.

  • WOW this is horrible Postal Serivce is so much better but nice try though

  • @C13los How can you listen to this and say "WOW THIS IS HORRIBLE". Jesus man, this is undeniably good music. I get the debate between which is better, but to think this is horrible is pretty idiotic.

  • this is an enjoyable cover, but i think it will always pale in comparison to the postal service's original.

  • I like both but the Postal Service sounds a bit better

    But I love the Shins.

  • The Postal Service kicks their ass.

  • Eh. The Postal Service version is a lot better.

  • yes

  • i like this much better than the postal service's version

  • I like this better than the postal service

  • I was looking for the Postal Service, but this song is awesome too.

  • worst music video ever.

  • give him a break, at least he tried

  • cute american boy :)

  • I like this one better, you hit the lower beats better.

  • OMG I <3 FALLOUT 3!!

  • aww you cutie little shins fan :)

  • a Dirty comment

  • This reminds of Fallout 3.

  • The Shins Verison - for Alchohol, hanging with friends The Postal Service Version - Marijuana, shrooms and those trippy nights in general

  • But some humans have evolved the astonishing ability to enjoy music sober!

  • So true.

  • i like this version better

  • this version sucks ass

  • Five stars - I like the overexposed, brightly lit shots at the window: gorgeous.

  • i like this version better.

geez damn postal service and the shins always confuse me with who songs are whos and such.

  • video's good, song is good, both versions that is, though this version definitely suits the video better.

  • I like this version better I think.

Probably because I just like the lead singer of the shins' voice better.

Nice video by the way. Ace. :]

  • nice job! :)

  • I'll say what I think when I hear any shins song. Ehh.

  • great song....awesome video. still think the postal service version is better though...

  • No, this is a Postal Service song that the Shins covered. I think Ben Gibbard's voice is an acquired taste. As for the comment about too much synthesizers, that's kind of Postal Service's modus operandi. They were going for an electronic sound, and I think it works out pretty well for them.

  • its a postal service song dumbass

  • No, this is a cover of their song...
