@Jackbskelly, I fought with this when my ex-fiance left me for the third time (granted, after the second time, I should have seen the issue with she and I) and rather than drink then go to AA, I went there first. I'd never had a "problem" before that, but went to cut it off before it became one. I don't think I've got either the chemical or psychological addiction, but I know that when I drink I think past pain. That said, I will keep you in my prayers, daily!
Still deal with my sobreity on a daily basis it's hard to get clean and stay clean and being in the military makes it even harder. I still haven't kicked the habit but when i'm down this song rings me through another day/night.
My dad always drank. He was never around to see my basketball or baseball games, always at the bar or even the local applebees drunk. I told myself at the age of 9 that I would never get to that point of neglecting my children. Now I'm 28 and I have 2 kids and haven't touched a beer or shot EVER. Alcohol destroys lives and this song hits home and has since I was 14.
My addiction is not with drinking, it's a drug. When he says " it's the simple things in life, like the kids at home and a loving wife; that you miss the most; when you lose control, everything you love starts to dissapear, the devile takes your hand and says no fear". I lost my house and family. both my parents died and my brother is serving a 25 yr sentance. I tried to go to the meetings, but i feel like the only one thats a total screw up.
@TheDallas84 find a meeting near you i used to feel ,the same way but guess what we all fall down and screw up ,my addiction cost me one marriage and almost cost me the one i m in now ,the meetings really help noone will judge you because we've all been there and theres alot of good folks who've been where youre at now,and once you go and here others share their story ,you ll see youre not alone .recovery doesnt happen overnight you have to work at it ,but trust me its so worth it.
@TheDallas84 Feelings aren't facts, keep going to the meetings and listening to the similaritities and soon you'll hear your own story being told by a complete stranger. Don't give up to soon, I promise it will get better..
song reminds me of my dad. He never won his battle with the bottle, But i know every day of sobriety was a war for him and he tried. My fingers are crossed for anyone fighting the demons. Good luck.
I'll admit I've been drinking since I was 15 and one too many times I've come home drunk, I lost a lot of people in my life that I cared about and I think the bottle was the only escape that I knew of at the time, when your drinking to avoid the pain of everyday life that's when it gets out of hand and eventually you'll turn to the bottle for everything. Two nights ago while drinking, I got through one beer and then I put it down and I hope that's the end of it. Good luck to everyone else!
i tried AA but the people there treated me like an outcast cause i was homeless at the time when i asked for a sponcer they said my plate is full so when i got my 90 day chip i was asked how did you do it i responded alone and walked out. as i sit with beer in hand today i think most of those retards only stay sober to show up the other ones in that meetings.
@skullwolf3000 Sorry to hear that buddy. I don't believe the thing about a sponsor. I got sober at 16 and noone looks down on anyone. Give it another try, they wont come to you. You go to them. It is truly awesome so many more singers are creating songs reaching out to drug addiction and alcoholism. I started drinking when I was 14 and did not find AA(wasn't at bottom) until I was 36. I am finally living my life sober and it has brought me much more happiness now. My oldest daughter is not 15 and never saw me sober up until these past 10 mos. It's not easy, it never it.. But it is worth every single minute of it.. :)
this song really means alot to me in my sobriety as well, the first time i heard this song i bawled!! this song truely touched my heart and really made me glad i found the program i did! it changed my life!
This is so true my Dad was an alcoholic I lost hime when my baby girl was 5 months old, hen I lost my older brother, becvause he always wanted to be like our Dad who was the the smartest man I've ever met!!! It's amazing how much a chemical lie ethanol can do to a person, first it takes your time and attention and makes you think it's fun, then you wake up and everyone is mad at you and you;re alone. Kenny is just amazing...this is a great song.
My son was sober for seven years...then he fell...eventually, the Lord took him away from us. We buried him this year, he was killed in a head on collision...the driver was drunk. I miss my son, somehow I think he'd still be here today, if he'd held on to his sobriety. I miss my Som - I Love you Jess, Love Ina (Mom)
I love this song ,It reminds me of my dad who finally overcome alcoholism when i was very small. and he drank for a long time before. i cry thinking but i am also thankful for what my mom dealt with. and am happy that my dad was able to be honest with me about it. he ended up being the best dad ever
When I first started going to A.A. I had an EPIPHANY when I heard this song and so EXCITED to hear a famous person sing about A.A. Knowing he was sober (at this time) made sobriety all seem so real and worth it! This song played a big part in my sobriety!!!
I've been clean for 5 months now. It has been a really hard, long road but I wouldn't change it for anything in the world. Good luck to all those that suffer with alcoholism and addiction.
sadly, drinking (along with other things) ruined my marriage. i just couldn't handle the mental & verbal abuse any more. i stayed in it for 20 yrs. & walked out. he wasn't the man i loved & married when he was drinking. it was a hard decision. people, please wake up to drinking before you lose everything. its not worth it! i would have gave anything for him to stop. he realizes now what he lost.
My husband got sober after 20 years of hard drinking. We went through the whole gamut of his DTs, seizures, fights, loss of work, driving while drinking, etc... you name it, we painfully went through it all. He's sober for many years now. Who I thought was a weak man proved to be an extremely strong man. It's a lot for both of us to fix what still needs fixing, but changing that "learned behavior" on both of our parts, forgiveness, patience, trust...he's worth it.
Nine years clean and sober. This song makes me sad because it's the truth but it also gives me hope that I'll be here chilling for the rest of my life. I listened to this song when i was rehabbing and it was a life saver.
tha worst thing is, is when everything starts falling apart and nobody knows what your going through, its to the point where my wife hate me me for it and the presure from being laid off after years of work for then... what the hell am i pose to do???
This song hits a sore spot w/ me. My real father has a serious problem with alcohol and bc of that, I refuse to have a relationship w/ him. What I wouldn't give for him to have some kind of revelation & realize that he could have his daughter in his life if he would step away from the bottle. I have explained that to him more than once but the bottle is just more important. Thankfully I have a wonderful Dad (my stepdad) and know that any boy can make a baby but it takes a MAN to raise a child!
i may be only 16 but i know the pain drinking can cause, my brother, my dad, my uncle, everyone around me drinks but i have seen what it has done to them and what it has done to my mom (dose not drink) and i am sick of it and i hate the way they act. being a Jr. in high school and it gets harder and harder to say no, to drinking. but every time i think of taking a sip, i see my mom crying. and that is how i do it, but it is never easy to say no, never.
@dtothedog1 Thats same with my family, except my mom is 1 year sober and gettng her 18month chip soon and my dads been sober for 5months, Its ahrd to go thru your family drinking but songs like these can get you thru these things, even if they last forever<3
@Marylost12 so true and here is a new part to the story my bro is sitting in jail right now because he lied to the cops about something that happened while he was drinking hes is down there with a $350 bail
@dtothedog1 Wow, Im sorry. I hope hes sobers up and asks god for some help. Atleats I hope he takes Step 1, Realize hes an alcoholic, because hes the only one that can. Hope all is well soon(altho theres always something new in alcoholic families) God Bless<3
@dtothedog1 dude theres nuthing wrong with a grown man haveing a few drinks, the drinking isnt the problem. The problem is WHY do your folks use drinking as a crutch? Hang in there,i can tell by your comment that your a cautious and bright kid. Dont stress it,youll be alright.later dude.
@dtothedog1 keep saying no...it's a lot easier to say no than to figure out how to apologize for the stupd stuff you do and say when you're hammered....alcohol is sneaky, it's never a problem,,,till it's a problem. My youngest is a junior in high school too, she knows her uncle and grandoa died of alcoholic excess...she refuses to go down that road and I am proud of her and every young plerson who says no. Stick to your conviction, you'll never be sorry for that.
I drink a glass or two (a SMALL glass) of wine once in a while. Sometimes, when I go out to a nice restaurant, I'll have a mixed drink or two.
I agree you should not drink. Some think the predisposition to alcoholism is genetic. You do NOT want to end up like the rest of the men in your family.
Drinking in moderation does not cause harm to a lot of people, but some let it get out of hand. Then, it ruins their lives and the lives of those around them.
I'm not what you would call a big Kenny Chesney fan, but he does this song justice. The Songwriters: Shaye Smith & Mark Alan Springer did an amazing job writing this song. I have played it for anyone who would listen over the years. Nov 9th I make 9 years clean, I still go to NA meetings. This song is a great reminder of things you can loose. Recovery is there for anyone who wants it. It's never too late. I'm 40 yrs old, i sure wish ida quit sooner. But I thank God 4 givin me another chance.
@wolf70737 I'm clean 16 years October 7th! I wish too I had quit sooner, but so grateful for the life I have now. Thank you for sharing! This song really nails it!

My mom was touched by this song because of its menaing<3 I loved it to, My Moms been sober a year-and-a-half and my dad just got him 4 month chip. May they be sober for as long as they live and for them not to pick up one more drink. God Bless<3
I lost many things over alcohol. Since I was 17 i drank very heavy. Ive been sober 6 years now. I attend AA meetings. The one thing i learned is that you have to change your life for you.. You have to really want it and willing to give it up. You cant quit for your wife or any person cause when that person makes you mad you start thinking why do i need to quit for. Life is so much better sober and never thought i could do it. I made the best choice i ever made...

I had this song for years because I thought it was pretty and had a good message. Then I became a drug addict and alcoholic and forgot all those good messages. I found this song again after NA found me and I got my butt into treatment. I'm 4 days from a year sober now, and a day at a time is the way I do it. 25 years old and I'm a newborn again... This song is always on my playlist for those days I think I'm doin fine and I don't need that meeting. Just for today, I never have to use again.

I have never had an alcohol problem but I'm just in the last week struggling with coming off an addiction to pain pills and songs like this is what is keeping me going and giving me the strength to not give into temptation and stay clean for my wonderful wife and my 2 year old little girl. Thanks Kenny and all the other singers who write and sing songs that can help all of us through what we are dealing with.

I love my husband even after he has lost control over alcohol. He humilates me more and more each day. When he left our home he said he was leaving because he was not willing to stop drinking. That hurt. I love this song listening to it gives me strenght and the surety that one day he will come home and be sober I just hope it wont be too late. Jessica, Jayden, & Jonathan we love you Efrain Barrera!!
cjrsgal, you just said everything i had to say!!! i feel guilty sometimes for wanting to give up and get on with my life! everytime i open the door it gets shut in my face. still i want to believe it's the addiction not me, and i become the 5 year old kid that needs my dad. angry, hurt, done crying. that's why i'm here!

I have to say that after being sober a little over nine months my life has truly changed. I have graduated high school, and am now in collage at 30 years old. I am present in my life and my sons. I have a sponsor and am working the steps. A.A has saved my and God has given me the grace to walk though this life with purpose. The only meeting your ever late for is your first. Get to a meeting and the rest will follow. Keep coming back!

I'm amazed that people could dislike a song like this, the lyrics are so powerful. The devil must have taken their hand and pushed the dislike button.
need help dont belive in aa really dont belive in god iam 46 lost jobs because of drinking been in jail almost lost my kids but still drinking whats its gonns take
@84lukeduke Hey luke as a recovering alcoholic I can tell you it takes what it takes some less and some more. When you've had enough and are willing to go to any length to get and stay sober your then ready to take the 1st step thats admitting you have a drinking problem and your life has become un manageable. You can do it Look up local aa meetings in your area or they offer some meetings online.... You are the only one who can do this for yourself God Bless you and hope you succeed...Linda
@megammie12 thank you for the advise been trying i get to steps forward and two steps back iam a cook and everwere i work thers a bar inside i just need to wake up be4 its to late thanks hun and thanks for caring god bless you

This comment is to the person who had the dad that was an alcoholic dad for the first 27 years of their life and this person had been let down over and over by their father to the point that its "Depressing" WOW!!!! Its an illness, look it up i do believe its classified as a disease. Trust me YOU think you are depressed and saddened by his behavior, he is more than likely harder on himself than anyone could ever be!!!! Wont dont you try some classes and get on board??
my dad and uncle are alcholics. dad is to compicated to type here and uncle hes just a basturd when shes drunk but the most awseome guy sober. i miss the old days. now my best friend all he does is drink and it concerns me he says he just drinking for fun but i think hes hidding something i dont wanna see him go down the path as my family

My dad used to be a drunk, it eventually cost him my mom. They got divorced in August, he got sober the following February. I'm glad I have very little recollection of how he was back then, but I sure love the man I know now. He hasn't had a drink in 22.5 years. He still goes to meetings every week.
"This osng fits how I feel watching my rm mate drink mon- sun and esp when he is up all night sun knowing he has to go into work and i end up driving him in while hes out in the passengers seat of his truck or sitting htere w/ a beer in hand. It brekas my heart knowing he's so depressed and theres not a dman thing I can do about it but be there for him when he wnats tlk."
This song captures how truly heartbreaking it is to watch an alcoholic parent. My dad was not a part of my life for the first 13 years, he constantly chose alcohol over. me, my mother, and brother. There are no words to describe the pain you feel watching people you care for destroy their lives.Lucky enough, and thanks to the lord my father is now in his 5 year of being sober!
i may only be 25 but evverytime i drink me and my girl argue, and tempers fly. i drank lastnight and lost her for good, this song says it all. all i can do is cry and like most wish that i neveer wouldve drank, but like she told me that we have to live with our concicounses. i now i spelled that wrong, just really wish that i could have her back, even though i am young , shes all i want and the women that i want to spend the rest of my life with.
My dad quit drinking around April 2006. Around August 2009 he started seeing a chick who wanted him to drink when they went out, so he did and of course it escalated back to pre 2006 levels. As of June 2011 they no longer see each other. She was a whore who would sneak out and saw many different guys while they were dating. Unfortunately, dad's drinking stayed around after she left. Thanks Katie Callahan. You sure ruined a lot of lives.
I've been sober now for 56 days. I am a recovering addict and it's the hardest thing I have ever had to do. Thank God that I have a great support system. This song has gotten me through some really hard days and nights.
@rengroce Congrats on your 56 days of being sober and keep it up, it is truly amazing how alcohol can take control of your life and make a person be a completely different individual glad to hear you have a great support system because that is definately something that is needed to fight this addiction. Have a great weekend!!
This song makes me think of my dad he had said that my younger brother and I should listen to it and I remember the first time i listened to it and it did and still does remind me of him it was so hard to try and have a conversation with my dad while he was drunk since he just liked to argue it hurt me because he was an alcoholic and I know that we all tried everything to get him help but he didn't want it and now he is gone. :( I Miss Him R.I.P. Dad (9-30-10)
I have been sober for a year. I love Kenny Chesney. The man is an entertainer. Here's my only issue though...he seems to have become the heir apparent to the Jimmy Buffet throne. Does anyone see the moral conflict between early Kenny and who he is now? All his songs nowadays are about enjoying yourself in the sun, on a beach...and drinking. Must be the money...
This song sure was my life, as a recovering alcholic who's father was an alchoholic, I can say those meetings were my life line and my return from hell. I sure wish my father could have gotten sober, he unfortunately drank himself to death. I lost it all, but came back and have been sober now for 28 years. ODAAT. Thanks Kenny giving the world your music and piece of so many peoples lives in this song.
my family got torn apart from drinking when i was a child. i had no one else in my family who did not drink that i could go stay with so i moved in with my boyfriend and i found out they drank to and i thought they would split like my family but what i found out from them is that they had no problems with there family. i ended up with them for 8 years i loved every minute of it. seeing my boyfriend every day was awesome but now i have 3 kids and a loving husband i love him. this song is good!!!
This song means so much to me, i was an addict to opiates for 7 years i almost lost my wife and tried to take my own life three times. with her love and support i made it through to the other side and have been sober for almost 8 years now. thank you baby, you dont even realize what you did for me and i will love you for the rest of my life you are the most impportant thing to me and i dont ever want to go back to that place and i know with you next to me i wont ever slide again
this song help me alote when i want to say fuk it i am goin back get that drink but now i am clean and live back at home with my wife and kids so now when i want it i get the cd out and set down and list to it and think about i want to go back to it and i know if i did my wife will say no more to me all i had was my wife and kids it is hard but it is good that i am not doin it nomore i love wake up next to my wife and see my kids ever day and the 1 thing is to say I AM A ALCHOLOLIC
Hang in there and keep the faith. I thought the same thing 3 years ago. On June 7, I hit my 3 year "Birthday Day" I took the 12 steps and literally applied them to everything in my life. This past year my Dad's cancer came back, I have one son that is a Soldier and the other is leaving for MCRD in 2 weeks with the Marines. All in the same year. Never once did the thought cross my mind to take a drink. You hang in there and before you know it you will be getting that one year coin
@sooner1028 it will its nice to see someone steppin up to the plate it will b hard and frustrating but keep the ones ur doing this for close to ur heart and it will work out for u just keep ur head up........when life brings the rain make sure u take the chance to dance in it.....smile always smile!!!
@CeruleanBlue1967 I agree whole heartedly with GrizySwag. Not too many stories end up like that. Im not sure if your a spiritual person but that touched my heart in that way. What a story, i cried when i read that he died. I know that we all die sooner or later but your story is one of those that you just wish could live on forever. God Bless you and your family

I miss my Som - I Love you Jess, Love Ina (Mom)

sadly, drinking (along with other things) ruined my marriage. i just couldn't handle the mental & verbal abuse any more. i stayed in it for 20 yrs.

I found this song again after NA found me and I got my butt into treatment. I'm 4 days from a year sober now, and a day at a time is the way I do it. 25 years old and I'm a newborn again... This song captures how truly heartbreaking it is to watch an alcoholic parent. My dad was not a part of my life for the first 13 years, he constantly chose alcohol over. me, my mother, and brother.

Does anyone see the moral conflict between early Kenny and who he is now? All his songs nowadays are about enjoying yourself in the sun, on a beach...and drinking. Must be the money...

@sooner1028 I will keep you in my prayers and stay strong brother. I know it sounds cliche but it really is day by day.

@sooner1028 The A.A. "classes" are actually a way of life. Once you realize that, they DO pay off! =)
